Reflection Paper #2 As a senior in high school I was an officer of National Honor Society along with three other people. I remember engaging in a variety of activities such as decorating the school, logging volunteer hours that members would submit, and brainstorming fundraising ideas in committees with my classmates. With our more than two hundred members we were able to accomplish quite a lot, but often my fellow officers and I would be scrambling around trying to run the large organization. We would often butt heads and sometimes operations would get overlooked. What I have come to realize is that we each did not have a clear leadership purpose. I now know that in order to effectively lead an organization one must have a central set of values through which they lead the group. This makes an organization more efficient, timely, and effective. Through my experience at the United States Naval Academy I have have shaped my leadership purpose to be: to facilitate an environment of respect, trust, and grit. If he is anything like I was then he probably believes that resilience is pushing through tough times. However, I want to help him realize that resilience is actually about giving yourself enough time to rest and relax. I feel that this realization will help him to understand that it is okay to take a break every now and then to remain strong. I will do my best to teach him methods that I use to relax when I am stressed. For example, I shine my shoes or go for a run when I am stuck on something that is frustrating me. Furthermore, It is imperative that I do not become a source of stress in his life. Even though I will maintain a professional relationship with my plebe I will try to make it more informal, so that he can relax and not worry about formalities. The way a leader is defined and remembered is not only through his actions and accolades, his followers and the leaders he developed also go into a leader’s legacy. Much like a legendary football coach, whose coaching tree goes on to do great things, I desire to join an organization that not only assist in my development as a leader, but also facilitate in the development of others as well. How could I contribute to the development of leaders? My largest contribution will come from my experience of being the United States military, where I was not only trained how to become an efficient leader, I was also taught on how to facilitate the growth and development of others leaders as well. I am able to accurately assess and evaluate strengths and weaknesses of an individual and assist in the development of a plan of action to address these areas. One of my personal beliefs is that vast knowledge is useless unless it is passed down to someone. With that being said I take every opportunity possible to share any knowledge that has helped me along the way.
The National Honors Society is based off of four pillars: Scholarship, Leadership, Character and Service. These are all characteristics a member of the National Honor Society should exhibit. I believe that I possess all of these characteristics and should be given the chance of becoming a NHS member. This has also been a goal of mine since freshman year and would mean a lot to me to be apart of such a prestigious organization.
I’m so happy to be given the opportunity to join National Junior Honor Society(NJHS). I would love to be a member. I think it is important for kids to be involved in the community. Also, myself personally it would be an honor to be a face for our school.
I am writing to inform you of my possible contributions to the National Honor Society and my interest in becoming a member. I view myself as a strong minded individual with a strong incentive to learn. Acquiring the ability to learn fast and adapt quickly has enabled me to be a part of a wide range of organizations. My participation and loyalty to the NHS could result in a great strive forward. I could provide more ideas of services to benefit the school and our community. I would also devote a large portion of my free time to the organization and assist in any way possible. Whether that means coming in early in the morning or staying late after school, I would do any means necessary to show my commitment.
I would be an excellent choice to be a member of the National Junior Honor Society because I show service, leadership, character, and citizenship. It is an amazing opportunity anyone is lucky to have, and I am more than happy to accept it. I love helping people, being able to feel accomplished knowing I put a smile on someone’s face. Being in the National Junior Honor Society, I’d love to share my ideas and thoughts on how to make the world a better place.
Being proud of something can have many different meanings to people, but to me, it means to be honored and to be glad that something happened. I am proud about many things in my life but one thing I am extremely proud of is my induction into the NJHS. NJHS stands for National Junior Honor Society.

Being chosen for National Honor Society is a great honor, as it has proved that from my childhood till now my hard work has paid off. From the beginning of high school, as a freshman to now a junior, I have always pushed myself to do better, but not better than others, better than myself. I had competition with myself and my past grades, as I emboldened myself to do better than each of my past marking period grades. As a student at Northvale Public School, I have grown up with my older siblings being inducted into an organization called the National Junior Honor Society. I had seen all the hard work and dedication they put into their school work and activities just to get into this society, making me want to be just like them. Then a few weeks ago, I found a note on my desk in homeroom telling me that I had been nominated to be apart of this society. Through citizenship and character, leadership, and service, I intend on being inducted into the society I have heard so much about. Though it will take a lot of effort this school year, being a part of this society is a dream of mine that I will make sure to come true.

The National Honor Society is a very prestigious organization that I would love to be a part of. It was an honor to be nominated as a candidate. I am currently a sophomore in high school, and I have always wanted to be a member of the National Honor Society. As I look back over the years and think of the times I have attended the ceremonies and saw all the awards the members received, I recall saying to myself “That’s going to be me one day.”. I asked my teachers about all the requirements that had to be met to be a National Honor Society member and I made it my main goal to meet each and every one.
To inspire and influence others, a leader must possess many skills and abilities. As motivational speaker Peter Northouse, states, “a leader should be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant” (Northouse, 2013) Moving an entire group of individuals toward a singular goal is a considerable undertaking. Without effective communication skills and a clear vision of what needs to be accomplished, one will feel like they are trying to herd cats rather than leading.

As an officer in the United States Army, it has been imperative for me to understand every facet of leadership and why it remains important to be an effective leader. During this course, I have learned some valuable lessons about myself as a leader and how I can improve on my leadership ability in the future. The journal entries along with the understanding of available leadership theories have been an integral part of my learning during this course. For all of the journals and assessments that I completed, I feel it has given me a good understanding of my current leadership status and my future potential as a leader. All of the specific assessments looked at several areas in regards to leadership; these assessments covered several separate focus areas and identified my overall strengths and weaknesses as a leader. Over the course of this paper I will briefly discuss each one of these assessments and journal entries as they pertained to me and my leadership.
During my observation of the most effective leaders, began leading with “The Why” of the inner ring from the Golden Circle. By starting with “The Why” from the inner ring, the leader is able to express what he or she genuinely believes, in that each member has an important role in the overall scheme of the unit and that each member is interdependent with another member. Thus, motivating and inspiring individuals in taking ownership of their role and believing their role will provide success to the overall unit. I had a Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) commander that was able to foster, purpose and belief of each individual within the MEU. I was in a program called Servant and Leadership Training; nicknamed as SALT or Slave and Labour Training. The nickname halfway sums up the program. Everyday we woke while the campers were sleeping, served when they woke, cleaned when they left, and learned when they were gone. We learned things such as how the Bible and Science are like Hamlet and revenge, and that to become a leader you must first set yourself apart for the masses. This idea is expressed by the brilliant businessman Ray Kroc. Ray Kroc once said, “The quality of a leader is reflected in the standards they set for themselves”. This quote moved me to stay on task every day and to strive to do my best. My mindset encouraged my team to push past the unrelenting sandman that reminded us of our exhaustion, to overlook our aching muscles, and to see every smiling face as a success. I soon become the one that our counselors looked to for leadership. I was able to control our team in a way that they couldn’t. My ability to lead led me to run a store while I was there. I assigned my team members jobs, took care of issues, and open and closed for my boss. All of this taught me the importance of being a fair and stern leader; as well as contributing to my personal development.
