In pre-reading activates I use recall, I occasionally clarify the text for myself and I rarely analyze the visual elements. When reading actively I only highlight what is most important to me and make notes on what I am confused about. I always identify the major and key points in the text. I always pay attention to the overall progression.
In my ERWC class in high school mainly read nonfiction and wrote analytical summary’s, alone with expository essays. In this class, we constantly annotated the text. Outside the classroom I read a few fiction books like The Pretties series and Peak. Throughout high school my teachers have always told me that I have a unique way of writing, but I need to work on my spelling and grammar. I love writing because I like being able to my voice out there. I don’t like analytical essays because it’s just a summary of the facts. I don’t like reading when it’s just facts or history unless is a topic I am interested in. I love reading fiction and Si-Fi books.

I think it will be easier to get help from my professor than in high school. The professor seems to want to help us, as opposed to high school it felt impossible to get help or even talk to most teachers. Of course, there was at least one teacher that was willing to help. I will definitely need to spend more time studying. In high school I had 6 to 7 classes a day and in college you can build you on schedule and don’t have to be in class all day witch will take a little time to get use to. Also since I live in the dorms so I don’t go home to my family every night witch has its pros and cons, and is way different. In college it will be on us, the students to get to class on time and get all our work done, our professors will not be constantly checking in on us, like the teachers did in high school. It is on us to go to office ours if we need extra
To understand the reading one, have to understand and be able to identify the themes emphasized in the book. One of the main
Learning to read and write are both considered to be fundamental human skills, that we begin to learn from the day we start school. As time advances, as do our minds, and we are expected to evolve in our reading and writing skills. Finishing high school is a large milestone for the lives of young adults; however, there is so much to learn in order to reach the next big milestone. To be a writer in college can challenge our preconceived thoughts on how we write. Although some skills remain unchanged, high school graduates are faced with overcoming new ways of doing a skill that seems so simple that it is practically innate. The definition of writing skills for college students is much different than high school. However, considering we have come so far it is time to go over the information we already know and challenge ourselves with ideas that we are yet to learn more about.

It’s easier for students to develop a relationship with a high school teacher rather than a college professor since they are liable for far less students. Most high school teachers put together a lesson plan, lecture it and expect their students to recall it properly when a test is given. For the most part, a student is able to approach the teacher and address his or her concerns, unlike a typical college professor. Teachers of the high school level are teaching for one reason and one reason only, to prepare you for both college and life. They are willing to put forth their best effort while assisting you because they know your future depends on the quality of education in which you received. There has been multiple instances in which I had questions regarding either an assignment or project, so I went to the designated teacher. Nine times out of ten the given teacher will assist you and answer your questions to the best of their abilities. When teachers took time out of there day to assist me time and time again, it made me realize that help is available, you just have to be willing to receive it. Assignments and projects always went smoothly for me because teachers always clarified information if it needed clarification. If a student wants to have a relationship with a teacher, they need to commit and go after it! Many high school teachers are willing to make your lives
I find it easier expressing myself through words and understanding other individual 's thoughts and actions through speech and writing. By studying a piece of text I am able to retrieve a lot of relevant information from it, I find this an easy way to learn because I reflect back by making notes so I am able to look back on notes for situations such as assignments and revision for exams. This is why I find reading techniques such as skim and scan reading difficult because I need to read a piece of text, highlight the important information and make notes to ensure that I have gained a good understanding. I could possibly improve an approach for my reading by looking at step by step guides to skim and scan reading online. This could help for large amounts of reading which I have to read quickly in seminars and lectures and to draw only the important information
I have studied English since I was a grade seven, but the curriculum in my middle school and high school years, mainly focuses on reading and speaking components of language skills, with a little focus on writing. As a result, I never felt confident with any piece that I was asked to write. Writing has been a hurdle for me to succeed in college since most of the courses in college requires one or the other way writing skill. Consequently, I have decided to work on my writing skills, and have started working on it; even before, I started taking this English 101 class. I used to use a various educational material which I thought might help me to meet my writing goal. Some of the materials which I was using includes: TOEFL educational materials, You Tube resources, and various novels. All of these resources have helped me to polish my writing skills. Furthermore, after I started taking this class, I have learned to enjoy writing. I have made it a point to communicate my own thoughts and feelings as opposed to simply summarize the thoughts of famous writers and authors before me. This class builds up my confidence in my own writing and for that I am highly appreciative.
