Sigma Nu: A Short Story

Walking into college, I always wanted to join a brotherhood. But, it was hard to find the one for me at first. After striking out on a few other fraternities at SEMO, I didn’t know if Greek Life was for me. But after talking one night with Brian Smith, I would give my one last shot to Sigma Nu. Looking back, I couldn’t have been happier with my decision. Over the past few months I have grown into a better person and have achieved goals I wouldn’t have even thought about being able to achieve. Looking back throughout my candidate process I can say I have strived for Love, Truth, and Honor.
With Love, as I started college looking for a brotherhood that would accept me for who I was and not try to mold me into a new person. I wanted a fraternity that would push me as well as well help me throughout my years at college. With Sigma Nu, I believe I have found that. With Sigma Nu, I felt accepted as I came out as gay to the people around me. No one had cruel words or hate towards me, with the actives at Sigma Nu, they actually took me under their wing and had told me that they would stand up for me when need be.

But, Love didn’t shine to me as much as it did the night of the candidate retreat. That night was a special night due to the stories, the hardships, and the support we had for each other. No matter what the background or the meaning of the story, everyone was there and grabbed a shoulder if you needed it. I will always remember when we took a break Wesley Cox, had taken me away from the group and set me aside and said, “If anyone would hate me for my sexuality that I should go and talk to him about it because he would take care of it.” To have people there for me when some of my own family is hesitant is what I needed at that time.
Throughout the time of me being a candidate, I have learned that within the chapter truth means a lot. Not just in a bad way nor a good way. From times of people making the wrong decision within their period as a candidate to times of growing together as a class. Truth always sticks to the candidate session with Matt Floyd and the ‘Cross the Line if’ exercise To me this was something you had to be truthful about or you created a wall between you and your candidate brothers. But, I don’t believe anyone did that. I was learning a lot and created a bond between my candidate brothers and I.
From the day I had received my bid from Sigma Nu, I had realized that my candidate process wasn’t going to be easy, it would come with challenges and it would come with hardships.

But, with those hardships and challenges, I have created memorable memories, as well as created a better understanding of the chapter and what I would want to see out of myself. Being in Sigma Nu, is an honor and I have learned that throughout my process as a candidate. I have learned that you need to take everything to heart and cherish the things. Listening to many alumni it is a golden time to be in Sigma Nu and you should not take advantage of it. Also another thing about being a nationally renowned chapter, you have high standards to hold. But with the Mu Kappa Chapter, we don’t just hold them, we exceed them daily, by pressing ourselves to the next level and achieving

greatness.
I admire the work and effort that the Mu Kappa Chapter puts in and would I would hold such honor to be apart of the chapter. But at the end of the day, it comes down to hard work. With hard work comes things that motivate you, and for me Love, Truth, and Honor has motivated me and the men of the Mu Kappa Chapter of Sigma Nu, which one day I hope that I am apart of.
