My discussion of high school students taking a fitness test is, in fact, addressing the larger matter such as an increase in obesity. Some people believe that high school students shouldn’t be required to take a fitness test. Many high schools recommend that high school students take a fitness test yearly. Why wouldn’t schools want to help students stay healthy rather than increase the risks of heart diseases, obesity, or other heart problems? Schools should use the fitness test to help the motivate the students to stay healthy, so it doesn’t interfere with the student’s future expectations. High school students should take a fitness test per semester because it can help improve the physical health, improve emotional health and it’s the school responsibility for the student’s health. Although, all students are not required to take the fitness test in their P.E. class. The school believes that students have the option to take it the fitness test, making it not a requirement. Students do have a right to not take the test or it can be the parent’s option for the student to not take the test. School administrators are not aware of the negative effects of the student’s health. According to Connecticut’s Physical Fitness Assessment Program, the purpose of the program is to continue individual fitness assessment, identify strengths and weaknesses, inform the students about their status and inform program improvement (Greenwich Public Schools 2006). In other words, the students taking a fitness test will help improve for more positive effects. The fitness test will help find the strengths and weaknesses of each student to help maintain a good physical health. Who doesn’t want to have to do exercise? Everybody needs exercise to be in good health, but some people don’t like to exercise. They just want to stay inside and do nothing in life. Even though people don’t want to exercise all the time they could have a treadmill or a bike to exercise on instead of going outside and running or play basketball with friends just to lose weight. When completing an exercise a person is expecting results that day, during or post workout. Training is a long-term process that creates noticeable and physical results over a span of weeks, even months and years. Training involves planning with preparation for the training duration and progress towards a goal. The desire to win and be better than the competition is essentially important for professional and collegiate athletes. These athletes take training and preparation for a competition to a new level of determination and commitment. For the last two years, I have been working with the University of Oklahoma’s softball team as their student athletic trainer. I attend every practice, workout, and all of their games. As the student athletic trainer, I help with assessing their injuries, with treatment and rehabilitation of their injuries as well as injury prevention. I have watched these women go through some strenuous workouts and have seen their improvements. Some of the girls have asked about taking CrossFit classes or other workout programs during winter and summer breaks. This paper examines the issues associated to the disengagement of students in the health and physical education domain. Typically traditional curriculums have shown to foster anxiety and create undesirable competition amongst students through fitness testing. It is critical to understand the reasons behind the issues of why students are disengaging in the participation of physical education, as the sedentary behavior is becoming a major factor in the obesity epidemic.
For the first time in years, schools are considering imposing an extra mandatory class on students with the hopes of solving a deadly problem; however, it could be causing more problems rather than diminishing it. A statistic recently released by the Kaiser Family Foundation, has stated that in America, 31.3% of 10-17 year olds are either obese or overweight. To combat this issue, The President’s Council on Physical Fitness has introduced a proposal that would require every high school in the United States to have a daily and mandatory physical education class in order to promote healthy lifestyle choices. Very few states require P.E. daily for high school students; however, many states are considering adopting the proposal. Doing so seemed like a great way to combat the growing problem until I thoroughly researched the topic and found that the negatives outweighed the possible positives. Calvin Christian adopting the proposal created by the President’s Council on Physical Fitness regarding mandatory daily P.E. classes would be a huge mistake due to the negative effect on student’s physical and emotional health, the likelihood of an increased budget, and the possible cut of valued classes.

By educating the youth about diet and fitness, they can put an end to the rising statistics about obesity.

I believe that fitness has a greater impact on you mentally than it does physically. Fitness releases chemicals that cause you to feel better instantaneously, improving mood for 24 hours. Fitness makes you more confident and improves your self-esteem, key for ridding anxiety and depression. Fitness makes you set goals for yourself, motivating you to improve yourself everyday. It gives you a boost of energy after, making you feel like you can conquer the world, or to just do your homework.

Exercising is too over rated. It’s not as healthy as it’s cracked up to be. All it does is make you tired as you go through and finish what you have done. You waste all your time going to the gym or watching what you eat, while you could very much be enjoying a movie on the old television while chewing on a delicious piece of pizza. Why eat all that junk that is “healthy”, what’s really bad about “junk food”? Is there anything wrong with enjoying yourself? No, there is nothing wrong at all. I believe you should have the chance to make all of your own decisions and to do whatever it is that you want. Why eat a small bowl of cereal, when you really want a second helping? Why run for a half hour to lose what you just ate, only to gain it back to do the same thing. If you just eat whatever your body is telling you that you want, you’ll be fine. That’s why our body has what we call metabolism. This helps to maintain weight and to keep you in shape, right? Damn straight! So for all those who are out there right now, reading this and thinking that it’s ok to be fat, sure it is. Although, I must say that, being too fat is no good. You are the people who probably should waste your time and money on something so stupid that you don’t even gain anything over the whole time you do it. Hell, you could be on a program for about two years, lose twenty pounds and feel great. I’d love to do that, but you know what that does later in life? That weight you lost then comes right back, it didn’t do you any good losing that weight in the long run. All that is going to happen is that you are going to turn out to be one of those really fat people we see on the news that is crying about not being able to take care of themselves and not being in good care. Screw them, why be like them, be your own person, the only healthy eating is eating at a fulfilling rate. So, next time you go to watch a show and a commercial comes on about some stupid, super duper, weight lose programs...I want you to call it.
Since I am a Physical Education Paraprofessional, I am required to assess students and their physical abilities based on the “Virginia Wellness-Related Fitness Testing Program” yearly (“Physical Education,” 2012). In order for the students to do their best on these assessments, I must make sure that I prepare them accordingly. Obesity rates in North America are appallingly high; all states in the USA report over a fifth of the adult population being obese and over a third in some Southern states (Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama) (The State of Obesity, 2016). Eighty percent of adults from the USA do not meet the government’s minimum recommendations for physical activity. The government health guidelines state that adults should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise weekly (health.gov, 2008). Obesity can lead to diabetes, cardiovascular problems, low self-esteem, and other health issues. Physical activity has physiological health benefits (muscle growth, cardiovascular health, and more), and psychological benefits (escalated energy, reduced stress, and higher self-confidence) (Association for Applied Sports Psychology, 2016). Unfortunately, over a quarter of American high school students are overweight or obese (The State of Obesity, 2016), and this will set a standard for them for the rest of their life.
