The conference was extremely helpful and I was able to make contact with several learning center directors in the field for resources. I enjoy attending conferences, it gives me the opportunity to gain so many new ideas, get recharged (motivated), and network to see what others are doing in their learning centers. I’m actually in my office working this morning so emailing you back is no problem.
I can certainly find 3-4 students who are willing to meet. On Tuesday, April 11th Mrs. Vanilla Hannah is coming to speak with a group of black students to give a brief historical background and timeline of the BASS organization. She was heavily involved in BASS when she was a student on our campus. I’m hoping this will motivate students to want to
get involved and start the dialogue about what are the current needs for our minority students on our campus. I will plan to schedule our meeting with students after Mrs. Hannah speaks with the group. I spoke with Dara over the phone yesterday and she is so delightful, energetic, and encouraging. I really enjoyed our conversation. I think she helped me more than I was able to help her. I plan to stay in contact with her in the future. She gave me ideas to think about when approaching services for minorities. Enjoy your conference. I will talk with you soon.
The purpose of this organization is to bring people of all racial backgrounds together on a bi-weekly basis in a mission to provide a constructive exchange, including topics of education, culture, civic duty, recreational events, finance, health, and social events to promote the projects and philosophy of Black Students on Campus.
At the beginning of this class, students were warned about coming into this class with a certain mindset. Students were warned not to have the preconception of thinking that COMS 201 would teach them how to manipulate others into doing what they wanted. Guilty of this mindset I attempted to trick myself into thinking that I did not have that mindset. Getting through the first few modules on theory was difficult. I remember asking myself, “What did I sign up for?”. After getting through the first few modules I began to enjoy what I was learning, so much so, I caught myself referencing what I had learned in COMS 201 in other aspects of my life. AP Seminar was my first experience in an environment that was completely dedicated to learning, without the fixation on the letter grades that ‘determine’ success. My peers were my teachers. I discussed, debated, and collaborated with peers that shared various viewpoints on thought provoking issues that challenged my own. I learned to ask the ‘Whys?,’ ‘Hows?,’ and ‘What Ifs?’ and dive deeper into discussion. The environment fostered differences in interests, mindsets, and intellect. I went to the school board meeting on March 21, 2016 in Kanawha. The following people were at the council: Wayne Kronneman, Leah Deutsch, Ryan Hiscocks, Ryan Johnson, Jay Burgardt, Mona Buns, Gary Chizek, Todd Hammer, and Jon Harle. The others were mainly community member which included teachers, principals, parents and supporters. Some of the West Hancock staff included Mr. Peterson, Mrs. DeHart, Mrs. Bruns, Mr. Francis, Mrs. Gast and others. The other people who were there were parents and other community members. The first part of the meeting was the revision of the budget and presentation of the budget. This was given by Wayne Kronneman. He explained the budget of this year and how it compared to last years. I will be discussing about my reflection on the Six Week Group Content/Intervention Mid-term project and my internship. The assignment is on Psychoeducational and Counseling Groups for adolescents who are encountering dating violence from their partner. Exploration Passages is a program that many people have probably never heard of or even more, they never knew that this program exist. So what made me choose the Exploration Program? Honestly, my first choice was to take Exploration Prerequisites to complete my chemistry and physic courses that I have not taken during my high school year since I needed those courses to get into nursing or dentistry. I got a rejection letter and I was really sad about it. In that moment, I was not certain of what program I want to take anymore because, like I mention earlier, the programs I wanted to get into requires chemistry and physic. I realize that I was tired of Marie-Anne ( the adult school I attended to redo my French course ) and that I really wanted to attend college so I decided to explore other program to apply to. I came across Exploration Passages! While reading the description, it got my attention that this program will help me discover other program that would suit me and I really needed that since I have to rethink of a program to take. I want to list some of the positive and negative things about the event that I attended. The positives would be that I did not have to use an interpreter to communicate with anyone, everyone knew sign language and it was a bit awkward because like I said, I am used to having that communication barrier in my world, so it was fun and I felt so much more independent; I even started asking everyone for more information on their stuff that they 're marketing or where things were because usually in the hearing world, I would just say nothing and hope that things will reveal themselves to me. Almost everyone were very friendly and shared their life experiences with me, making me feel like I 'm part of the family and it was hard for me to do the same since I 've raised not to really share anything and just to listen to what everyone 's saying and say nothing to contribute anyways. That also made me realize that my deafness does not have a big D, because I 've been taught to think and act like a hearing person, so it 's definitely hard for me to connect with deaf people. Overall this trip gave me an even deeper understand and desire to share this teaching method with others. To keep the idea, text, good, true and beautiful at the focus for all persons to grow. Thank you to all those who gave towards the teacher appreciation fund, as the chocolate covered strawberries we delicious. I was able to use the gift card to help with my expense for the week, and even have a little extra to visit the Denver Museum on Thursday with the other teachers. It was a wonderful trip where we were all able to become the students to learn and grown
I can bring diversity to Northside. I am one of the few African-American kids at my school. I have been exposed to racism from a young age. Being in this environment has taught me that race and discrimination are one of the biggest problems in the world today. I am open about racism and try to discuss race with my friends. I am interested in the school’s black student union.
In terms of Personal Development I feel that the course has helped me to develop the skills I need to improve my grades, and to build my confidence.
This course opened my eyes to the importance of dialogue in ways that I had not previously considered. I did not know in counseling you should only talk 30 percent of the time and that the remaining 70 percent should be the counselee’s time to talk. My typical counseling sessions in the past were about 50/50 dialogue. I thought that the counselee needed my opinion. A majority of my sessions included this amount of dialogue, which I am now understanding was not helpful to those people. Even though several people did have great results due to our sessions, they will looked to me in the future for more answers to various problems. This made the counseling relationship more dependent on my advice rather than them talking out their problem
It is not everyday when you can say the majority of your college class is you talking and the teacher listening, this is seminar. Coming from a family where heated debates were present almost daily, I already know if I were passionate about a topic I would never pass up an opportunity to express my opinions. For me, seminar has allowed me to grow in this confidence of expressing my thoughts as well as learning from others opinions. Having come from a high school that stressed the importance of student participation, I was not surprised by the amount I would actually have to speak in this class, however I was surprised by the importance of disagreements and the proper way to analyze text through underlining, highlighting and questioning and how it could aid my overall understanding of a text. Being a psychology major and extremely interested in social justice issues, seminar also opened my eyes up to the interesting perspectives of the strength of human nature.
All in all, I felt that this lesson implementation was a good experience for me, I learned a lot from last semesters practicum, and feel more comfortable teaching the children while being observed and am able to manage the class much better, although I am still quite nervous, which is something that I will continue to work on.
