In early September the students of Sherwood Middle School and parents were shocked. When it was announced by the the district that Sherwood Middle School would be getting a new vice principal. The school board announced that Sherwood Middle School’s vice principal for the last two years, Mr. Kevin McIntosh. Would be leaving and would be replaced by a young man named Marc Jolley.
This new change affected both parents and students. Both students and parents were very perturbed. Since Mr.McIntosh had been the vice principal for so long. This new and very sudden change was unexpected and flabbergasting. One mom, Carolyn Thomson, says, “I was surprised by the news. Mr. McIntosh seemed really nice and happy. He did not seem he was not settling in.” And most parents seemed to have the same reaction. It seems like parents and students are demanding an explanation. For why Mr.McIntosh left in the first place? And who is Mr. Jolley anyways?

Jolley exactly?’ Well Mr. Marc Jolley began teaching in the year 2000. At Tigard-Tualatin High School and spent the next 11 years serving as a language arts teacher. Marc Jolley soon switched over to Sherwood Middle School District after being hired to be their new Vice Principal. Since their former Vice Principal, Kevin McIntosh resigned in June. “I am excited to be a part of the incredible staff and community of the Sherwood School District” states Jolley. Who is now a proud member of the Sherwood School District.
And now for the bigger question that has been boggling parents minds. Why in the world did Mr. McIntosh leave? Kevin McIntosh resigned in June. Because, he got a job offer outside of Oregon. I had the pleasure of being able to shadow Superintendent Shirley Hall of the Maplewood School District. Ms. Hall took the reins of the district over in 2012 from a very popular superintendent who was credited with making great strides within the district. Although Ms. Hall had very large shoes to fill, she seems to be doing it with grace and enthusiasm. She credits the previous superintendent with making systemic changes and establishing the overall forward momentum of the district, but recognizes that she cannot rest on past success. Her goal is to take the district to the next level of educational excellence by focusing her and her administrative team's efforts on the P.E.L.P. coherence model from Harvard University.
This school has had 5 principals in 4 years. I spoke earlier about this school being a part of the I-zone. The I-zone is a special subset of schools within Shelby County that are given the task of leading a school from the bottom 5% to the top 25%. In that there is a high turnover rate with administrators and teachers. I was selected to be a turnaround principal given a certain amount of time with the authority to make necessary changes. The community asked for a principal they could relate to. They wanted to be involved with the school and wanted resources given back to them so they could help their children. I listen to community concerns and established a parent power committee so they could be partners in education with us. We reached out into the community to garner some wrap around services to help and support our students. We gained seven (7) new Adopters who have formally taken the charge to provide resources that all students will need to achieve academically. Life Church gives us food. Bellview Baptist Church comes in and tutors all our 2nd grade students. Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity has volunteered to come in and work with our students on STEM projects. We have Omega Psi Phi who comes in an exposes our kids to social and character development. And the list goes on. There just so many programs and organizations ready to work with us because they know
In 2010, Beachwood High School hired Dirk Dagger as principal. The previous principal was beloved Phyllis Knowles who worked at Beachwood for two years. Prior to Phyllis was Joe Gates who left his first principalship after only two years. Preceding to Joe, Lonna Self led the high school for four years and was forced out by the board. All of the principals lived outside the local community and commuted long distances to work. Dirk's two assistant principals, or AP's, were Frank Fischer, a young, highly talented former business education teacher for six years, in his second year as AP. The second AP was Sara Shad, a 28 year veteran English teacher at the high school, in her fourth year as AP. The administration was aware that culture changes existed in the school with the continued influx of Arabic families into Dearborn Heights.

Henson, the assistant principal, lacks the communicator trait. Henson has not taken any opportunities to communicate with the parents, students, staff, or community this year. Due to his lack of communication skills he has not fostered any relationships with individuals who he will interact with next year as the head principal. Henson has been assigned the head principal job for the 2016-17 school; I believe his lack of communication skills will cause problems in his principalship. Parents want their children to attend schools where the teachers and administrators are relatable and can effectively communicate his expectations for them and their children.
The mentality of the school was to help the popular kids succeed. Joe had fallen through the cracks for 2 years and kept trying to reach out for help but was ignored. As I examine his circumstances I wonder how things could have been different. If he had stayed on the football team, would he had received the help he needed or would the teachers just of given his good grades to keep playing? I believe the former is more likely. The teacher-students relationships were inappropriate and negative for the students. The students were not measured on their learning merit but on their popularity. The sad reality is the failure of the education system that forced a child with a learning disability to repeat the same grade almost 3 times. The teachers have the responsibility to develop their students into success individuals even if the students are disabled.
The case study, The New Principal: Managing Human Resources by Jane A. MacDonald (2006) brings to light many issues a first-year principal could face. For this analysis, I am going to focus on three main ideas: school readiness for change, integrating technology, and human resource needs. All of concerns and tasks that Ms. Zola identified during her brief visit to Roma Elementary fall into one of those overarching ideas.
I do not think Amber’s perspective about her role as assistant principal was unrealistic. I do believe, just as she did, that setting high expectations for the students and staff members can have a positive outcome on their performance. She was also committed to fostering an environment of teamwork and collaboration within the school and she was perceptive about the pervasive conflict that existed between the faculty and the administrators. I think that staying with the school and challenging herself would be the best option in trying to resolve the worries and conflict she was faced with.
Our principal, Dr. Cendan has served Millennium Middle since its inception in 2002. As principal, one of her greatest challenges is balancing all of the daily demands of students, teachers and community. Despite her busy schedule, Dr. Cendan finds time to inspire, coach, and mentor students and faculty members along her path. Under her leadership Millennium has consistently exceeded expectations. For the spring term, the faculty made changes and Philip got assigned to Miss Narwin’s homeroom class. Things got worse when Philip was assigned to her homeroom as if being in her English class wasn’t bad enough. When Philip got back to school he found out he was assigned to counseling. Philip was furious and still wanted to get out of Miss Narwin’s English class.
In the case study with Principal Miller, he had to make a decision to change the instruction program or to keep it. There was a group of parents that wanted students grouped by their ability. The other group of parents wanted the instruction to stay the same. Principal Miller was new to the school and had very little knowledge of the school. This leaves some critical issues that Principal Miller has to think about while he made his choice. He needed to make sure that the children were getting the best education that he can provide as the leader in the school. He also needs to think about the other educators in the building and how they would feel about the grouping. If Mr. Miller changes any instruction it needs to be understood by all of the teachers and staff in the building. Mr. Miller should consider all of the parents, keep an open dialogue with them, and report data for and against the change and finally make the decision.
The School Principal is recently hired in June 2013 and he is new to the district, but he is very well respected and liked by the staff as he earned their trust.
In order to be an effective school, all school personnel must work together in a friendly, caring, polite, and respectful manner. There are a number of positions and employees in a school. “A school is a complex social system, and all the people in it contribute to making it run smoothly” (Kauchak & Eggen, 2014, p. 182).
