Important Decision An important decision needs to be considered thoroughly before making a choice. In life, everyone will face many decisions to make. Some decision will affect your entire life. Some for better but others for the worst. I will never forget the decision I made to go through sorority recruitment. Sorority recruitment has changed my life bringing me new opportunities and friendships that changed me into the person I am today. Graduating from high school and attending a college where I knew no one was a fearful thought. I was the only one from my close-knit group of friends to attend Missouri Western State University. Only a few days into the college experience and felt lonely. I had no one to do my homework with or eat with in the cafeteria with me. I came to college with a negative look on sororities. All my knowledge of greek life came from the media. Sororities are portrayed in a dismissive …show more content…
light stereotyping all of them to be about partying. But the media lacks to mention all the truth about the real meaning and bond of sisterhood that brings all the sorority women together. Becoming a member of a sorority has shaped me into a better person. Though my time in my sorority has been short I have already grown a significant amount as a person. I have learned new ideas and values that I apply to my life everyday. Being surrounded with a diverse group of girls that all come from different backgrounds opened my eyes to cultures I knew nothing about before. I have gained sixty new lifetime friends that i never would have had if i was not for going through sorority recruitment. As soon as i was accepted I felt the embrace of their love and sisterhood. Every month we do a sisterhood event to bring us together and to get to know each other more on a personal level. I also received my Big Sorority sister. Having a big gives you someone to help guide you through your college experience. She is always there for you when you need someone to talk to or someone to help you out. An important part of being in a sorority is our philanthropies.
Every sorority proudly represents an organization, for which their goal is to raise money for. My sorority’s national philanthropy is “Sigma Serves Children” which is carried out through the Robbie Page Memorial for the research of Polio. My sorority chapter sold root beer floats and we made seven hundred dollars for our organization. Every monday or to any greek life event we wear our letters. I wear my sorority letters with pride because they mean so much more to me than just Sigma Sigma Sigma. It represents everyone one in your sorority when your in your letters. When people see you out in public wearing your letters you want to be setting a good example so you represent your sorority in a positive manner. Being in a sorority changed my entire college experience. I now have a group of great lifetime friends continue with through college. I have grown in learned more about myself through the whole process. Being in a sorority has shaped me into the person I am
today.
While reading Pledged: The Secret Life of Sororities, I learned more about the inner workings of Greek Life. I learned that the odds of me finding a sorority are so slim due to my independent and different personality. While I am not good at sticking up for myself, something this book has made me feel is crucial to blend in and conform to an ideal to fit into a sorority, I am too opinionated. There are not many sororities (at least shown in Pledged) that welcome girls who are different, preferring to stay similar. For example, each pledge class would soon like identical within a few months of pledging. Another thing I learned about is the careful planning and manipulation that occurs throughout sororities,
At a young age I knew as an African American woman through activism, educational autonomy, and community service, I can thrive through the wake of extreme poverty and turmoil faced by the people of my neighborhood of East New York. My interest in Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc., would be based solely on their ethical standards, history, and values they are founded upon. The ladies of this organization exude exemplary character who excel in sisterhood, respect, honesty, accountability, and integrity. Throughout my life I always encouraged myself to have these ideal characteristics without knowing that one day I would be pursuing membership in a prestigious organization, whom upheld the key principles “greater service, greater progress. The first
I am seeking membership in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated to be a part of a sisterhood that leads and serves. I would love to join a sisterhood that serves the community, promotes academic achievement and builds self-esteem in students of all walks of life from primary to adulthood. In addition, I wish to expand my public service through educational development. As an educator, serving children and families through toy drives and youth mentorships would afford me countless opportunities to give back beyond the walls of my classroom, dance stage, and church. With my dedication, compassion, and creativity, I know I will work diligently to produce a strong impact on the sorority’s current programs and aid to create new
had was the National Library Project. This program was a program created to give resources to those who are limited in literacy. The Suffrage March was an important movement that the members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. was interested in participating because they believed the right to vote would decrease the inequality with women. The Suffrage March occurred in 1913 in order to give women the right to vote and have the opportunity to stand for office. Before the walk occurred they encountered a few issues because African Americans were not given the opportunity to walk in the front of the line with the whites, they had to march in the back. Members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. had also faced an issue on whether or not administration would allow them to go off campus. Eventually, administration was able to work on an agreement where they were allowed to leave the campus only if a chaperon was present. The march was a success for the founders in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. although there were police, and those marching had to be careful with stepping on the side walk. In the more recent years, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. has done many community service such as Habitat for Humanities which is assisting with tearing down buildings in order to build shelters and homes for those who are less fortunate. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. have also had a program in which a member collaborates with different organizations in order to help African Americans who are at risk of failing. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. is known for their many selfless acts, with giving a helping hand to the community and those in
Once I am a fully initiated member of the Fraternity I will attend chapter weekly. The entire pledge class bonds and learns about the Fraternity, ideals, and history together. Chi Omega also plans activities that helps us bond together as sisters, such a flag football against the other sororities, or even something as simple as ice cream out together. These activities bring us together as a discourse community very frequently. This year we had the largest pledge class in the history of the Sigma Zeta chapter at 24 girls. Every year there are two recruitment periods, one in the fall and the other in the spring. It is during these periods that the fraternity replenishes the members that went alumna with new
Do people really understand the secrets behind the Greek community? There are many pressures girls face that the public is not familiar with that are specifically evident in sororities. Alexandra Robbins, the author of the book Pledged: The Secret Lives of Sororities, went undercover and followed four different girls during their experiences within the Greek system. Although there are many struggles girls can face in sororities, the five most prevalent type of pressures include: having a perfect body image, substance abuse, stress, silence, and hazing.
