Throughout this entire course I realized what exactly it means to be a respectable supervisor/manager, by applying techniques or how to evaluate certain situations to receive the best possible outcome. What stood out the most to me is there is always a bigger picture too look at and help you choose the reasons behind your actions. All managers have a reason for the way that they run things, coming from an enlisted point of view; I have had multiple supervisors which some had good traits and some didn’t. The good thing about that I could pick out some things I like about the good supervisors and apply it in my own way as I made my way through the ranks. What have I learned over this term that is the most useful? Honestly the entire course was
Supervisor need communication skills, fairness, negotiation skills and resolution skills to mediate conflicts. Also supervisor should be an active listener, need to understand the problem, reason for conflict correctly. Then the mediator should be unbiased. Mediating supervisor should not be a part of the issue or problem. It will help to develop the trust between two parties or individual.
The biggest lesson I learn during this class is time management. I have a 9 month old baby and he allows wants my attention. I had to rely on a family member to take care of him while I get a few hours to read the textbook and do the writing assignments. I had to truly focus on my work and not go to social sites because I barely had time to do so.
It is one thing to have the knowledge of “the practice of mobilizing people to tackle tough challenges and thrive”. What I am persistent to do with that knowledge is what is important. My biggest take away is that I need to get on the balcony. By being on the balcony I can see that is it really the bold guy with the dance moves who starts the party, not the DJ. Silly to me that I never realized that is where I needed to be, that is where people could find me in a real life party. A year from now I hope that is still where I will be, looking for new data and learning more about myself in new circumstances. There will always be more to learn, although every once in a while I will have to intervene in situations that will make me uncomfortable. To carry on improving on the skills I picked up during the course of this class, it will be crucial for me to reevaluate the goals I set for myself. I plan to reset them all and provide myself with a timeline to achieve the goals. KU offers a minor in leadership studies and this classes is the foundation for all of those leadership classes to come. This class will be impossible to forget as I move forward in complete my minor. I will be using what I have learned in this class still three years from, it is kind of
The next lesson I learned will be particularly useful when I become a manager. That lesson is to make good people want to stay in the company because it betters the company and good people help uphold important ethical standards. Also, in regards to the managerial role, is to reward ethical behavior and punish unethical behavior.
Being a course about leadership, I was able to learn several takeaways important to being a leader.
What I learn in MGT 422: Production Management this semester is some useful information that will greatly benefit in the future. There were several topics we covered this semester but there were only a selected few that caught my attention. Those four things I learned this semester that caught my attention were: the productivity theory, the slowest worker theory, the assign and on-duty approach, and the process of making a prosthetic body part.
I will use what I have learned from this book in the future by creating more urgency in myself when I know that something needs to be changed. Also, if I ever find myself in a position of leadership, I will be sure that every employee working for me understands why we need the change, supports it, and has a sense of urgency to get it done. Next, it will help me be more careful about my communication, and making sure that everything I do, verbally and nonverbally, should be showing that I am incredibly dedicated to the change that I am trying to introduce. Also, there was a time where we very briefly talked about the importance of change in a business; this book would help in those times wherein changing something proves to be difficult. If you make it appear to yourself and your employees that the change is absolutely needed, then they will all work to accomplish the
Coming into this major I had no idea what to expect and the same went for this course, but I did know that it dealt with leadership, something that I have been steeped in for a good part of my life. So with that, it was hard to really set any goals as to what I would want to improve in with my leadership style but I was able to pin point a few aspects that could use some work through learning about different leadership techniques and methods. By learning about how leaders are formed, different approaches to leading groups and various aspects effecting group dynamics, I could determine an individuals or my own strengths in leadership and the methods necessary to effectively lead various types of groups. Also by observing many others in facilitating the after school program it gave me much more of an opportunity to see what works and what does not, this is an opportunity very few leaders get without being thrust into a role that they are ill prepared for.
Personal Philosophy of Supervision Beliefs and Philosophy School administrators are important in setting the path for a successful school (Glickman, et al., 2014). The principals could play a dynamic leadership depending on how they exercise their beliefs of the organizational and social environment (McNair, 2011). The principals are the primary facilitators for developing the foundations in learning that will last, to manage the student’s performance at schools, and seeking the improvement at school that will cause great impacts in school‘s education (Gordon,1989). In the recent years in the U.S., education has change in a more cultural diversity population, it is imperative that school supervisors, are trained to encounter this cultural issues, but also assisting others with the opportunities to develop appropriate abilities to deal with different cultures (Glickman, et al., 2014). Even though this increasing awareness of the multicultural issues, many supervisors are not being trained how to deal with this issues in the daily practice.
Managerial communication and skills is the subject that needs to be legitimately comprehended and consolidated into each organization. I accept that working ordinarily for an organization might be some piece of life, however fit to deal with our work with successful correspondence and aptitude is an Art of Living. I can certainly say that this course at Sullivan had provided for me sufficient chance to consider different viewpoints that I have been taking a shot at a regular schedule at my work place. It additionally helped me enhance each part of it. It is said that take in while you take in and play while you play, then again, my work style is to play while I take in (taking in gets to be so natural) and this could be accomplished through solid crucial learning in Managerial communication and skills.
According to him, there are two skills necessary for supervision, one is leadership skills and other is managerial skills. While giving perfect examples, he has explained how one needs to go past their comfort zone to learn more to be successful alongside positive hierarchical development (Sargent, 2003).
Group Dynamics, was an eye opening experience. Diving into any group setting, has you wading with people from all different backgrounds nonetheless; there is no way of knowing how those differences will play out, unless you watch the dynamics first hand. I have seen personalities unravel and clash into one another, inevitably leaving one wounded while the other down played the exchange. Every individual views things differently; a leader should to be flexible to accommodate a variety of personalities. It 's not always easy to forgo personal biases, but necessary to bring about a positive change.
Leaders require essential leadership skills to effectively lead. The Chief Petty Officer (CPO) Academy teaches those essential skills to enhance leadership ability out in the fleet. During my time at the CPO Academy, I acquired vital knowledge and skills in leadership throughout the classes I took which I will be taking back to the unit. One class that had a significant impact was the Facilitative Leadership class which gave me the tools to effectively run a meeting. In addition, the Change Management class provided me with the skills necessary to support Command Policy and get crew buy-in. Lastly, the Stress Management class imparted me with knowledge on how to deal with stress and mitigate it.
There was a significant amount of knowledge given in this course, involving concepts that in our teaching career will be extremely important. From this course I have gained a significant amount of learning experiences. I had the pleasure learning about how the educational system has come to be what it is today and who were the important people in the creation of the public education, like Horace Mann. Watching the videos and reading the chapters required has opened my eyes more of how a teacher should respond to different situations involving a student, For example when we read the chapter on the laws that revolve around the educators and the students. I had absolutely no clue that students had rights while in school property. Another learning
Throughout this semester in my Human Services Skills and Methods class I have learned a tremendous amount about myself, the career I am choosing, and the clients that we serve. All of these qualities that I have studied throughout the semester, are going to help me become a better Social Worker, and a better person within society.
