1. What is your dominant style? What was you least (lowest total points) active style? Are the findings of the survey consistent with your opinion about you dominant style? - During our last group meeting we completed a survey, which helped us identify out individual style as a team player. Through a series of questions one of four styles were reached as a result and in my case collaborator was my dominant style, while communicator was my least active style. The findings that I reached at the end of the survey were very consistent with what I believed my individual style was prior to completing the survey. I displayed traits throughout all of my groups of someone focused on the ideal goal. Remaining on task, while also helping my teammates remain on focus as well. I was never much of the sociable one, often playing the background while still contributing and completing the task at hand. 2. What is the contribution that style makes to a group environment? - As the collaborator I am able to contribute several aspects to the group environment. I am able to bring the group together for ultimate goal or task that we are trying to accomplish. How do your style strengths show up in the group? - My strengths are shown consistently throughout the group work but finish through taking initiative. Creating group objectives with the assistance of the other members eliminates problems within the group later on. While completing each individual objective, it makes our tasks to reaching our ultimate group goal much more effective. Also displaying discipline, which is important in regards to accomplishing the goal in a timely manner. If a member in the group seems to constantly get distracted or lose focus, I can simply remind them of the groups purpose and get them back on task. Lastly, the most important strength is responsibility. This is shown through my commitment to the my team, the task, and it’s goals. 4. What are some challenges of your style that may prevent you from being the most effective group member? - There are a few challenges that as a collaborator may prevent me from being the most effective group member, starting with the communication skills. As the collaborator I am very goal oriented and I may to tend to overlook other group members concerns when only thinking about completing the task. I may not consider a team mates opinion if it doesn’t have anything to do with our overall purpose and goal. Lastly, not recognizing how important it is for all team members to work together within a positive environment. 5. What are some behaviors of others that may prevent you from being able to fully contribute to the group? - As a group we must all equally contribute to the group, so that not only is the task accomplished but one person doing more than another.
When one person slacks off and does not do their part than another person has to do more than their fair share and that isn’t effective teamwork. Also conflicting personalities can be difficult to work with in group settings and the effectiveness of the group overall can suffer. One team member may bring negative energy to the group while another member took it upon himself or herself to play the role of the leader and boss everyone around. What systems and norms (e.g. ground rules) help you be an effective and productive contributor to a group? - As an effective and productive contributor in a group I always make sure to play the role I have been assigned and always complete my part in entirety for the assignment. I make sure that no other team member has to pick up my slack and complete what I left uncompleted. Completing each assignment on time is crucial for not only the team but also the class that the team is for. While those members that don’t will be accountable for still completing that assignment and any consequences that comes with the tardiness. Lastly, respecting the value of each member’s individual contribution and if any differences occur that they are resolved by a group decision on the matter.
Normally in a group, the work will be divided into the number of members in the group and may be arranged to each of the members to receive the part where they are more confident and have more knowledge of it. In addition, if a member is confused with their work, he can receive assistance from his teammates rather than just being alone and figure it himself independently. However, I believe sometimes been in a group can have its cons. A common pitfall associated with working as a group is disagreement about the way something is being done, a particular issue, or an opinion. Sometimes one member might have his own beliefs and want to perform a task in their way and conflict can arise from this. Once conflict arises, the members can discuss their own opinions and might arrive to a solution, but this can cause a member to not show their full potential because something was not done the way they wanted. A team player must have a tremendous personality to be successful. A tremendous personality includes being friendly, tactful, and diplomatic. A friendly personality is good to help keep the other players in harmony. It is imperative to have a friendly personality so others will not be afraid to approach the team player with a problem. Being friendly to others will directly affect the tactfulness used in talking with other people. A team player that is tactful will always have the respect of the people around him/her. When a team player has the respect of the people around him/her, it will have a positive impact on any conflict that he/she must mediate when they arise on a team. The diplomatic skills a team player possesses will help bring any disputes that other players might have with someone to a quick conclusion. This is essential in keeping the team on a successful track.
In a team-oriented setting, everyone contributes to how well the group succeeds overall. You work with fellow members of the group to complete the work that needs to be done. Having the right people in the correct roles is an important factor in measuring the success of a team, where you are united with the other members to complete the main goals. Every group is made up of definite strengths and weaknesses. Our team's 3-5 major strengths necessary to work accordingly consist of Informer, Summarizer, Orienter, Piggy-Backer, and Encourager. One of our strengths as a team is that we get input from everyone involved. Every member of our team is a leader in some way. Part of being a good leader is knowing how important it is to receive the best ideas from each member of their team. We attend group meetings where we discuss any challenges, issues, and problems. At these meetings, we often exchange ideas or brainstorm new ones with each other and come up with the best and most creative team solutions as potential answers to those perceived problems.
Firstly, the team’s poor communication. Despite Brandon being self-oriented and disruptive by not showing up for meetings and shirking his responsibilities, the team fails to confront him regarding his commitment and his duties, probably due to groupthink, they deem that Brandon would not be up to negotiate. Instead, Suhaimi takes on Brandon’s work, as he does for any other teammates’ shortcomings, without compromising. Also, Miko being silent and withdrawn during meetings might lead to misunderstandings between her and her teammates, such as Suhaimi seemingly not trusting her. Furthermore, the team’s poor communication led to differing project focuses. Overall, having poor communication would lead to misunderstandings and hinders effective teamwork.
My co-operative behavior and the agreeable behavior I exhibited contributed to the harmony and the success of the group. The co-operation that was exhibited was relative to prompt arrival to meetings, meeting group deadlines, and thorough participation in the discussions and the forums of the group. While I was indeed co-operative for most of the group sessions, I was not afraid to speak my mind. Working in teams provides an opportunity for individuals to come together and establish a rapport towards others within a group. Teamwork is classified as people with different strengths and skills who work together to achieve a common goal. When a team works well, specific objectives are fulfilled and satisfied. My explanation is every person has their personality and behavior which can impact the social relationships with others. My team player style is collaborator, which I saw come out of me when we worked in groups. This semester I had great group work experiences and some that were not as great.
When working on an assignment in a group it is best to set roles for each team member. That is a process called Group Dynamics. Each team member would have a different function in each group. One member would take the Devil’s Advocate role. That position is for a person in the group that can never agree with any of the members ideas’. It helps the group by allowing them to see what it is like having to deal and work with a difficult team member during the assignment. Another member would take the role of the Listener. Their position would be to sit back quietly, keeping their ideas to themselves and allow the other members to discuss their ideas among the group. Another role in the group is called the Idea Generator. This role is given to
