ACTIVE MINDS: CHANGING THE CONVERSATION ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH
Statement of Need In 2014, there were 42,773 deaths by suicide in the United States. Though suicide rates decreased from 1990-2000 from 12.5 suicides per 100,000 to 10.4 per 100,000, over the past decade, however, the rate has again increased to 12.1 per 100,000. Every day, approximately 105 Americans die by suicide and there is nearly one death by suicide in the U.S. every 12.3 minutes. (CDC). There is one suicide for every estimated 25 suicide attempts and one suicide for every estimated 4 suicide attempts in the elderly. (CDC). Suicide takes the lives of over 38,000 Americans every year and only an estimated quarter of a million people each year become suicide survivors. (AAS).

She wanted to combat the stigma of mental illness, encourage students who needed help to seek it early, and prevent future tragedies like the one that took her brother’s life. After searching unsuccessfully for existing groups that she could simply bring to her campus, Alison created her own model and formed what was then known as Open Minds.
After a great first year, Open Minds at Penn gained enough support that it expanded onto other campuses. Kate Hard dedicated her first year as a Georgetown University transfer student to bringing the Penn program, and mental health awareness, to her new campus. At that time she founded the second chapter of Active Minds at Georgetown, which gained the same momentum and support as had the Penn chapter.
The constant growth continued, and the National headquarters was established in Washington, DC during the summer of 2003. The new non-profit organization, and all of the affiliated campus chapters, was then renamed Active Minds, Inc., to reflect the progressive nature of this form of student advocacy in the mental health

We aim to grow that to 15,000 leaders on at least 500 campuses over the next four years.

Mental health disparities, “the power imbalances that impact practices influencing access, quality, and outcomes of behavioral health care, or a significant disparity in the overall rate of disease incidence, prevalence, morbidity, mortality, or survival rate in a specific group of people defined along racial and ethnic lines, as compared with the general population” (Safran, 2011). Although there are many mental health care dipartites, I’m going to focus on the impact of poverty and lack of attention given to mental health. By advocating for a prevention, promotion, and intervention related to mental health, will aid in minimizing mental health disparities. Not only is it important to advocate on a macro level, but it is important to educate
In today’s society, the stigma around mental health has caused many people to fear seeking medical treatment for problems they are dealing with. With an abundance of hateful outlooks and stereotypical labels such as: crazy, psycho, and dangerous, it is clear that people with a mental illness have a genuine reason to avoid pursuing medical treatments. Along with mental health stigma, psychiatric facilities that patients with a mental health issue attend in order to receive treatment obtain an excessive amount of unfavorable stereotypes.

There were over 44,000 that committed suicide in 2015, causing it to be in the top ten causes of death within the United States (Suicide). There are some areas within the United States that are more affected

Mental Health is a very important, in depth study that needs more support. Identification of mental stressors is a skill everyone should to have to live with increased mental health. New York State Healthy People 2020 has placed Mental Health as a priority, increasing awareness for mental health illness and prevention. Providing care for Healthcare workers is a small fraction of the entirety of mental health issues. Working in the hospital is stressful, caring for others takes a huge mental and emotional toll on providers. Identifying who is most at risk and understanding what is needed to prevent mental disorders is imperative as a healthcare worker. Mental Health is defined by Healthy People 2020 as having participation in productive activities,
The societal issue that I have selected is that of community inclusion for those people suffering with mental health issue and their ability to successfully integrate into the community, after years of institutional living. Two cornerstone of community building is movement beyond problem solving toward changing conditions, and the people affected should play a major part in improving the conditions (Homan, 2011). For those who are affected by mental illness, it is key that they are given resources necessary to live and thrive in their new environment.
The elderly are estimated to be about 12.5% of the population and according to the National Institute of Aging (NIA), the elderly accounted for about 15.7% of all suicides deaths. In 2007, the rate of suicide for the elderly was about 14.3 per 100,000. The numbers add up to one elderly committing suicide every 97 minutes. Among those that are 65 and older, there were about 14.9 per 100,000 reported...
Suicide is when someone takes their own life. There are various reasons why someone might end their own life. Most of the time depression has a significant impact towards suicide. For the 2020 measurement, the value we are working toward is to reduce the rate of suicidal deaths. The baseline measurement is 11.3 suicides per 100,000 population occurred in 2007. The target is to bring suicide rates to 10.2 suicides per 100,000 population. The target- setting method is a 10 percent improvement on suicidal deaths. The data that is measured is measured by the numerator representing the number of deaths due to suicide and the denominator representing the number of people per
The time to change mental health movement began in March of 2011 in England to show how people with mental health live and to show those who judge them that they should actually help them their goal was to help those with mental health issues not to feel isolated and alone but embrace themselves and those who judge them to show how their mean words and hate affect those with mental health.

When someone thinks of a mental facility, they often imagine a grim place filled with people screaming and refusing to take their medications. But, facilities such as the Oregon State Hospital, are beautiful in the interior and exterior. In general, most psychiatric facilities look just like a typical hospital that you’d go to for a broken bone. With these misconceptions, also comes misconceptions of the mental illnesses that brought that person to the facility in the first place. With the misconceptions about mental illness, stigmas have been formed that have negatively affected the lives of those living with them. “Just take pills” or “Just eat” are just two examples of the idiotic solutions people
Many factors contribute to the negative notion of mental illness from the stigmas associated with the illness and the lack of attention surrounding the subject. Although the previously discussed issues surrounding mental illness are very important, through my short yet intense experience as an intern at the West Oaks Outpatient Clinic, I became aware of the lack of knowledge as it relates to mental health on a micro level which then spills over to the macro level of social work, which is a social issue that is of great concern to me.
