Assessment and its associated feedback are essential to student learning. Well-designed assessment has numerous benefits and it provides a measure of students' progress as it can be a means to engage students with their learning.
The children have a sense of responsibility of their learning. They take ownership of their work and become more confident and committed to achieving as they can see for themselves where they are in terms of their learning. The children will be able to recall previous knowledge (pre-assessment) which will help to make the lesson or activity more understandable. It helps students gain confidence and social skills and share the roles of assessing and being assessed equally. One suggested peer assessment activity is to have students work in groups, discussing each other’s’ in-class assignments and ways to improve or change them.
Self-assessment gives students the ability to identify their own strengths and weaknesses. It enables them to know what aspects of their learning they need to put more effort into.
Feedback ensures that adults are supporting all children to enable them achieve to the best of their potential .The teacher knows whether learning is effective and finds new ways of improving.
Research has shown that there is a clear relationship between being part of the process of assessment and pupil motivation. Children who are actively engaged with their progress will feel empowered to improve their performance and will feel more ownership of their learning.

The
Formative assessment to inform instruction and guide student learning is being underutilized. Many students are not given feedback that is effective in helping them see where they are in regard to reaching the learning goals or that provides plan for moving them forward to achieve that goal. Students are not always given the opportunity to take an active role in the learning process by regularly assessing themselves and their peers as they work to achieve their learning goals. The purpose of this study is to determine how the use of formative assessment with immediate feedback using student response systems will impact student learning. This study will also investigate the effect that student involvement in self-evaluation has on learning.
In conclusion I feel that using effective assessment methods throughout any course allows tutors to give feedback at the right time to allow the correct progress for the learners to achieve. I have experienced feedback many times as coach and more recently as a teacher and feel it has only helped me to improve and to keep wanting to improve so I can inspire others to achieve.
Research carried out by Ofsted (2011) shows that, assessment improved a practitioner’s awareness of a child’s strengths and weaknesses. Subsequently, this had a positive influence on their planning, as they were able to differentiate and offer adequate support for children. Ofsted believes it to be the best way to improve pupil’s attainment (Ofsted, 2011).
Students learn if they can work in large groups or if they work better individually. They also learn what kind of learner they are when it comes to taking in information given to them by the teacher. Not every student is the same, and they learn that is it okay to be different and to be proud of the person they are. Students learn how to deal with conflicts and resolve the matter in a calm fashion.
Assessment has been the greatest challenge in my development as a professional. My coursework as supported my growth in this area, especially in understanding the broad range of assessments used to support students’ growth and development. My courses have also supported my understanding of how ongoing observational assessment and standards-based measures can be used to inform instruction and support the cycle of observation, reflection and planning. Assessment is a process carried out to ensure that learning has taken place. It measures the learner’s knowledge and skills in their learning area, for me this area is Beauty Therapy. Assessment should encourage the learners to ask questions on anything they have not fully understood, as learners know that they will have to prove their knowledge and understanding to the standards of the awarding organisation. These standards and expectations vary depending on the chosen awarding organisation, some have a very rigid structure, whereas others take a more holistic approach to assessment and therefore look at the process as a whole. For beauty therapy my students are under VTCT, they use a holistic approach to learning and assessment and learners are given set outcomes and ranges they must complete in a timely manner.
Assessment is an essential part in the classroom that focuses not only in a grade for a certain task or a final result. Through peer assessment, students individually assess each other's contribution using a list of criteria. Due to the agreed marking criteria, there is no confusion about the outcome of the assessments. There are many advantages to using peer assessment. Peer assessment encourages student involvement and responsibility.
By providing kids with a positive classroom environment they will be able to share their curiosity without being judged. Whether the assessment is formal or informal it is good for so many things. As part of the tasks of teaching, assessment helps us as teachers determine how we should structure our lessons and what ways the students could best learn a certain topic. By providing a formative assessment, a teacher can determine which student are advance in the material and which students need to be re-taught.
Also teachers can check whether students are doing good or bad. Students can show the ability and understanding of the section that they were learning.
It is important that teachers give children a fair chance to show their knowledge when assessing. “The purpose of assessment is to provide feedback that can be used to improve student performance” (Orange 2000). Teachers assess children to ensure that they are understanding the material, and to make sure they are learning. For young children, tests should never be the only criteria for assessment. Instructors should always make sure that their assessment is fair.
INTRODUCTION 1.1 .Background of the Problem Assessment in Education is an important element as it provide information about possession of knowledge and skills gained over a learning period (Cowie and Bell,2010).This is because it focuses to tell the evidence that student master the content also focuses to identify the deficiency on the technique used for teaching and learning (Schuwirth,2013).If student perform well in the activities they given in task such as individual work, presentation work, group work and test, inference are made that student master the content tested and therefore he or she acquired the intended learning. Through assessment students and teachers are able to determine the level of mastery a student has achieved with standards taught. Both formative and summative assessment should be purposeful and targeted to gain the most accurate data to drive further instruction (Ainsworth, 2010). While this syllabus does a good job of identifying the need for both formal and informal assessments, the way in which this is communicated does not provide enough detail for understanding. Simply listing assessment types does not give any insight into how these assessments fit in the learning process of this course. While some of the assessments mentioned could be common assessments chosen by the school or district to gain insight into the effectiveness of instruction, the inclusion of authentic assessments is most beneficial to students and demonstrates learning in a context closer to that of a work environment (Rovai, 2004). Unfortunately, this particular course, according to this syllabus, relies heavily on quizzes and traditional tests and essays to form the bulk of assessment opportunities. While other activities, such as formative assessments, journaling and discussions are mentioned as possible avenues for scoring, they are given a very low percentage of the overall grade. As teachers, we have to monitor the progress our students make each day, week, quarter and year. Classroom assessments are one of the most crucial educational tools for teachers. When assessments are properly developed and interpreted, they can help teachers better understand their students learning progress and needs, by providing the resources to collect evidence that indicates what information their students know and what skills they can perform. Assessments help teachers to not only identify and monitor learners’ strengths, weaknesses, learning and progress but also help them to better plan and conduct instruction. For these reasons, ongoing classroom assessment is the glue that binds teaching and learning together and allows educators to monitor their efficacy and student learning.
Peer assessment is where students assess other students through assignments. This innovative teaching empowers learners to be both tutor and tutee. While assessing your peers, you are also conducting self-assessment into your own performance and developing sound judgements while assessing others and providing professional opinions in helping your peers to improve. As a result, sound ideas and proper English grammar are both equally important.
