What’s one’s favorite thing to wear? Does one enjoy picking out outfits to wear to school? I certainly do, but sometimes it is hard having a dress code. I understand why we need one so nobody wears anything inappropriate, but for the people who wouldn’t wear anything like that, it can be tough sometimes finding clothes that meet standards. Every school has a dress code, some stricter than others, but when the question, “what would I change about it if I could”, came up, I would change the rule about shorts. Our rule about shorts is that they have to be down to where our arms hanged relaxed. I recommend that we should be able to wear shorter shorts if wanted because long shorts are hard to find, the rule is not completely fair, and with …show more content…
Shorter shorts would be better because stores don’t sell long shorts, none are what you like, and it is not the styles today. Everyone likes to show their style, and in my opinion, having a dress code is like forcing someone to wear what they don’t like. Finding shorts that meet dress code is very difficult but also it’s not fair. The second reason I wish the dress code was different is that I don’t particularly think it’s fair. A lot of things aren’t fair, “life isn’t fair”, I get that. However, having the opportunity to wear any length of shorts would be a good change because once again, it’s not fair. Some girls are taller than others, some have longer arms, and finding the required shorts can be expensive if you can even find them! Although having to wear long shorts is not fair, shorter pants would also make you cooler. Thirdly, I want what we have to wear to be reviewed because getting to wear shorter shorts makes me cooler! When the warm weather hits, every student wishes they have cooler clothes on. Wanting the change of wearing shorter shorts is important because one would be cooler by being more comfortable in class, being able to be more agile in gym and outside at recess, and not as many people would be hot and sweaty, which produces a better environment and thus concentration. Having this option just doesn’t keep one cool, it does all the things
If there were dress codes in school, it would eliminate violence and bullying. If there was a kid who liked to wear a different style of clothing then others, then he would probably get teased or maybe even get beaten up. Also, it reduces violence and makes students behave better because it makes everyone equal, bringing all of the students to the same level. "A dress code brings us together, like an athletic team. We're unified, we stand for the same things," said Bob Sanders, a teacher at Anti...
"Dress Code!" MasterFILE Complete. Educational Leadership, Dec.-Jan. 2014-2015. Web. 18 Feb. 2016. This article comes from the point of view of a school principal Thomas R. Hoerr. Hoerr starts of with a comment that was made to him about a young girl and what she was wearing. The comment referred to her undergarments. The author continues to explain the two points he learned, and because of those points, he made his school a casual place. The dress code he established only proclaims to be “neat and clean.” The author saw no problem until the attire came so close as to be dressing at the beach, so he conducted a meeting with his staff and decided something should be said. When the author wrote the work dress guidelines, he got the input of the teachers and what should be expected by each guideline. However, the author only sent out the draft to people who had worked with him for fifteen or more years, so the question arose that the world is changing and he needed opinions from younger teachers. When he received feedback, he was questioned on if some codes really made a difference, and he made some changes. Next Hoerr tells his readers that when they give a restriction on something, they must have a rational reason why. Hoerr’s reason was that the school staff needed to have a professional experience, which make since because some students might not take their teacher seriously if he or she is dressed for bed. This article uses logos by appealing to logic on
I disagree with the school dress code because it doesn't allow people to express themselves, people can't dress for the weather, and it doesn't let people choose how they want to look because it's supposedly a distraction. The dress code is "The bottom of your shirt must at least meet the top of your pants or shorts, and undergarments should not be exposed. There must be a substantial covering over both shoulders. See-through clothing or clothing that is so very tight that it draws attention to oneself are also unacceptable. Shorts/skirts must have at least a 4" inseam."
