A student’s high school career should be about discovering new knowledge and discovering who you are, not about what you wore. One rule that I would change at Ralston is the dress code policy. The dress code policy limits a student's right to express themselves, be comfortable in what they wear and ultimately put a higher value some students over others.
A student’s right to express themselves, as long as it’s not harming someone, should never be denied. Not every student can easily write a poem or paint a portrait about how they feel, but all students can use clothes to show who they are and how they feel. When a student is told that they have to change, it’s almost like saying they have to change who they are too. Clothes are the most important part of a first impression. They allow a student to pride, not only in what they are wearing, but for their school, or their sports team, or the play they got cast in.

The final reason, and possibly the most important of the three to change the dress code is that by telling a students that they have to change, a teacher or administrator is putting the value of the other students’ education above the dress code offender. Most often, the reason a student’s are told to change because their outfits are too distracting. a pair of shorts isn’t harming anyone, nor is it offensive. Are shoulders and legs so arousing that it completely stops anybody from being able to focus at all? Then, what will the suspect think? He or she can’t wear what she wants to because the education of the male students in her class is more important? It puts a student in a very tough spot because they are forced to make the decision between wearing what they want or wearing something that takes who they are away from
Uniforms don’t allow any personality to show through. She was objective in her views because she gave both pros and cons of having a school’s dress code and how each issue can affect the school’s community including parents. The author continues to explain the two points he learned, and because of those points, he made his school a casual place. The dress code he established only proclaims to be “neat and clean.” The author saw no problem until the attire came so close as to be dressing at the beach, so he conducted a meeting with his staff and decided something should be said. When the author wrote the work dress guidelines, he got the input of the teachers and what should be expected by each guideline. However, the author only sent out the draft to people who had worked with him for fifteen or more years, so the question arose that the world is changing and he needed opinions from younger teachers.
Dress code, probably one of the most talked about topics by teenagers. Most teenagers believe that dress code is “witless” or “incompetent”. Why do we think this? Well, most adults believe that keeping a strict dress code keeps us educated because apparently our clothes are “distracting”. Now I can see how wearing booty shorts and a tank top would be distracting, but how is wearing sweatpants distracting? If anything wearing sweatpants keeps us comfortable, because I know that being uncomfortable is way more distracting than wearing sweatpants. When I wear sweatpants I can lay back and relax while the teacher talks, but if I am uncomfortable I am more likely to move around and fidget with my clothes rather than listen to the lesson.
Schools typically justify their dress codes by maintain that it’s important to keep the classroom free of any distractions, however, that language actually reinforces the idea that women’s bodies are inherently tempting to men and it’s their responsibility to cover themselves up.
All children express themselves differently. Clothing choice is a major part of their expression. Whether the child is wearing colorful shoes, an all black tuxedo, or religious T-shirt, he/she is sending a direct message. This form of expression can help teachers get to know the student individually. This is beneficial when engaging in conversation with the student. The student will in turn find the classroom setting more enjoyable. When children are required to wear uniforms, their freedom of expression is limited. There is no variation between what the students are wearing each day, and there are no clues to what the students’ personalities are. All of the children are seen as the same and having the same personality. Without the ability to express themselves through clothing, children may choose a more disruptive way in doing so such as verbally and/or physically. But, school is not the place to show student’s interests and likes, school is strictly for learning. If a student wants to wear a shirt that shows his/her’s religion, political view, or profanity, he or she can wear the clothing outside of school. Choosing what to wear for the day. This is what most students are thinking about when they wake up. Students need the latest fashion in order to fit in, but some clothing may not be acceptable to wear in school. School dress codes are denying students their right to dress how they want, but the dress code is important for the students and their learning. Students are beginning to stand up and want to be heard. Some students are taking action and want the dress code to become less strict but some schools are doing the opposite for safety issues and for the students healthy learning environment. While dress codes are a necessity in schools to regulate what is and is not appropriate for the learning environment, the fact that they place blame on females for how they are treated because of their clothing is completely sexist and unfair. Hardly ever is a boy busted for wearing athletic shorts or bro-tanks when he should not be, but as soon as a girl wears leggings or shows her shoulders, she is persecuted and given punishment. This is about as unfair as school systems can be, and it also sends the message to girls that what they perceive as being cute and fashionable is perceived by others as “offensive” and that it is their fault for anything bad that happens to them. These ideas should be changed so girls do not have to feel guilty and boys can stop thinking that their behavior in these situations is acceptable.
