A Scholarly Advancement Session Reflection
Assessing the interactions that I observed over the last several days, I ascertained the professional development delivery chosen, suitable for this group of educators. Moreover, respect and camaraderie are present in the Willingboro School. Those that are in a leadership role are demonstrating nurturing guidance towards their fellow colleague, teacher, or the maturing students in their care. Thus, as I assess and examine the preliminary draft of the professional development session that I am going to deliver, I believe that I have determined the correct delivery format the lesson study. Additionally, through personal insight, I will explain my views with enough clarity to demonstrate convincing evidence
for this project (What is analysis, n.d.). As I make a self-assessment of the drafted professional development session, I reviewed the strategies that I incorporated into the session (a) participant prior knowledge, (b) pause and discussion time throughout the PowerPoint delivery, (c) handouts for participant’s independent research opportunities, (d) collaborative and active strategy involvement time, (e) session evaluation, and (f) future topic focus. Additionally, I reviewed my research course through Likert surveys and diverse topic choices. In planning the professional development in-service session, I analyzed for possible delivery issues that could arise. Issues that concerned me prior or during the professional development session delivery, focused on (a) additionally technology apparatuses, (b) attendance issues, (c) technical difficulties and (d) session time allotment. Accordingly, proactive planning for problematic issues is at hand to compensate if they occur. Specifically, time restraints or attendance could be resolved through future scheduled sessions. Likewise, initial or follow-up session recording posted online would alleviate an educator’s personal attendance facet. Inasmuch as technological interferences risk, planning for a technology personnel party would be arranged. Then, with attention to additional warranted time needs, scheduling allotments could be projected onto a monthly calendar for updated modifications and reference.
I can help my teachers be professional learners by using observation and evaluation processes, like those found in Danielson’s model, to promote self-assessment, reflection on practices, and professional conversations with them. The Framework can help me have honest, reflective conversations with the teachers about their instruction and I can use it as a guide to help all involved in professional development decisions. Laura Jimenez’s article “The Next Frontier of Education Reform” was a well thought out article about the possibility for a new program called LEAP or LEarning Together to Advance Our Practice to help improve the failing system of improving our public school educators. Jimenez uses accurate data to show the reasons behind the need to reform educator professional development and shows different examples of how this could be accomplished. She largely looks at the DC public school system’s IMPACT and the newly created LEAP projects.
Professional development for educators is an important step in learning new ways to educate, implement new practices and administering the best possible outcomes for children 's wellbeing. Depending on the child’s circumstances it is also important to search for other means of opinion. In this case accommodating the child’s family and the community in which he or she lives in and advancing towards promoting worthwhile relationships. Relationship building encourages parents in working collaboratively with professionals to create environments of support and enthusiasm around the best interests of the child.
The first member, Kristen, read the book called “A Perfect Night to go to China” by David Gilmour. Simply put, the book is about a father who is unable to find his son and consequently his life starts to fall apart. As the speaker was giving her brief summary, I was really intrigued when she mentioned the diverse characters. The main character, Roman – the father of the lost child, is more kept to himself and introverted. His wife on the other hand is essentially the exact opposite. She is more open with her emotions and not afraid of expressing it towards Roman. Stories with multi-dimensional characters are always exciting to read, seeing as how there are sometimes unique perspectives. Surprisingly, Kristen – who actually read the book in its entirety, did not like it very much. She was expecting a better ending and was disappointed by the unnecessary build up of suspense. With that being said, I am not going to discredit this book until I read it myself.
Traditionally, teacher development typically occurs through trial and error in the isolated confinements of each teacher’s classroom with some periodic whole-group professional development (Goddard & Goddard, 2007). Within the past few decades, many schools and districts, including ours, have considered and experimented with Professional Learning Communities (PLC) as an alternative framework in guiding a more efficient development program for their teachers. PLCs are focused on enhancing student learning through developing teacher practices. The concept of PLC relies on using structured collaborative sessions amongst teachers within the school to build internal capacity. Through PLCs, teachers critically reflect on current practices, brainstorm solutions, and obtain help and advice from others in a supportive growth-oriented environment over an extended period of time (Vescio, Ross, & Adams, 2008; Nelson, 2009; Scher & O'Reilly, 2009; Bolam, McMahon, Stoll, Thomas, & Wallace, 2005). The theory of change guiding PLCs holds that by providing teachers with targeted support from within the school community, as oppose to hiring additional outside experts, professional developments can become for efficient. Implementation of effective PLCs requires intentional effort, school-wide and possibly district-wide restructuring of teacher schedules, and additional resources. For schools considering implementing PLCs, it is important to understand the logic of action and the benefits of PLCs as it relates to teacher improvement and increased student achievement.
Going to the ASCP Conference as a first time resident is so much exciting and it will help me to will sharpen my mind and skills in different ways. Just attending the conference, reading about new post and blogs, listen to podcasts and watch great people teach us how to do our work in great way, will help to open my mind and sharpen my future about learning and doing my job. Learning in the space is an important step for my future career, I always love learning and enjoy it. Attending some of the best workshops and presentations are important steps. Espcially the one I’ve never been or I had no idea about before the conference, but after that it became an essential part of my life and work.
Starting the fifth week of my internship I feel as though I have grown a lot in my internship position as well as starting to make the connections of how my coursework at Johnson and Wales University is preparing me for my future endeavors. Being able to see my hard work payoff is satisfying, but I am also realizing where I am missing skills and knowledge and how I can better tailor my remaining time at Johnson and Wales to better prepare myself after I graduate. Taking classes in person with my professors I think have been one of the most beneficial aspects for my internship. The conference was extremely helpful and I was able to make contact with several learning center directors in the field for resources. I enjoy attending conferences, it gives me the opportunity to gain so many new ideas, get recharged (motivated), and network to see what others are doing in their learning centers. I’m actually in my office working this morning so emailing you back is no problem.
Through my experience working as a Resident Adviser (RA), I have noticed inequities and injustices that exist in the educational system. My first year as a RA, one of my residents identified as a transgender female. She was extremely open about her transition, would answer any questions and expressed interest in wanting to have a roommate and suitemates, but was mandated a single room. It wasn’t until my second year as a RA that I realized how unjust that student was being treated. Through conversation with a coworker who is a member of the LGBTQ community, he explained to me that higher education isn’t as accommodating to members of the LGBTQ community as they could be. On Tuesday, September first I met with my academic advisor, Dr. Ana Londono for the first time. We met in her office on the first floor of Young Hall. She informed me that it was only her third week as an advisor at Lindenwold University. I was a bit nervous after hearing that because my major is Pre-Nursing and I had a lot of questions to ask. One of my main reason of making an appointment with my advisor was to ask when I would be able to apply for nursing school. I took a lot of college credit classes in high school.
