Activism is very important to me and I strive to not just stand and watch the world with criticism but rather make the changes I’d like to see. Santa Clara University’s strategic vision promises to educate with intents to build a more humane world through compassion and competence which appeals to me strongly. My interest in IO psychology stems from wanting to do as much as I can to help businesses change in a way that will increase productivity and general satisfaction. It opened avenues to jobs that were in the past restricted to Whites and gave African Americans an increasingly important role in the war against fascism in Europe. The new self-consciousness that evolved out of these developments invigorated the Black freedom struggle and led to increasingly self-assertive demands to full citizenship. Especially African American soldiers, who risked their lives to defend the freedom of Europeans, were reluctant to accept the continuing curtailment of their freedom and rights upon their return to the United States. Restraint and Activism Judicial activism is loosely defined as decisions or judgements handed down by judges that take a broad interpretation of the constitution. It is a decision that is more of a reflection of how the judge thinks the law should be interpreted, rather than how the law has or was intended to be interpreted. There are many examples of judicial activism; examples include the opinions of Sandra Day O'Connor in the Lynch v. Donnelly and the Wallace v. Jaffree trials. Sandra Day argues for the changing of the First Amendment's ban on "establishment" of religion into a ban on "endorsement" of religion. Others include the U.S. v. Kinder, where Congress passed legislation that would require a minimum sentence for persons caught distributing more than 10 grams of cocaine.
Teen activists are inspiring and helpful. They are the ones who are determined to make a difference in the world. They are the ones who never give up on their dreams and hopes. Through their thoughts, sacrifice, determination, and their inspiring heart, they make the world happy, so everyone can live equally. Three teen activists, Malala Yousafzai, Alex Lin, and Iqbal Masih, use their personalities and inspiration so that they can stop unfair education, pollution, and child labor. They are willing to sacrifice to help the world and change history.
The Civil Rights Movement of the 50's and 60's was arguably one of the most formative and influential periods in American history. Hundreds of thousands of civil rights activists utilized non violent resistance and civil disobediance to revolt against racial segregration and discrimination. The Civil Rights Movement began in the southern states, but quickly rose to national prominence.
The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) believe it or not was the strongest civil rights organization during the 1960s and 70s. The unusually thing was that the SNCC did not want to be an organization, they were stuck on just being a movement. In Struggle is a great book to learn about SNCC. Clayborne Carson rewrote the introduction and epilogue in 1994, in the introduction he outlines exactly want the book is about. Carson has three points in book which are how SNCC came together, how SNCC development after early defeats, and lastly how SNCC resolved their differences.
The second focus in the University of Charleston’s mission statement is enlightened living (Ucwv.edu, Mission. 2018). The University defines enlightened living is defined as “having a broad range of knowledge in such subjects as economy, politics, art, literature, history, values, moral purpose, and personal character (Ucwv.edu, Mission. 2018). Being involved in the campus at UC helped me to learn about enlightened living. Even though LLOs are normally applied to class I feel that the UC incorporates them into everything they do. “To create an effective environment where students can learn to live enlightened lives they must be taught the rights and responsibilities associated with social, political and economic communities” (Ucwv.edu, LLO. 2018).
I am confident that I will be an excellent candidate for the graduate program offered at Nova Southeastern University for the Specialist Program in School Psychology. I have gained the necessary experience and knowledge from my education and work environment to enable me to make major contributions to your organization. My intentions are to graduate from Saint Joseph 's University with a degree in applied behavioral analysis, then to proceed onto the next step in my career as a behavior specialist councilor, where I can help families through creating concrete goals and plans and models to measure these goals, as well as to ensure that parents are supplied with the resources required and an efficient team to help them.
The primary trait that I lack is confidence. In my mind, others are always smarter, prettier, more driven, and just better than me. Because of this attitude, I do not usually voice my opinions, state my ideas, or take control of anything; I automatically assume that anything I say or do is wrong or stupid. Although I still need to work on strengthening my confidence, SMU’s community atmosphere, specifically the Hilltop scholars program, has given me the enormous confidence boost I need to step out of my comfort zone and make my ideas a reality. A gain of confidence through supportive communities is apparent in the films Legally Blonde, Renaissance Man, and Higher Learning because each film includes individuals who need greater self-confidence, which comes from the support of their communities. In “The Quest for Community in Higher Education,” Parker Palmer outlines specifically how community can build up confidence. Additionally, in “The SMU Community According to Etzioni,” Christiano Gallo illustrates that confidence promotes involvement, which promotes confidence. The support I feel from various members of the SMU community has provided me with experiences similar to Elle, Rago, and Malik’s and has helped me understand how Palmer’s ideas foster confidence. Also, encouragement from others has opened my eyes to how involvement can instill confidence. Community gives us somebody to lean on. Somebody to lean on gives us confidence.
As the Civil Rights movement raged in the 1960s, new sources of media, such as photography, became cheap and readily available to all people. One such group, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Community (SNCC), utilized this opportunity to show their side of the Civil Rights movement and convey their messages as they fought for freedom in the black community. Photography was a defining piece of SNCC, as it allowed them to capture the truth and the side of American life not everyone had the option to see. As I look at the title Courage to Grow I asked myself , “Do I possess that courage to grow?” That courage I need to begin my journey into my college life and know that I will be successful through such journey. To both I answered yes. Being a first generation college student there is pressure on my shoulders to be great. People decide to join social movements for many reasons. People all around the world join social movements because they will likely have an enormous impact on their nation community. The main reason that people join social movements is because they want change or they do not want change. Social movements usually focus on trying to create an impact on political issues or social issues. A government that is abusing power could experience social movements. Whether or not the government is trying to keep the same laws or change laws completely makes no difference in a social movement. People in a country that is already working fine might create social movements to protest the changing of its laws. If the people of a country grow tired of the current laws they can create social movements. People participating in social movements get mobilized by a strong influential person or idea.
