1. What were your organization’s purpose and goals for the past year? How did you fulfill them?
Phi Sigma Pi is an Honor Fraternity for students in four-year collegiate institutions and Phi Sigma Pi Alumni, founded upon a basis of superior scholarship with the avowed purpose of advancing academic, professional and social ideals. Phi Sigma Pi exist to meet the needs of close fellowship among students of like ideals who are interested in the same end.
In carrying out the purpose of Phi Sigma Pi, the organization strives to personify and encourage three ideals:
A. the acquisition and dissemination of information and knowledge through scholarship,
B. the application of professional skills and the fostering of leadership qualities by promoting

and advancing the welfare of humanity, and C. the fostering of non-discriminatory, fraternal fellowship within Phi Sigma Pi's ranks. Phi Sigma Pi is built on a Tripod of three ideals mentioned above which are: Scholarship, Leadership and Fellowship. This Tripod provides direction in our organization, our programming and in our actions as members. Combined, the Tripod guides our members to be successful contributing citizens while at campus and into their professional careers. Scholarship: As an honor organization, we expect our Members to maintain good academic standing. Academic standing, however, is just a small part of the scholarship ideal. Scholarship in our organization expands outside the classroom and is a part of a larger “always learning” philosophy. Leadership: Phi Sigma Pi provides the opportunity for students to gain core leadership skills to strengthen oneself; but then, just as importantly, how they apply that skill to pay it forward. Fellowship: Phi Sigma Pi develops a culture of fellowship within the organization. In addition to a fraternal culture that develops friendships, it also fosters a sense of teamwork and camaraderie that allows us to plan successful events and activities. In Phi Sigma Pi, you’re a Member for life. Fellowship provides the passion and stability to fully remain involved with Phi Sigma Pi through Alumni Picnics and inter-collegiate events such as Family Reunion. The year was the first year we set goals for ourselves and as Chapter President, I have made it my duty to encourage us to work towards those goals and to keep our members updated with how far we are from reaching them. We as a chapter, agreed on the following goals for the year. Attendance Fundraising Goal $2000 Morale (Cohesiveness) 20 New Brothers Overall Presences on Campus All Schools attend Regional Conference Diversity within the Brotherhood Advisor Involvement Successful Regional Conference As far as where we are in terms of our goals, we have definitely incorporated more diversity within the fraternity this semester and not just with race. We have many members with different backgrounds, religious beliefs, and sexual orientation. This is something that is good for everyone because it allows us to work with others that we normally wouldn’t choose to work with. Attendance has improved as well as our presences on campus. On February 14, 2016 we turned 100 years old and celebrated in a major way. We had a week-long of events that was later published in the school newspaper. At the conclusion of our week long events we had a Centennial Celebration to honor the 3 founders that paved the way for our success. On February 19-21st we hosted our annual Regional Conference for the first time here on Sam Houston’s campus and it was very successful. We had about 100 members attend in all and delegates from every school in our region attended. Even though there are many goals that we have already reached, we still have many to go and we believe we will be able to reach each and every one of them. 2. How has your organization improved during the past academic year? Phi Sigma Pi has definitely improved this year in terms of morale. For the past few years there has been some separation between our members and a goal we set this year was to increase the morale and overall participation of our members. We try to plan more appealing programs that encourage teamwork and learning. We have also implemented a 15 minute bonding activity at the beginning of every regular body meeting. We have found this to be very beneficial for our members. We have also started to establish a name on campus. Some ways that we found this to be effective was through opening up our social programs to the entire student body. We believe this is constructive because we as leaders are viewed as role models. When people begin to see who we are and what we do, we hope that they are motivated to focus on their grades so that they can eventually join us. Another way we have improved is by supporting school wide activities. For example, we participated and won first place in Scour Bowers last Fall. We also participated in Financial Literacy Week, Diversity Council Conference, Tailgating and a number of Organizational Fairs. Overall, our organization is slowly improving to better meet the needs of our members and to uphold our tripod. 3. Please list how your organization exemplifies the University’s motto: “The Measure of a Life is its Service.” Phi Sigma Pi exemplifies the motto in more ways than one when it comes to our tripod characteristics.
