Group dynamics can be defined as the interactions that influence the behavior and attitudes of individuals when they are in groups. This is very important in the areas of sociology, psychology, and communication studies. Several experiments and researches have been conducted that have focused on how people behave in groups. The findings have revealed that groups affect peoples’ attitudes, behavior and perceptions. Groups are essential for personal life, as well as in work life. Formation of groups or teams is not something that occurs overnight. Another important aspect in towards positive group dynamics is to make all members feel accepted in spite of any diversity. Trust is an important trait for the survival of a group. More importantly, the likelihood of accomplishing goals increases with maximum trust and confidence. However, numerous personalities with different backgrounds may cause friction while attempting to resolve conflicts or reaching a consensus. These challenging situations can lead to stress and tension amongst the group members, but when successfully resolved they lead to further strengthening of the bonds and the emergence of a more cohesive group. Also certain measures can be taken to avoid certain petty discrepancies right from the beginning. When analyzing a group and its development, there are several points to consider. The greater the similarity in member attitudes and values brought to the group, the greater the likelihood of cohesion in the group. Group cohesion will be increased by success in achieving the groups’ goals, low frequency of required external interactions and under conditions of abundant resources. Group norms are very important in order to keep a group functioning as a unit or system instead of a collection of individuals. When establishing a working group, it is vital to identify and establish its group norms. It is important to get the group to recognize their existence and influence. This can be accomplished in many different ways: by observing the behavior of group members, interviewing the group, or by having group members identify their own norms. Norms tend to guide the group. Even unknowingly, members act within the norms established. Staying within these boundaries, which become ingrained in their behavior patterns, the group becomes equipped accomplish its goals. While group norms may help a group progress towards its goal, some norms may also hinder the group from working together
My analysis is on the film The Goonies. While I view the movie and determine the various norms, behaviors, roles and interaction between group members, as well as individuals the examination within the realm of film can present many of the same components. Thus, our group selected this movie to analyze based on its formation of a cohesive problem-solving group full of unforgettable characters. The Goonies portray many different theories and aspects of small group communication.
Topics explored with this group included; conversational skills, internet safety, bullying, conflict resolution, social media, and personal appearance. Accordingly, I was able to gain insight on how to plan activities tailored to the needs of the group as well as obtain tips on conducting groups effectively. Additionally, I was able to get a sense of the group dynamics, attain knowledge on the stages of a group through observing all the individuals belonging to the group, their uniqueness and how their personality impacted the group itself. Individuals were able to join the group at different stages hence; the forming stage was repeated each time a new member was recruited. According to Toseland (1984), “Social order and stability are prerequisites for the formation and maintenance of a cohesive group” (p.78). The group culture of respect and support as well as the established roles assisted in creating the cohesive group. However, certain personality differences and dynamics can negatively impact the group culture. For example, one of the older girls demonstrated dominance over the youngest girl of the group. The younger girl was submissive and shy. During one observation, the girls processed a disagreement over a joined project. The eldest girl would not allow the younger girl to help as she felt her lack of skill would mess up the project. The younger girl’s feelings were hurt and the eldest girl was steadfast in her position. Personality differences are inevitable and likely to be seen in all group settings. The first stage of team building is called the forming stage. The team meets for the first time and learns about the opportunities and challenges, and then they agree on goals and begin to tackle tasks. Team members tend to behave quite independently. They may be motivated, but are usually relatively uninformed of the issues and objectives of the team (Wikipedia). The group has reached the Norming stage when they begin the second stage.
It is proven that teams who work well together perform and have a higher rate of success compared to teams who do not work well together or communicate with each other. A recent article with regards to leadership discussed the topic of group cohesion and how this is a factor for success. The article discussed several situations, one about a business company, one about a sports team and one about a military operation. The article closely analyzed the leaders of the three situations and discussed the similarities and differences between the three. The main similarity between was there focus on cohesion. The article contained facts about how the business was operating and how that in recent years, production and sales as increased drastically, and one factor for this increase was the CEO implemented a mandatory team building exercise each
According to Toseland and Rivas (2005), group dynamics are “the forces that result from the interactions of group members” (p. 64). These forces refer to either the negative or positive influences towards meeting members’ socioemotional needs as well as goal attainment within a group (Toseland & Rivas, 2005), like within my class work group experience. Some of dynamics that continue to emerge and develop in my group is the effective interaction patterns and strong group cohesion, which has generated positive outcomes and group achievement thus far.
Team Dynamics - Conflict Resolution Strategies People work in groups or teams every day, whether in their career, education, political organization, church, or any other social setting. Conflict while working in teams or groups is inevitable. When taking people of different backgrounds, personalities, moral and ethical beliefs, and putting them together in a group, conflict will arise. The key to achieving your team goals is to construct and conquer your goals while keeping the greater good of the team in mind. Conflict, as it arises, should be combated and abated through swift and thorough resolution techniques.

At this stage, members are comfortable with inclusion concerns and think of themselves as part of the group (Group Development Theory, 2015). Control issues start to arise immensely in this phase (Group Development Theory, 2015). When members confront their control issues, they face concerns related to their ability to influence others and to assume responsibility (Group Development Theory, 2015). Once the group enters the control phase, interaction becomes more confrontational (Group Development Theory, 2015).
People have a tendency to behave differently when they are by themselves as opposed to being in a group. Groupthink has been linked with negativity since the quality of a groups decision diminishes when a group has no structure or leadership and no real decision-making plans. Although positive groupthink occurs we tend to hear about negative instances of groupthink. My focus will be more around the negative decisions some groups tend to make. Understanding the social processes that occur within groupthink and how a group thinks of its decisions is crucial for people to know. This way it gives insight into how groupthink really works. Studies were done showing whether group size, group pride and the cohesiveness of a group mattered when it came to groupthink. In order to evaluate my role within the group it is important to identify what makes a group. A group must firstly consist of more than three members, “Two members have personal relationships; with three or more there is a change in quality” of the personal relationship. (Bion 1961, p26) The group must have a common purpose or a goal in order to succeed.
Realizing that a group can become a high performance team is important. Accomplishing this goal is invaluable, advantageous and profitable. Once able to operate from a group to the high performing team is a great step into preparation into the big business world. Leaders and members must also realize not only how to accomplish this but that some problems will and can arise from different demographic characteristics and cultural diversity. That is if one is in such a group, which the probability would be quite high.

Tuckman (1965) stated these rules/processes are needed for group formation: Formation: This is the initial phase when the group gets together and members begin to grow their relationship with one another and find out what is required of them. This is the stage when team building starts out and hope starts to build up. Group members will start setting up limits on acceptable behavior through experimentation. Other members’ reactions will decide if a behavior will be reprise. This is also the time when the tasks of the group and the members will be adjudicated. Storming:During this tier of group development, interpersonal conflicts arise and conflicts of opinion about the group and its goals will surface.If the group is unable to visibly state its purposes and goals or if it cannot agree on shared goals, the group may fail at this point. It is important to cultivate through the conflict at this time and to establish clear goals. Groups influence our everyday lives in ways that we don’t even realize. Most of what is learned from groups are societal norms that are being reinforced on a micro level in everyday life. Group influence on individuals is a clear tangible proof of societal norms by institutions. The groups we become a part of therefore can have a greater influence on our individual actions then we are aware of.
