Dress code enforces the modest dress of students, preventing bullying and distractions.Numerous people believe clothing is a distraction and when eliminated the school environment is more professional and gives a better education to a student. Authority figures consider the school apparel enforcements are constitutionally sound, not affecting the child’s right to freely express, and providing a professional and working setting causing a better learning environment and decreased amount of bullying due to clear differences in appearance. However, opposers disagree with the restrictive code because of its limitations on individuality
Multiple reports are taken from females who experience the shorter end of the stick due to increased fashion interests and sexist mindsets of their school staff. An individual’s choice of dress is a reflection of themselves, a form of identity. Officials conclude that clothing choices increase the risk of bullying. Punishment for those who violate the strictly enforced rules consist of in-school suspension until someone from home can bring replacment clothes, humiliating “shame suits” , or any other creative punishment the school decides such as detention, etc. Shame suits are humiliating outfits that those who broke the rules must wear as a form of punishment, most of the time these consist of extremely unflattering clothes that have written phrases on them indicating that their appearance is due to their violation of the school rules. In a bigger picture, students don’t come to school for a fashion show they come to school for an education. Somewhere along the line some students and parents have forgotten that simple fact. In some districts, like Wilson County Schools, the dress code violations got so out of hand that administration had to threaten suspensions, “During the first six days of the policy change 184 high school students were suspended.” (Creech, 1). The Lima Senior High School campus made the same decision as the Wilson County Schools. On Tuesday January 27, 2009, the Lima City Schools suspended about 164 students for dress code violations. They both knew that their students were having problems following the rules, and since the punishments that were set didn’t affect the students they did the one thing that got the students attention.

School dress codes have been a very controversial topic lately. With social media helping to spread the stories of students that feel like their schools have taken these rules too far people all around the country are outraged over public school dress codes and how they oversexualize pre-teen and teenage girls and limit the clothes students can wear. To help fully understand this hot button issue and establish a point of view I will speak of some of the history of dress codes, why I believe they are unnecessarily restrictive, inconsistent, and unfair, and some arguments that are promoting these codes.
Should dress code rules exist? If you would ask most of the students today if school dress codes should exist then they would say no because they would have to buy more clothes and spend more money just to fit the rules that the school has came up with. Some others would say that school dress codes should exist because of bullies making fun of other students because of what they are wearing. America’s school systems seem to have many issues concerning students receiving a quality education without distraction. A current debate argues weather a dress code policy is efficient or takes away from student’s expression. Administrators at schools should regulate a dress code policy because the system improves discipline and student’s attention, reduces social conflict and peer pressure related to appearance, and dress code provides a more serious learning environment.
The author does not make a very convincing case that school uniforms and dress codes violate students’ freedom of speech and undermine important values. She argues that students are the only ones with a dress code. She states that students should be able to express themselves using their own judgement. A dress code enforces discipline toward learning by changing a person’s attitude toward success. Students generally act the way they are dressed. With fewer fashion distractions, school will be seen as a priority for teaching and learning rather than trend competitions. This alteration leads to modification in grades because it’s much easier to focus when everyone is dressed alike. Furthermore, a student’s attendance also improves; with the relief of picking out a new outfit every morning.

In Hong Kong, most schools require their students to wear school uniforms. My team is definitely in favour of schools having their students wear school uniforms.