In Scholarship, we serve others when we link together and assist one another in tutoring. We also provide services to non-members when we host scholarship programs that teach students something that classrooms can’t. For example we had an event, where we hiked through the National Forest and learned survival tips. This was also a risk management program where we were taught the proper way to pitch a tent and how to identify areas to set up a camp site. Leadership extends through service in our communities. Not only does Phi Sigma Pi support HOBY (Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership) our National Philanthropy but we are actively involved in the Huntsville community. We have participated in a number of community service opportunities including: Bearkat All Paws In, Carriage In Nursing Home, Highway Clean-Up, Build a House with Dan Phillips, Relay for Life, and The Good Shepard Mission, to name a few. As a brotherhood we have completed over 750 hours of community service per year. Service isn’t just something that we do, but it is a part of who we …show more content…
are. 4. What was your organization’s most outstanding program this year and why? The most outstanding program that we have had this year was “Regional Conference” because it was a turning point for our organization. We were the only school in our region that had not yet hosted Regional Conference before. This was also the first time that majority of our members could actually attend a regional conference. This was due to a number of reasons including travel and expenses. It was truly an honor to host this year’s conference and we believe it was the best one yet. We had many different aspect that were presented at the conference including the Leadership in Action Facilitator Training where members could get certified to teach Leadership Modules, Roundtable Discussions where members exchanged ideas, and an Instagram Scavenger Hunt. The conference also included a HOBY presentation which was a presentation on our new National Philanthropy, and Dan Phillips as the keynote speaker. At the conclusion of the conference we had a sporting event and a Banquet. Overall, it was a very successful program and beneficial for our members, because we had so many approach the executive board about new ideas that they would like to implement. This program really allowed our members to reevaluate their dedication to the organization and we believe we are moving forward in a positive way. This not only helped us reaffirm our dedication, but it also encouraged us to work together to get the job done. 5. If your organization is selected as the winner, write the bio as you would like it to be read at the 22nd Annual Sammys. The Information included should be based on the accomplishments and credentials you have provided in the previous questions. Please Keep your bio between 150 and 250 words and write in third person format. Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity is an Outstanding Academic Honorary Organization that strives to develop its members into distinctive leaders.
Phi Sigma Pi is built on a Tripod of three ideals: Scholarship, Leadership and Fellowship. They teach professional skills and foster leadership qualities by promoting and advancing the welfare of humanity through service. Phi Sigma Pi offers strong academic students the chance to experience the benefits of three types of organizations all consolidated into one premier fraternity: the personal rewards of an honor society, the internal satisfaction of serving others through service, and memories and friendships that will last long after the college years are over. Phi Sigma Pi’s members are committed to academic and personal success, being role models in our communities, and creating meaningful connections with members. Their members have over 750 community service hours combined. This year Phi Sigma Pi Celebrated 100 years of scholarship, leadership and giving back to the community. In the years to come Phi Sigma Pi hopes to grow and inspire more than just its members to be great, but the entire student

At a young age I knew as an African American woman through activism, educational autonomy, and community service, I can thrive through the wake of extreme poverty and turmoil faced by the people of my neighborhood of East New York. My interest in Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc., would be based solely on their ethical standards, history, and values they are founded upon. The ladies of this organization exude exemplary character who excel in sisterhood, respect, honesty, accountability, and integrity. Throughout my life I always encouraged myself to have these ideal characteristics without knowing that one day I would be pursuing membership in a prestigious organization, whom upheld the key principles “greater service, greater progress. The first
I am seeking membership in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated to be a part of a sisterhood that leads and serves. I would love to join a sisterhood that serves the community, promotes academic achievement and builds self-esteem in students of all walks of life from primary to adulthood. In addition, I wish to expand my public service through educational development. As an educator, serving children and families through toy drives and youth mentorships would afford me countless opportunities to give back beyond the walls of my classroom, dance stage, and church. With my dedication, compassion, and creativity, I know I will work diligently to produce a strong impact on the sorority’s current programs and aid to create new
... the fraternity chapter than ourselves. Machiavelli states, “it is far safer to be feared than loved if you cannot be both.”(chap 17). Machiavelli would believe that the pledge process within the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity is being run with a type of government that is cohesive for the greater good of not only the fraternity but the entire community that is surrounding the fraternity. Machiavelli would understand that the end justifies the means of the pledging. Our pledge trainers do not fear being feared more than loved and according to Machiavelli this is one of the characteristics of a good leader.
Once I am a fully initiated member of the Fraternity I will attend chapter weekly. The entire pledge class bonds and learns about the Fraternity, ideals, and history together. Chi Omega also plans activities that helps us bond together as sisters, such a flag football against the other sororities, or even something as simple as ice cream out together. These activities bring us together as a discourse community very frequently. This year we had the largest pledge class in the history of the Sigma Zeta chapter at 24 girls. Every year there are two recruitment periods, one in the fall and the other in the spring. It is during these periods that the fraternity replenishes the members that went alumna with new
Women of Delta, especially the ladies of the Alpha Tau Chapter, excel excessively in everything they accomplish and partake in from what I have seen on Southern Universities campus and in the community. Their outstanding work ethics, academics success, social friendliness, dominating attitudes, and constant need to help others is just a few explanations why I would be honored to be a lovely member of ...
