The Peer Counselor class of this quarter helped me in developing the valuable skills and abilities as the peer counselor. I have learned many things that have enhanced my knowledge. I think now as a peer, I could support is effective for increasing the knowledge, skills, communication and different other kinds of the professional skills. Before starting this quarter, I was familiar with my skill of being a not good listener to my friends and family even though I used to attend different classes and lectures, I would focus on something different. I will focus more in the skills such as listening and eye contact. I believe that the more I will be better at these skills, more I would be helpful to others. The listening skills would help me to understand the problems and find the most appropriate way to solve them. So, in order to improve my listening skills, I will make sure that I follow the peer advice and always keep an eye contact with every person I am communicating, specially while listening to them. On the other hand, I will work more and more on my listening skills to polish them and to use them effectively, when required. I am really thankful to this quarter for teaching me the best parts of becoming a peer counselor, and by having a good eye contact, I would be able to make my freinds feel satisfied about the solution of their problems. With my ability of problem solving, I would be able to solve the significant problems without even sharing the personal experiences and personal information. Finally, I enjoyed the time of peer counseling classes and I get the opportunity to learn different new things and abilities about the peer counseling and about different professional activities. The one skill that I used more of was empathy; I wanted the client to know that I understood her situation as well her feelings. At the end of our conversation, I summarized everything that we talked about, especially her want to open up to her parents and express herself to them. She mentioned that she wants them to fell empathy towards her, because the lack of parental empathy that she felt when she was younger, has even affected her in her adult life (Kilpatrick,2005).

I cannot recall a more rewarding experience than helping facilitate a child’s education while enabling parent participation alike. I know as I further my education in the counseling field my philosophy of counseling will change. For myself, I feel that I am still young and learning about myself and my surroundings. As a counselor, the therapeutic relationship should be the main focus. It can be suggested that the most effective therapy begins with a warm and genuine relationship between the client and counselor. The school counselors meet the needs of student in three basic domains: academic development, career development, and personal/social development. The knowledge, understanding, and skill in these domains are developed through classroom instruction, assessments, consultation, counseling, coordination, and collaboration. For example, in assessment, school counselors may use a variety of personality and vocational assessment methods to help students explore vocation needs and interests. The classroom guidance lessons are designed to be preventive and include self-management and self-monitoring skills. The responsive services component of the school counselor's role provides individual and/or small group counseling for students. For example, if a student's behavior is interfering with his or her achievement, the counselor will observe that student in a class; provide consultation to teachers and other personnel to develop (with the student) a plan to address the behavioral issues, and then work together to implement the plan. They also help by providing consultation services to family members.
Another skill that needs improvement is my use of active listening. Every client and every situation is different, and even though we practiced our skills in a conference room with other students and I found it difficult to concentrate, there may be times as a social worker when I may be in a noisy atmosphere and I have to practice tuning out background noise in order to hear what my client is disclosing.
The counseling session began with the introductions where I introduced myself as the counselor and later introduced my client. This stage is important in any counseling session since it is the time of exploration and focusing according to Gerard Egan as quoted by Wright (1998) in his essay on couselling skills. It is in this session that I was able to establish rapport and trust with my client in order to come up with a working and fruitful relationship with him. During this stage I made use of skills like questioning, where I would pose a question directly to my client, sometimes I would choose to just listen to what the client wanted to speak out while in some instances I would be forced to paraphrase the question if I felt the client did not understand the question I had asked previously. There were also other times when I would reflect through silence. During such a period, I got time to study the client and the information he had given. This being a difficult area, since some clients may not be able to volunteer information to you as the counselor, I decided to assure the client of confidentiality of any information he was willing to share with me with a few exceptions which I also told him about. Being open to him about the only times the information may not be confidential was part of my building rapport and establishing trust with him. I therefore, decided to ask the client what information he wanted to share with me and lucky enough he was ready to speak to me about different issues that he was going through.
In turn, having competent communicative abilities contributes to progression and maturation in many aspects of life, with education and employment being majorly affected facets. Upon entering this course this semester, I was unaware of my lack of important communication skills interpersonally, intrapersonally, and interprofessionally. Throughout my semester in this course, I have explored many different styles and skills used in communication. I have been able to recognize my strengths and weaknesses, and I have also been able to make noticeable and satisfying incremental improvements to enhance my communication. In this paper I will reflect on the knowledge I have gained throughout this semester that has allowed me to better my communication skills; I will do this by providing examples from my life. Furthermore, I will explore how I can continue to develop my commination skills in the future.
This course opened my eyes to the importance of dialogue in ways that I had not previously considered. I did not know in counseling you should only talk 30 percent of the time and that the remaining 70 percent should be the counselee’s time to talk. My typical counseling sessions in the past were about 50/50 dialogue. I thought that the counselee needed my opinion. A majority of my sessions included this amount of dialogue, which I am now understanding was not helpful to those people. Even though several people did have great results due to our sessions, they will looked to me in the future for more answers to various problems.
