Completing high school acts as a hallmark into the world of responsibility and maturity that is heralded by the college life. The two stages of life though completely dependent have been known to differ and be farther apart than any one may know. In high school, almost everything is termed as mandatory and prohibited, while in college, it is strongly suggested but no one is going to chase after the student to do something. Education and library worlds stand out as a reason for discussion. This then affected the reading habits that students have when in high school and how they slowly evolve as they get into college.
Most students in their high school years of around fifteen to seventeen account for the highest percentage of library users as compared to college students. However, teens are faced with reading attitudes that eventually affect their overall response to reading. College life on the other hand is more of a freedom-based society that allows the students to choose the reading time and frequency. It is however also a challenge since this life involves a lot more than just reading, but a struggle to balance what one has on their plate.
The first difference between the two reading habits is the reason that the two groups read. High school students mostly read because it is a requirement; they have to complete an assignment, or they have to do research as required by their teachers. In high school, all that is required is that one does what they are supposed to do and they will keep up as an average student. In college however, there is abundant freedom to do as pertains to one. The aspect of responsibility is then reflected through reading habits that the college students acquire.

It is clear that students in high school and college have different reading habits. Their surrounding mainly influences this nature, which then affects their attitudes, and reading culture. Reading has also been evolving from books to e-books and audio that people are embracing and trying to keep the reading culture alive. College life may present several challenges to keep the habit alive, but it is all about time management and finding time to grow that sphere of one’s life. High school students on the other hand, have the time plus a lot of pressure that is not only from teachers, but also emotional based on the adolescence during those years. Both students in college and in high school need to know the importance of developing a reading culture and try to maintain one.
