Throughout my life, I have had many situations where I was put in a group and had to interact with people that I did not know. However, these interactions have changed me as a whole. These communications also helped me discover my weaknesses and strengths. Through all of my group interactions, I have established the sense of responsibility, gained motivation and willpower, and developed a network of relationships. Joann Keyton mentions, “[t]ime both enables and constrains group members, their communications, and their work on tasks and activities (Ballard & Seibold, 2000, 2004)” (88). I don’t like to procrastinate or wait until the last minute to complete my group work because I believe if one member of the group fails to do their part, then the whole group will be unsuccessful. Determination is an essential strength in group interactions as it can improve your overall performance and also help you succeed. Another strength that I have is that I like to help my group members with their tasks. I feel that each member of the group should contribute to each other’s work in some way. This allows groups to finish their work faster and more efficiently. For instance, in most of my group works, I have advised my group members on how and what they can use to improve their task. Currently, this semester, I have been working on a business project with my group in Business Management class. There are ten tasks in total and five members, so each member has to do two tasks. Most of the tasks correlate, so I advised my group members that we can help each other by sharing the data required and doing a little part of each other’s task. Many people believe verbal communication to be a very powerful way of expressing oneself. Words gain there power when the volume is raised and lowered alternatively to make a point. Additionally, the influence of speech can manifest itself in a number of ways. It can be used to humiliate, to intimidate, to flirt and to threaten, all of which are integral and pragmatic strategies to win a power struggle.
Topics explored with this group included; conversational skills, internet safety, bullying, conflict resolution, social media, and personal appearance. Accordingly, I was able to gain insight on how to plan activities tailored to the needs of the group as well as obtain tips on conducting groups effectively. Additionally, I was able to get a sense of the group dynamics, attain knowledge on the stages of a group through observing all the individuals belonging to the group, their uniqueness and how their personality impacted the group itself. Individuals were able to join the group at different stages hence; the forming stage was repeated each time a new member was recruited. However, within the group, an individual must learn to assert their own authority and independence, or as a result of the fundamentally conforming nature of a group relationship, be forced to conform. There is a natural tendency for people to gather in groups for mutually beneficial purposes. Through groups, individuals accomplish goals and relate to others in innovative and productive ways (McClure, 1990). People would not survive, let alone thrive, without involvement in groups. This reliance and interdependence is seen in all types of groups from those that are primarily task-oriented to those that are basically therapeutic. In order to be effective, group leaders must be aware of the power and potency of groups.
During my interviews for my communication assignment I found an array of answers. Some were very direct and I knew exactly what was being said, and the rest were left up to my interpretation. I chose to ask 5 different people so that I could hit every level in my life to fully understand what my strengths are. These five people being my boss, two of my dance class girls, my co-worker/friend, and my aunt.
In order to evaluate my role within the group, it is important to identify what makes a group. A group must firstly consist of more than three members, “Two members have personal relationships; with three or more there is a change in quality” of the personal relationship. (Bion 1961, p26) The group must have a common purpose or a goal in order to succeed. Having now completed my group work task, I can look back and reflect upon the process that my group went through to get to the presentation end point.
What I learned in the group final project is that I am not the best with working with people. It is not that I do not want to work with them or that they do not want to work with me, it is that my group which consisted of Alexa, Aaron, Ashlyn, Brett, and myself, had very conflicting schedules so it was difficult trying to rearrange times so all or at least the majority of us could meet up to go over our group work. Before starting our group project “The Day in a Life of…”, we were grouped up with our fellow classmates but not on our own volition. I was not put into a group with people I knew or thought I would like.

A Theory of Group Development held for me some surprising revelations about my behavior. How I am orientated towards authority and how that may impact the way I relate to others offered me more than a few things to consider. Enumerating those revelations and where they influenced my behavior in the group during each of the phases is the focus of this paper. Obstacles to the development of valid communication is something that members bring into the group.
Hence, I can utilize my strengths and manage my weaknesses to be a better member in future group assignments. In particular, I will focus on utilizing my personality traits in moderation as either extremes of high or low on a personality may be too rigid, being an extreme strength in certain situations, but being an extreme weakness in others. Despite having a low extraversion, I can still take a more active role in future discussions by sharing all constructive ideas instead of shying out and worrying of others’ negative feedback. I will also balance between orderliness and flexibility by proposing general deadlines for our group and at the same time allowing members to organize their own progress so that we can have organization in the group without suffocating the members. With more flexibility given, I will keep in mind to be agreeable in moderation in which I will be trusting and compassionate to the members but also able to be firm if any member is slacking or not meeting our deadlines. The details listed above are just part of my personality and working style that can be improved upon which serve as general guidelines for me to contribute more to future group assignments. However, they should not be viewed as rigid rules which I will follow blindly. I will always remember that I am working with a group of people with various personality traits and I should approach each member with ways that may improve our productivity instead of treating them as the same and that a single method will suit everyone, since that would reduce the uniqueness of each
