Assessments are according to Edglossary.org (2014), “the wide variety of methods that educators use to evaluate, measure, and document the academic readiness, learning process, and skill acquisition of students”. Assessments can be used to identify several important aspects of learning and development. First, they can be used to distinguish a child’s strengths and weaknesses as well as measure specific knowledge and skills. Assessments can also be used to demonstrate what a child has learned and what they understand (“Assessment,” 2014). My opinion of assessment has not changed; however, now I understand how to use assessments that will help ensure that I am providing the most benefits for my students. I always knew that assessments were valuable to teaching, but I never understood their true value. Now, I have a better understanding on how to use assessments in my classroom to provide students with developmentally appropriate practices that are geared more towards the specific student and their needs. For instance, if I assessed a student using a task performance checklist and noticed that he had already accomplished a task, it would not be beneficial to have him keep doing the same thing that he already knows over and over. Since I am a Physical Education Paraprofessional, I am required to assess students and their physical abilities based on the “Virginia Wellness-Related Fitness Testing Program” yearly (“Physical Education,” 2012). In order for the students to do their best on these assessments, I must make sure that I prepare them accordingly. In order for me to do this, I provide practice on each portion of the test during warm-ups every time the students come to my class. After taking the Personal Assessment Literacy Survey, I learned a lot about myself and what I do know about assessments, and what I don’t. This survey allowed me to reflect on the process that I take to plan, develop, and administer tests in my class and what I need to do with the results. When I went through the criteria of all of the topics in the survey, I honestly did not know what the survey was talking about or what it meant. This was really concerning to me because I like to think that I do a pretty good job when it comes to instruction of my class and how I assess their knowledge of the material. I learned from this survey that there are a lot of things I do well during assessments and that there is still a lot that I need to learn to be an effective classroom leader.

Many people have different opinions on the use of fitness testing, some being stronger than others, but there’s still some research out there to back up most opinions. While there is plenty of good and bad connected with fitness testing, I’m going to dig into ways I should use it in the classroom when I become a teacher. Knowing the negatives of fitness testing can help me create ideas to eliminate the negatives and keep testing as fun and relaxed as possible. By doing so, I’ll make sure everyone testing feels comfortable testing and ensure that results are accurate.

Assessment is the process of observing, recording and documenting a child’s actions and behavior to measure a child’s development. Assessment is an essential part of teaching and educating, because it can provide a record of cognitive, physical/motor, and language development. Assessments have always been a tool for teachers to assess mastery and for a long time it was just to provide a grade and enter it into the grade book or report card. Through resources in and out of the course, there has been a breath of new life into the research on how to use assessments. They take many forms and fall within the summative or formative assessment category. Sloan (2016) addresses how formative assessments has traditionally been used by teachers to modify instruction, but when we focus on a classroom that is learner-centered “it becomes assessment for learning as opposed to assessment of learning” (slide 4). Technology is a big part of the fitness testing that occurs in most school systems in the country. There are three different types of tests, the pacer, pushup, and sit up test. For the pacer test the voice will tell you when to begin, and then you must run from one sideline of the court to the other before the beep. You must do this continuously back and forth until you reach a passing score. For the pushup and sit up test you must go up and down as the voice commands until you either pass or fail. For example, where I went to high school we used all of these forms of technology for our state fitness testing. Even some of our athletic coaches will use the pacer test as a way to get our sports team in better condition. Also, some PE classes use music for warm ups in order to get the students focused or excited about the class. By using the music the kids will want to start moving instead of no music which may make the beginning of class seem boring and bland. Another way technology is used is through virtual games and other activities. Some examples of virtual games could be Dance Dance Revolution, or other games for the Wii, Playstation, and other video game consoles where you are constantly moving even while standing in front of a television or

It is important that teachers give children a fair chance to show their knowledge when assessing. “The purpose of assessment is to provide feedback that can be used to improve student performance” (Orange 2000). Teachers assess children to ensure that they are understanding the material, and to make sure they are learning. For young children, tests should never be the only criteria for assessment. Instructors should always make sure that their assessment is fair.
Through assessment students and teachers are able to determine the level of mastery a student has achieved with standards taught. Both formative and summative assessment should be purposeful and targeted to gain the most accurate data to drive further instruction (Ainsworth, 2010). While this syllabus does a good job of identifying the need for both formal and informal assessments, the way in which this is communicated does not provide enough detail for understanding. Simply listing assessment types does not give any insight into how these assessments fit in the learning process of this course. While some of the assessments mentioned could be common assessments chosen by the school or district to gain insight into the effectiveness of instruction, the inclusion of authentic assessments is most beneficial to students and demonstrates learning in a context closer to that of a work environment (Rovai, 2004). Unfortunately, this particular course, according to this syllabus, relies heavily on quizzes and traditional tests and essays to form the bulk of assessment opportunities. While other activities, such as formative assessments, journaling and discussions are mentioned as possible avenues for scoring, they are given a very low percentage of the overall grade. The athletic programs in schools solely provide children with different ways to learn motor skills, develop fitness skills, and gain knowledge about physical activity. I would rather have my students know how to look up information and apply knowledge than to memorize it and forget it ten minutes after the test. Learning is a life-long adventure and I want my students to know how to adjust and cope during their adventure. I want my students to have the skills for researching and finding the answer.