So what allows a campus fraternity to fall under the category of a social institution? Social institutions are commonly conceived as the necessary focuses of a social organization, which is common to most of society and usually deals with the problems and procedures of structured social life. General characteristics of a social institution involve regulated patterns of behavior that are specific, continuous, and organized. The patterns become the regulated norm, and are carried on from generation to generation, allowing the social institution to continue on through the years. Fraternities were first developed back in the late seventeen hundreds and continued to expand over the past couple of hundred years. Today there are about sixty different fraternities all over the United States, represented by different letters of the Greek Alphabet, with several chapters and various schools. Fraternities is a ‘member only’ social institution that is just for guys, (women have similar institution called sororities). Every fraternity has a board of members that they personally e...
Day in and day out we hear about high school and college students wanting to pursue a sorority and/or a fraternity based on the stereotypes these organizations uphold, well I chose to differ. I told myself if I ever decided to become a member of a sorority it would be based solely on their ethical standards, history, and values they are founded upon. Alpha Kappa Alpha, Incorporated consists of ladies of distinction and exemplary character who excel in scholarship, leadership, and service, which are qualities I have chosen to uphold. From my perspective, I encourage myself to maintain a respectable appearance and reputation which doing so inspires me to embrace my self-concept; which helps me confidently excel academically and professionally as a “lady of distinction” and “exemplary character.” Most importantly, I continuously remain involved in community service, being involved allows me the opportunity to learn and understand the lives and circumstances of others by opening my mind, heart, and soul. Overall these qualities strengthen my passion to be a member of the prestigious Alp...
The purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha is to promote sisterhood in colleges to assure a bond between college women, and the sorority leads by being an example for other college women to follow. Alpha Kappa Alpha also promotes higher education and positive self-esteem to younger women. Alpha Kappa Alpha also gives back to the community in community service that could range from educating our women on relevant topics to just lending a hand in the community. I want to contribute to this purpose at Mississippi State University and back in my hometown.
To me the purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is to promote sisterhood and unity, serve the community, and build lifelong bonds. Therefore, I am seeking membership in order to be a part of a sisterhood that
I think the media poorly represents the social life in college. I have an extremely fun, packed-full social life and I do not hang out with Greek members or attend events put on by the Greek system. The media often illustrates the Greek system as the only means of having a social life which is completely false.
The mission of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, promote unity and genuine friendships among college women, aid in issues concerning girls and women in order to come up with solutions to eliminate or ease the circumstances they may face, maintain an ongoing interest in college life, while also being of service to all mankind. This sorority has not only empowered women to help others, but it
As the end of spring semester of my freshman year approached, I was overcome with both joy and relief knowing that soon I would be done with finals and, more importantly, I would soon be completing my slightly long and extremely dry initiation process and finally be allowed to called myself a sister of Sigma Delta Tau. Even though I was beyond excited to become a sister, I couldn’t help but feel weird about the entire situation. Up until the day I decided to rush, I never in a million years would’ve thought that I, of all people, would join a sorority. Even though I had come to terms with the fact that I was in fact meant to be a sorority girl, I was still unsure of how to tell my friends and family back home that I was a sister. In high school, I’d always
If I am chosen as a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. I will work hard to uphold the reputation and exceed the standards that those before me have set. I believe becoming a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. means joining a group of highly educated women that together I believe are capable of facilitating the type of change that is imperative in today’s society. It is my hope that I will be accepted as a member and be afforded the opportunity to take part in that change. I look forward to hearing from you regarding my request to join your
...t the top, but to raise the bar higher for those who are reaching for the top. The men of this fraternity set an example of achievement; they show that being the best isn’t enough. That is why I want to be a part of this fraternity, because I want to be set the example, I want to show that being okay isn’t good enough, and I want to show that being an African-American male, I will not be hindered by stereotypes or any other preconceptions. Being able to be a part of this organization that will push me to be the man I can be, rather than pull me down to a lower level; will grant me the opportunity to be able to show that others can make it, just like I did. Kappa Alpha Psi Inc. is the organization I wish to represent, progress, and be a member of because their objectives and goals, represent what I stand for, and I couldn’t see myself joining any other fraternity.
