Reflection Paper #2 As a senior in high school I was an officer of National Honor Society along with three other people. I remember engaging in a variety of activities such as decorating the school, logging volunteer hours that members would submit, and brainstorming fundraising ideas in committees with my classmates. With our more than two hundred members we were able to accomplish quite a lot, but often my fellow officers and I would be scrambling around trying to run the large organization. We would often butt heads and sometimes operations would get overlooked. What I have come to realize is that we each did not have a clear leadership purpose. I now know that in order to effectively lead an organization one must have a central set of values through which they lead the group. This makes an organization more efficient, timely, and effective. Through my experience at the United States Naval Academy I have have shaped my leadership purpose to be: to facilitate an environment of respect, trust, and grit. If he is anything like I was then he probably believes that resilience is pushing through tough times. However, I want to help him realize that resilience is actually about giving yourself enough time to rest and relax. I feel that this realization will help him to understand that it is okay to take a break every now and then to remain strong. I will do my best to teach him methods that I use to relax when I am stressed. For example, I shine my shoes or go for a run when I am stuck on something that is frustrating me. Furthermore, It is imperative that I do not become a source of stress in his life. Even though I will maintain a professional relationship with my plebe I will try to make it more informal, so that he can relax and not worry about formalities.
