A student’s high school career should be about discovering new knowledge and discovering who you are, not about what you wore. One rule that I would change at Ralston is the dress code policy. The dress code policy limits a student's right to express themselves, be comfortable in what they wear and ultimately put a higher value some students over others.
A student’s right to express themselves, as long as it’s not harming someone, should never be denied. Not every student can easily write a poem or paint a portrait about how they feel, but all students can use clothes to show who they are and how they feel. When a student is told that they have to change, it’s almost like saying they have to change who they are too. Clothes are the most important part of a first impression. They allow a student to pride, not only in what they are wearing, but for their school, or their sports team, or the play they got cast in.

up every day, or just wear a t-shirt, clothing allows you to be proud of who you are. During the spring term, it seems as if everyone turns to t-shirts and shorts to wear. The hot sun blazes through the windows, and students are caught between wishing it was summer and wishing that the air conditioning woked. Telling a student that their shorts are too short denies them basic comfort. Athletic shorts aren’t meant to gain looks and distract other students from learning, they are meant to be a comfortable material to wear it hot weather. In fact, most outfits aren’t meant to distract, they are worn to make the person wearing them feel good about themselves.
The final reason, and possibly the most important of the three to change the dress code is that by telling a students that they have to change, a teacher or administrator is putting the value of the other students’ education above the dress code offender. Most often, the reason a student’s are told to change because their outfits are too distracting. a pair of shorts isn’t harming anyone, nor is it offensive. Are shoulders and legs so arousing that it completely stops anybody from being able to focus at all? Then, what will the suspect think? He or she can’t wear what she wants to because the education of the male students in her class is more important? It puts a student in a very tough spot because they are forced to make the decision between wearing what they want or wearing something that takes who they are away from
them. The dress code policy clearly needs to be fixed. A student should be allowed to express themselves in comfort and style without being worried if they are going to be asked to change. Please consider making changes today, and allowing a student to dress how they want to, instead of they have to.
Schools typically justify their dress codes by maintain that it’s important to keep the classroom free of any distractions, however, that language actually reinforces the idea that women’s bodies are inherently tempting to men and it’s their responsibility to cover themselves up.
As unnecessary, to most students, as it may seem, school uniforms can actually carry a lot of potent. According to a bulletin produced by the National Association of Secondary School Principals, it stated that “When all students are wearing the same outfit, they are less concerned about how they look and how they fit in; thus, they can concentrate on their schoolwork.” Students do not have to emphasize on what to wear to school each day; they tend to focus more on their education rather than to learn who is wearing the latest fashion trend. Students may start to digress to a point where they are even clueless about what they had learned during their entire school year. It is saddening to realize that these students would prioritize their clothing over their education instead. Providing uniforms to the students would have a tremendous effect over these students and the school systems. Students would not have to spend great amounts of money on clothing in order to receive the praise or attention of their friends and/or family; vice-versa, students who don’t have the money to afford the latest clothing will not have to suffer the gossips of their poor taste of

All children express themselves differently. Clothing choice is a major part of their expression. Whether the child is wearing colorful shoes, an all black tuxedo, or religious T-shirt, he/she is sending a direct message. This form of expression can help teachers get to know the student individually. This is beneficial when engaging in conversation with the student. The student will in turn find the classroom setting more enjoyable. When children are required to wear uniforms, their freedom of expression is limited. There is no variation between what the students are wearing each day, and there are no clues to what the students’ personalities are. Dress code, probably one of the most talked about topics by teenagers. Most teenagers believe that dress code is “witless” or “incompetent”. Why do we think this? Well, most adults believe that keeping a strict dress code keeps us educated because apparently our clothes are “distracting”. Now I can see how wearing booty shorts and a tank top would be distracting, but how is wearing sweatpants distracting? If anything wearing sweatpants keeps us comfortable, because I know that being uncomfortable is way more distracting than wearing sweatpants. When I wear sweatpants I can lay back and relax while the teacher talks, but if I am uncomfortable I am more likely to move around and fidget with my clothes rather than listen to the lesson.
As a teenager, clothing is a very large role in your life. After all, your style portrays your personality and the crowd that you hang out with. Most teens spend nearly all of their income on buying the next fashion. But today, teens have to second think their purchases for they may not be able to wear them at their school. While dress codes are a necessity in schools to regulate what is and is not appropriate for the learning environment, the fact that they place blame on females for how they are treated because of their clothing is completely sexist and unfair. Hardly ever is a boy busted for wearing athletic shorts or bro-tanks when he should not be, but as soon as a girl wears leggings or shows her shoulders, she is persecuted and given punishment. This is about as unfair as school systems can be, and it also sends the message to girls that what they perceive as being cute and fashionable is perceived by others as “offensive” and that it is their fault for anything bad that happens to them. These ideas should be changed so girls do not have to feel guilty and boys can stop thinking that their behavior in these situations is acceptable.
