Depending on what I am reading, I may read and annotate using stick notes, or writing in the book. When I am reading something for school I take my time and reread things that I do not understand. I read on my bed leaning against the wall with a pillow behind my back. Sometimes I have music, or nature sounds, playing in the background. When I read I try to tune out my surroundings. Since the start of this class I have started looking at topic sentences, asking myself questions about what I am reading, and I have tried to stay out of my bedroom while reading. Since I have started staying out of my bedroom while reading I find that I understand the text better and pay more attention to what I do not understand. I have also really started …show more content…
If it is academic reading you are going to need to read more carefully than reading for fun. Before you start reading for a class you should look at the title, author, bold topics in the book, and the topic sentences. You may want to look at the questions you need to answer from reading this text. Many people even outline a few questions before they ready so they know what to look for in the passage. When you start reading the text you should have a pencil to underline words you do not understand or mark things that are important. I f you cannot write in the book or on the paper you can use stick nots to make notes. If you are reading to answer questions you can flag answers using the same method. After you read say it back to yourself, or summarize what you have just read. You can answer the questions on your outline, go back and highlight the important parts of the text. It is important to have a strong vocabulary so you can understand what you are reading. The many types of vocabularies include literary, oral communication, psychology, sociology, social science, business, economic, mathematical, biological, physical science, criminal justice, and medical terms. As you take classes and learn more you need to have a strong vocabulary to keep up in
In pre-reading activates I use recall, I occasionally clarify the text for myself and I rarely analyze the visual elements. When reading actively I only highlight what is most important to me and make notes on what I am confused about. I always identify the major and key points in the text. I always pay attention to the overall progression.
...t comprehension, it is important to analyze and view all aspects of the text, this will ensure the education you’re receiving, as well as the personal ties you make while reading.
I find it easier expressing myself through words and understanding other individual 's thoughts and actions through speech and writing. By studying a piece of text I am able to retrieve a lot of relevant information from it, I find this an easy way to learn because I reflect back by making notes so I am able to look back on notes for situations such as assignments and revision for exams. This is why I find reading techniques such as skim and scan reading difficult because I need to read a piece of text, highlight the important information and make notes to ensure that I have gained a good understanding. I could possibly improve an approach for my reading by looking at step by step guides to skim and scan reading online. This could help for large amounts of reading which I have to read quickly in seminars and lectures and to draw only the important information
As a student, there are many strategies I have received that have helped me become a better reader and writer. While taking Writing Composition 1, I leaned many new tricks as a reader that helped me understand a better way to write. One way was by taking notes after every
Reading is an essential element in our everyday lives. What was the first thing that you learned in school? It was the ability to read. Exercising that ability by reading voluntarily keeps our minds active when we’re out of school. It is a supplement to our minds. The more you read, the more you know!
Writing essays was never my forte, it just never came easy to me like it would to others. Since other subjects came easy to me and I had to focus more than others on writing, I had a negative attitude toward the process as a whole. During this summer semester, I was able to grow as a writer, and gain a more positive attitude toward how I write and a better feel for writing in college. Writing a paper is a process in which there are many different stages. In high school I would never write outlines or any sort of pre planning work. Other struggles I encountered in my writing were my theses, and framing quotes.
Up until this year, before taking the class intermediate composition, I thought I was a terrible writer. I was right. Writing isn’t something that I enjoy doing, nor am I good at. Writing is difficult for me because I’m not very good at explaining things in a professional manner, that can be easily well written. While writing you are expected to make little to no mistakes, which is not something I’m great at. I am so much better at explaining things with verbal words rather than written words. I had not taken any extra writing classes before this year rather than the mandatory ones. Like I had stated before, I hate writing, with a passion. I dread writing anything, especially an essay for school, like this one. I’m
Initial Reflective Essay When I first thought of what I wanted to do with my life after college, the first thing I thought of was helping people. The next step in deciding what I wanted to do with my life was to examine how I could accomplish this goal. I started pondering and I was thinking about how much I love to take care of my body. Health care and personal hygiene has always been an important factor in my life. So I decided to major in Health Sciences.
Writing an essay often seems to be an overwhelming task for many individuals. For students like myself, who came from another country, writing can be more difficult and challenging. It can be very frustrating to fully comprehend an idea, and being unable to express it proficiently in English can be excruciating. For these reasons, assistance is often needed to become an effective writer. The focus of this paper is to demonstrate the process on how I organized and accomplished my most recent essay, and to identify the struggles I encountered when writing the paper. In addition, plans on how to improve my next paper, based on the teacher’s feedback from my previous essay, and topics including methods on how instructors can help develop my essay
Throughout this semester I have written several essays and journals using techniques both important and unfamiliar to me. This class helped me use these techniques and steps that are involved in creating and formalizing an essay. The writing process of an essay includes information gathering, creating ideas, and writing it on paper to create a cohesive and organized paper. In complete certainty I can say I lack many of the skills necessary to create such a paper, but during this course I have learned some writing methods which I believe have improved my essays. The essays and journals in this portfolio reveal both my strengths and weaknesses in my writing and how I have both continued to make the same errors and improved in other areas.

Since beginning this class I have found myself doing more research, so I can make the best paper I can. The more research and knowledge I gain about the topic, the better my papers have been. Before I started this semester I did enough to get by with my papers. This class has changed the way I go about my papers. I have been proofreading my papers more than I usually do and actually thinking deeper about my papers. By the end of this class, I would like to be confident in my literacy skills. I would like to improve in every aspect of literacy and this will make my papers much better.
At the start of this class, I made a goal to develop my writing skills to better prepare me for other courses for my degree. I knew English 106 would be different compared to any other English or college courses that I have taken. I knew English 106 environment will let me grow in diverse writing dimensions. My long serving years of experience in the military has exposed me to many cultures around the globe. In just seven weeks of the course, I have seen some improvement in my writing. This course has afforded me with several techniques that have made writing not only a little bit easier but also more in-depth resulting in a higher level of academic writing versus my normal military style writing. Now I understand the writing process and
For example, I decided to wake up early and go to Math Learning Center at 9:00 am on Tuesdays and Thursdays to study and work on my math assignments until 1:50 pm I go to my math course for three hours then go home which this choices matches decision making and maintain organizing. I made an agreement with myself to study during those days on Math Learning Center and arrange my time for other activities and courses to schedule that I am accustomed to. I have discovered useful reading skills that I can stay engage with my readings. Convenient tips I have tried out were different colors of highlighters to underline the key words or supporting phrases, annotating the article, questioning the purpose and meaning of the article more in depth, and foreshadowing current events from contact clues within the text.