Day in and day out we hear about high school and college students wanting to pursue a sorority and/or a fraternity based on the stereotypes these organizations uphold, well I chose to differ. I told myself if I ever decided to become a member of a sorority it would be based solely on their ethical standards, history, and values they are founded upon. Alpha Kappa Alpha, Incorporated consists of ladies of distinction and exemplary character who excel in scholarship, leadership, and service, which are qualities I have chosen to uphold. From my perspective, I encourage myself to maintain a respectable appearance and reputation which doing so inspires me to embrace my self-concept; which helps me confidently excel academically and professionally as a “lady of distinction” and “exemplary character.” Most importantly, I continuously remain involved in community service, being involved allows me the opportunity to learn and understand the lives and circumstances of others by opening my mind, heart, and soul. Overall these qualities strengthen my passion to be a member of the prestigious Alp...
The purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha is to promote sisterhood in colleges to assure a bond between college women, and the sorority leads by being an example for other college women to follow. Alpha Kappa Alpha also promotes higher education and positive self-esteem to younger women. Alpha Kappa Alpha also gives back to the community in community service that could range from educating our women on relevant topics to just lending a hand in the community. I want to contribute to this purpose at Mississippi State University and back in my hometown.
Additionally, analyzing the overall structure of the Greek System will allow me to understand why students feel inclined to become a member of these organizations, while others don’t. In order to comprehend this student subculture, however, it is imperative to define what the Greek System really is and what core values they are based on. The Greek System, composed of different fraternity and sorority communities, are organizations that focus on academic, social, and professional support.... ... middle of paper ... ...
The mission of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, promote unity and genuine friendships among college women, aid in issues concerning girls and women in order to come up with solutions to eliminate or ease the circumstances they may face, maintain an ongoing interest in college life, while also being of service to all mankind. This sorority has not only empowered women to help others, but it
I have gained access to this community through pledgeship in Sigma Chi, one the most prestigious fraternities in the nation, with the hopes of becoming a brother. Even though I have access to this community I know very little because I am so new. Through my research, I have learned and discovered the intricacies and deeper understandings of not just Sigma
Greek organizations are debatably the most undervalued and misconceived aspect of college campuses. Most people don’t see the benefits that fraternities and sororities bring to college campuses and their communities. Some see these organizations as large beneficial clubs and others see them as potential problems. Many of the allegations put forth by individuals that discredit the benefits and good deeds done by Greek organizations are weak justifications for their removal from college campuses. Greek organizations provide campus communities with academically responsible students, philanthropic activities and increase community involvement.
In this effort, I serve the community by making an effort to keep the people in it healthier. Lastly, I show service to my school through the help I provided while in the National Junior Honor Society. As a member of NJHS I helped our middle school begin a recycling program; I helped get the recycling boxes and bins ready, gather paper from around the school, and sort the paper after school. Through this I show a dedication to my school and community, because not only does recycling help the school reduce waste but it also allows the environment resources to last longer. For these reasons, I am an excellent, determined, helpful member, who is more than willing to provide service to my school and community.
Upon arriving to college, many students face the challenge of finding a community to belong to. I believe the student affairs professionals on campus are the resource to building communities within the student body. Reflecting back on my first semester of college, I found my community within two organizations; Dance Marathon and UI Alumni Association Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow (S.T.A.T.). Within the organizations I met two advisers who opened my eyes to the world of student affairs.
If I am chosen as a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. I will work hard to uphold the reputation and exceed the standards that those before me have set. I believe becoming a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. means joining a group of highly educated women that together I believe are capable of facilitating the type of change that is imperative in today’s society. It is my hope that I will be accepted as a member and be afforded the opportunity to take part in that change. I look forward to hearing from you regarding my request to join your
...t the top, but to raise the bar higher for those who are reaching for the top. The men of this fraternity set an example of achievement; they show that being the best isn’t enough. That is why I want to be a part of this fraternity, because I want to be set the example, I want to show that being okay isn’t good enough, and I want to show that being an African-American male, I will not be hindered by stereotypes or any other preconceptions. Being able to be a part of this organization that will push me to be the man I can be, rather than pull me down to a lower level; will grant me the opportunity to be able to show that others can make it, just like I did. Kappa Alpha Psi Inc. is the organization I wish to represent, progress, and be a member of because their objectives and goals, represent what I stand for, and I couldn’t see myself joining any other fraternity.
