For the past two years, I go to work everyday carrying someone else’s problem on my shoulders, officially making it my problem to fix. I reinforced my madness by telling my self that this phase in my life will pass. The irony of it is that life passed me by as I disappeared in the mist of trying to “fix” someone else’s problem. Each one of us has our own life challenges that we face everyday. Mine has been with the duties of the heart. My fiancé has fallen into the abyss of drugs, and it has made my personal life very difficult to fully live. One positive aspect I have gained from this unfortunate experience is the understanding that life is very delicate and in order for things to change in our lives we have to make changes. I am determined to invest my energy and time to productive and tangible outcomes such as my education.

Discrete trial teaching is a teaching method classified by the fast pace delivery and shortened period of instructions (5-20 seconds) and incorporation of prompts, which is also referred to as errorless learning. DTT is under the umbrella of ABA and it is a method used to teach new skills and behaviors to children on the autism spectrum. As well DTT uses a unique style of teaching, errorless learning. Which unlike the normal teaching of trial and error. This style of teaching has been shown to be very effective with children with autism. Despite the abundance of evidence demonstrating the advantages of ABA for individuals with ASD, some criticism still exists in regards to its methods. Due to some ethically-questionable punishment techniques utilized during Lovaas’s initial trials and ABA’s rigid application in animal training, some question if ABA should be used for human treatment (Brams, 2008). However, ABA has positively developed since its discovery and the use of ethically-sound procedures has become of utmost importance. To ensure that ethical standards are abided by, several preventative safety procedures are utilized. Observable data-collection and carefully-crafted program development are major components of ABA that not only allow for progress to be tracked, but they also help document behaviors and the steps utilized to reduce these behaviors. These programs and data are developed and reviewed by a team of individuals, with constant modifications being made throughout the duration of the treatment (Brams, 2008, p. 6). Many times, an Institutional Review Board is utilized as well to ensure that ethical procedures are maintained. Additionally, ABA has attempted to steer away from the use of punishment procedures and instead aims to utilize positive reinforcement in order to have the least-restrictive and most positive form of therapy possible (Lattal, St. Peter, & Escobar, 2013).

There are people who study this science in schools, hospitals, private practices and more. This science also interests me as well. I have already taken psychology in my junior year, and I am currently taking AP psychology in order to gain some credits for college. The study fascinates me; the reason being that it explains our behavior and what makes us different from any other species on this planet.