The first dress code rule that should be changed is fingertip length shorts. I know the reason for this is so that boys won't be “distracted”, but instead of telling girls what they can't wear, we need to teach boys to not be perverts. Also some boys wouldn't even notice the shorts if the teachers, and staff wouldn't make such a big deal about it. I know some shorts can be
Dress code enforces the modest dress of students, preventing bullying and distractions.Numerous people believe clothing is a distraction and when eliminated the school environment is more professional and gives a better education to a student. Authority figures consider the school apparel enforcements are constitutionally sound, not affecting the child’s right to freely express, and providing a professional and working setting causing a better learning environment and decreased amount of bullying due to clear differences in appearance. However, opposers disagree with the restrictive code because of its limitations on individuality
Dress codes have always existed in the United States. They were especially popular throughout the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. Once the ‘80s hit, the dress code fad began to die off until the late ‘90s came around. At the beginning of 1997, three percent of public schools required school uniforms, and by the end of 2000, the percentage had increased to twenty-one percent (“School Uniforms Timeline” 2). This is when school uniforms began to come back into style. More and more schools are now adapting school dress code policies. According to Matt Buesing, about twenty-two percent of children across the nation wore some form of a dress code in 2010 (Cavazos 2). Since then, David Brunsma has found that about one in eight public middle schools and high schools in the United States have policies about what students are supposed to wear to school (Motsinger 1). For example, certain schools have a strict dress code that ma...
As a teenager, clothing is a very large role in your life. After all, your style portrays your personality and the crowd that you hang out with. Most teens spend nearly all of their income on buying the next fashion. But today, teens have to second think their purchases for they may not be able to wear them at their school. Public schools have begun to crack down on the dress code, causing high school students to have to ditch half their wardrobe. The public school dress code is questionable in that is the wardrobe of students really affecting the way they learn and act, and are some of the codes really necessary.
No shirts that reveal midriffs are allowed either. Sometimes the amount of how much a girl’s back is showing is restricted. Leggings and yoga pants cannot be too tight, and in some schools they are banned completely. [...] These regulations clearly apply to girls more-so than they do boys. Boys shorts are made longer, their tank tops have thicker straps, and they have no bra straps or cleavage to hide. Do we really think that this all is a coincidence?(1)
School dress codes are not a good idea. They have become too strict and limit the students’ freedom of expression, and freedom of speech. (School Dress Codes) A person is given the freedom of expression and the freedom of speech under the First Amendment of the United States Constitution.
At the beginning of my 8th grade year, when it was still very hot out, I wore a pair of shorts to school. The shorts were past my fingertips, which is what the dress code required. Yet, as I left the cafeteria to go back to class, the lunch aide called me out to stand against the wall with a group of girls. We were all marched to the office to have our shorts scrutinized by the principle. I stood in line watching girls call home to have new clothes brought to them, or sent back to class as their shorts were approved, I was a bewildered and appalled. I knew my shorts were long enough. After the principle examined, and of course approved me, I trudged off to class 20 minutes late. Is it right girls have to miss learning time
To many schools’ disappointment, the strict dress code is doing just the opposite of bringing peace within the school. Many students are ready to walk out or join the rebellion of the dress code; its ridiculous message playing that looks matter
Also I don’t feel comfortable wearing long shorts to school because of how many people many people get made fun of for that. I would like to be in an environment where I can be comfortable and self confident in school, so if the lengths of bottoms must be was cut back by a few inches I feel like this would solve the problem. The shoulder rule is one of the rules I think is unfair to the students. I went to Central Middle School, and when I went there the rule was that the strap of the shirt had to be three fingertip lengths. Something similar to this should be put into place but not using fingers, using a standard length, for example two inches.
In fact, many parents agreed that one of the most remarkable benefits of having schools uniforms is that the prices are very cost effective and reasonable and reduce the burden of buying expensive clothes every now and then. School uniforms might not be very stylish and fashionable, but they can help us concentrate on study and not on clothing. As we get older we begin to pay more attention to our appearance. This can be a big distraction. In this case, wearing school uniforms will help. In addition, as a student I really appreciate the many conveniences that school uniform brought to us. I’m glad I don’t have to spend 10 minutes every morning deciding my wardrobe. I’m glad I don’t have to worry about what brands I wear, or whether I look good in that outfit, because we all look
Relevance Statement:I will state that I too at times wondered why school dress code exist, as it effects a large portion student in America.
The final reason, and possibly the most important of the three to change the dress code is that by telling a students that they have to change, a teacher or administrator is putting the value of the other students’ education above the dress code offender. Most often, the reason a student’s are told to change because their outfits are too distracting. a pair of shorts isn’t harming anyone, nor is it offensive. Are shoulders and legs so arousing that it completely stops anybody from being able to focus at all? Then, what will the suspect think? He or she can’t wear what she wants to because the education of the male students in her class is more important? It puts a student in a very tough spot because they are forced to make the decision between wearing what they want or wearing something that takes who they are away from
