Explain the importance and benefits of assessment for learning.
Assessment and its associated feedback are essential to student learning. Well-designed assessment has numerous benefits and it provides a measure of students' progress as it can be a means to engage students with their learning.
The children have a sense of responsibility of their learning. They take ownership of their work and become more confident and committed to achieving as they can see for themselves where they are in terms of their learning. The children will be able to recall previous knowledge (pre-assessment) which will help to make the lesson or activity more understandable. It helps students gain confidence and social skills and share the roles of assessing and being assessed equally. One suggested peer assessment activity is to have students work in groups, discussing each other’s’ in-class assignments and ways to improve or change them.
Self-assessment gives students the ability to identify their own strengths and weaknesses. It enables them to know what aspects of their learning they need to put more effort into.
Feedback ensures that adults are supporting all children to enable them achieve to the best of their potential .The teacher knows whether learning is effective and finds new ways of improving.
Research has shown that there is a clear relationship between being part of the process of assessment and pupil motivation. Children who are actively engaged with their progress will feel empowered to improve their performance and will feel more ownership of their learning.
