Nowadays there are many people who are going back to study, whether it be improving career possibilities or to change career paths. Therefore, people need to develop different types of study skills to help throughout their learning. In this essay I will be describing a few study skills that could be useful in the path to success during my own studies. I will also be explaining how I will be implementing them into my studies. Also, I will be identify two challenges that I may face during my studies and explaining a few steps that I will use to address them. Being motivated is an important to being successful in studying. Cottrell (2003) suggests that, you would need to have a high level of motivation to help you stay focused and find ways to help you through any problems that may occur during studying. For instance, I will be using many steps to help me implement this skill into my studies. Sometimes you will just have to use the mind frame of just do it to motivate or you may need to create a strategy to help you. A strategy that I will use to help increase my motivation is by rewarding myself for studying, for example, once I have finished the required goals for my day I can go watch an episode of my favourite show. Another strategy to help me with my studies would be to create a motivational poster. This would be a poster placed in my study area that includes positive words, quotes and pictures that will help motivate me to be successful. Finally, reminding myself of the long term goal and what I want to achieve will help with my motivation. NZTC (2015) states that stress is one of the biggest factor that can affect a student’s study this is due to the pressure of the high demand of their time. Being stressed affects you mentally, socially and physically and have many negative side effects a few of these are exhaustion, headaches, sleeplessness and loss of appetite. Stress isn’t good for your health or well-being, this is why it is important to identify any causes of stress and to have strategies that will help manage stress. Going to the doctor for advice, searching the internet and seeking help from student support are some of the strategies that can help you deal with stress. (NZTC, 2015) There are many different steps that you can use to help reduce stress the only problem is finding the right ones for you. One of those steps that I will be using, is to break down your work load into smaller tasks that are manageable and can be prioritized easily. Another of the steps could be to use physical activities to help work off stress, or I could use yoga and breathing exercises to help control stress and helps you to relax. Most importantly, I should talk to someone, whether it be a family member or a friend, I can even talk to the Student Support Team if stress is affecting your

Skills given above are what students should develop and invest during the process of studying for a degree. Obviously, these skills called transferable skills are both relevant to employment and study. 'These skills are interpersonal as well as intellectual, and include the skill to learn from experience as well as reading, the ability to manage yourself, basic skills in numeracy, literacy and IT, interpersonal group-working and communication skills in analyzing and solving problems' (Cameron, 2008:19). So whether students could gain transferable skills in the university has become a major factor of developing a career after their graduation.
Studies have shown that many college students are not able to handle the stress while in school, which hinders the ability for the brain to act in a normal way (Shahrokh and Hales, 2003). If a person is unable to deal with the stress that one is being faced with, it will have negative consequences in terms of causing several psychological disorders (Canby et al., 2014). Entering post-secondary education is a completely new environment for students, as it can be tough for many to adjust to the new surroundings. There are many factors that cause stress when students enter college, as it can include having the ability to deal with lower marks (Struthers et al., 2000) and having to create a new social life. Once and if a social life is established, it can cause more stress among students because it can lead into peer pressure that results in risky behavior. In particular, peer pressure can cause alcoholism or drug abuse (Seiffge-Krenke, 1990) or it can also cause unprotected sex. Not only does stress revolve around peer-pressure, but it can also be caused by headaches and lack of energy. If a student is constantly staying up late to finish assignments or to study, it can cause headaches from the lack of sleep; thus causing stress. To do this I will sets goals as to when my work needs to be completed and how much studying I will do each night. I seem to learn better when I constantly read over the material I am studying. This allows the material to constantly be running in my mind. I am a person who will read or hear something and it usually sticks with me. I really haven 't had to study for long periods of time, because I usually remember the topic of what were being tested on pretty easily. I have also learned that I am more of a hands on person. Everyone deals with stress at some point in his or her life. Most people deal with it daily. As defined in the book called Principles and Labs for Fitness and Wellness, stress is, “The mental, emotional, and physiological response of the body to any situation that is new, threatening, frightening, or exciting” (Hoeger & Hoeger, 2012). This stress is caused by a stressor, which is also known as “a stress-causing event” (Hoeger & Hoeger, 2012). Stressors can take all different forms, from moving to a new town, having a baby, or even writing a paper (Boyd, Wood, & Wood, 2011). One major stressor in life can be going to college. If not coped with properly, these stressors can leave a person with too much stress that could end up harming them mentally and physically, such as developing an illness (Boyd, Wood, & Wood, 2011). There are several ways to cope with stress. Some healthy ways to cope with stress would be practicing emotion-focused coping, building time-management techniques, and practicing meditation.
During this course I learned many stress management techniques. One of the first stress management techniques I learned was creating a list of things to do in order of importance. Before using this technique I left things to do all at once. This technique helped me by equaling out my work load. Another technique for stress I learned was yoga. One of the three most appropriate On Course success strategies that will be best of use to achieve success for me in years to come is discover self-motivation. Defined by Downing as, “finding purpose in their lives by discovering personally meaningful goals and dreams” (296). Being able to use this strategy will be the key to my future success. Having motivation to do all the work given to me from my classes will keep me at a good grade. Passing my classes is what I need to do to reach my goal. I cannot do this without the fuel given to me by my motivation to finish to hard work and reach my destiny. Without my motivation there will be no desire to finish and accomplish what is really important and meaningful in life, and that is not what I want. When taking notes you do not have to write down every word the teacher says, if you do that you’re not going to know what's important and what's not important. If you do that you’re going to be studying things that’s not important and that could confuse you and make studying really boring. Write down only the things that you think are important. You can even read ahead in a book and highlight what you think is good information to know. If the teacher says anything more than once, or puts emphasis on something, highlight that it could be on your next test. Good thinking skills are especially important in note taking.