Now your education is not free and can become a hassle when paying for tuition. Loans, scholarships and your own money become the decisions for paying for your tuition. The teaching in your classrooms are longer and less frequent, the professors cannot stop their lecture and individually help you out. You have to take full responsibility of your own assignments. Making sure that you turn in your work when you are supposed because the professor will not reminding you. Your environment is much larger than a regular high school classroom. Responsibility, hard work, self-discipline, note-taking skills, test-taking, and time-management skills will need to be a key characteristic needed in
I started the semester not knowing how I would adjust going from a high school writing class to a college level writing class. I felt my writing was above average, but writing was never one of my strong suits. I had no way of knowing if my writing competency could hold up to college academic standards. I took expository writing with Professor James Brady. Over the course of the semester, multiple learning objectives were learned through my essays. These learning objectives were subject matter knowledge, writing process knowledge, rhetorical knowledge, genre knowledge, and meta-cognition.
English is an important and required course to take in any level of education. In the past, we all have taken various English courses that have helped us enhance our reading and writing skills. Over the couple of years I have been here at the University of Cincinnati, I have taken English composition classes, which have helped me evolve as a writer. However, after taking this course, my reading and writer skills have enhanced tremendously. With the goals and outcomes set for the class, that allowed students to gain an indication of the level of reading and writing skills will be accomplished. The outcomes entailed knowledge in critical thinking, rhetoric analysis, conventions, electronic environments, and cognitive analysis. In order to determine
First off, the college life has changed me for the better. I am much more responsible in many different ways. I had to change my study habits, or should I say I have to get study habits. I high school I never studied, because everything came so easy to me and I could just do the work and end up with passing grades. When I reached college I tried to do the same thing and it didn’t work. I had to start studying on a daily basis and it was hard to go from not doing any work to studying every night and on the weekends, I wasn’t use to that, but I had to make it a habit or I was not going to make it. Going to school everyday was not a problem because my parents made me go everyday, my major change was my study habits.
Writing is an important part of everyone’s life, whether we use it in school, in the workplace, as a hobby or in personal communication. It is important to have this skill because it helps us as writers to express feelings and thoughts to other people in a reasonably permanent form. Formal writing forms like essays, research papers, and articles stimulates critically thinking. This helps the writer to learn how to interpret the world around him/her in a meaningful way. In college, professors motivate students to write in a formal, coherent manner, without losing their own voice in the process. Improving your writing skills is important, in every English class that’s the main teaching point; to help students improve their writing skills. Throughout my college experience I have acknowledge that
High school, along with college are two major stepping stones in a person’s life. Many individuals are able to make the transitions from high school to college pretty easily, while there are others that find the transition into college to be somewhat challenging and hard to adjust to. When I made the jump from high school to college, I found that there are vast differences between the two, and both had very diverse environments. I found the key differences concerning high school and college to be the level of academic responsibilities, time management and scheduling, as well as the methods learning to be the main differences.
Another area that high school and college contrast in is my attentiveness during classes. In high school, the instructors were strict about different classroom policies, mainly the cell phone one. It was prohibited for students to have phones in class due to all the distractions it may cause. I would text in class and drift from the lesson. In College, even though it’s more laid back it requires more attentiveness. I try not to text from time to time. I understand now that this may take part in the down fall of my grades. Eventually, being more attentive during class, and remaining consist with the “study time” days will help improve my grades for the most part.
Overall, there are many similarities with High school and College, as well as many differences. The two main things that we can take away from these comparisons is that the workload is going to increase from High School to College. The second it that the social aspect in college will not be any different than meeting someone new in any other circumstance. Lastly if students can control their time management as they reach higher education, the adjustment will be exciting,
