Literacy skills are essential for a person to function in the world. Every aspect of a person’s life is influenced by literacy skills. Literacy skills are the foundation for learning other skills (Literacy Link South Central, n.d.). One aspect of literacy is reading. There are several components to reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency. Then those areas are broken into skills and abilities. Some children seem to “pick-up” these skills, while others struggle. This essay will focus on what are fix-up strategies for reading comprehension, how to teach students these fix-up strategies, and why is it important to teach fix-up strategies to English Language Learners. For some readers, this process has a break down. They can either read the words and not understand what they have read, or they have difficulty reading the words. There are strategies called “fix-up strategies” that can help students when they find themselves in these situations. There are several fix-up strategies. According to Spence (2014), there are 10 fix-up strategies. 1) Re-read. Children think that if they just keep reading, they will finally understand, or no one will ever know, but that does not help with comprehension. So, encouraging students to go back and re-read to understand or clarify what they have read is important. 2) Read out loud. Sometimes hearing the words out loud helps with comprehension. 3) Use context clues. What does the pictures or other words around that word telling me? This can help with sounding out the word; does it make sense? Also, this can help when students come across multiple meaning words, or words that can be pronounced different ways. 4) Look up words you do not know. Sometimes, a person cannot figure out the word just by context clues. They might have to look up the word in the dictionary to find the meaning. 5) Ask questions. Fix-up strategies, as well as, comprehension strategies need to be explicitly taught to ELL students. ELL students need opportunities to talk about what they are reading. Students need to be paired or grouped with their English-speaking peers to get practice hearing and using the language they are reading. They also need time to think about the text and activate prior knowledge. Most likely they have experience or knowledge of the topic but do not know how to communicate that in English. These skills are not specifically fix-up strategies but once a student has strategies for comprehending what they are reading, then the fix-up strategies can be
