The Philosophy of Education As a school counselor, my mission is to help students learn about themselves and develop in three areas; personal/social, education, and career. I believe that every student has a gift that was given by God and my goal is to help students identify those gifts and purse those gifts to become successful students and citizens. The Purpose of Counseling The purpose of guidance counseling is to help students achieve happiness and success within their social and educational context. For young children this involves adaptation to the educational environment, and addressing any social or family problems that may interfere with the child's psychological health. For older children choice of career based on interest and ability takes precedence, although serious problems such as alcohol or drug abuse, sexual abuse or domestic violence situations, bullying and other situations that lead to severe stress are also addressed. The successful school counselor is one who takes the role of a loving parent, concerned and empathetic, able to listen and win the trust of students and with the time and self-confidence to make a difference in their lives. What Should be Taught The school counselors implement a comprehensive school counseling program that promotes and enhances student achievement through a guidance curriculum, individual planning strategies, responsive services, and comprehensive school counseling program support and advocacy. The comprehensive school counseling program should meet the needs of all the students. The Role of the Counselor The school counselors meet the needs of student in three basic domains: academic development, career development, and personal/social development. The knowledge, understanding, and skill in these domains are developed through classroom instruction, assessments, consultation, counseling, coordination, and collaboration. For example, in assessment, school counselors may use a variety of personality and vocational assessment methods to help students explore vocation needs and interests. The classroom guidance lessons are designed to be preventive and include self-management and self-monitoring skills. The responsive services component of the school counselor's role provides individual and/or small group counseling for students. For example, if a student's behavior is interfering with his or her achievement, the counselor will observe that student in a class; provide consultation to teachers and other personnel to develop (with the student) a plan to address the behavioral issues, and then work together to implement the plan. They also help by providing consultation services to family members.

Deciding to become a Student Guidance Counselor was not a fly by night decision. I did a great deal of reading and research before making a decision. I knew once I started a graduate program in School Guidance Counseling, it would be both challenging and a commitment until the end. I am somewhat nervous about this new journey that I am about to partake; however, I am ready to accept the challenge and make the commitment. I am a newly licensed teacher and there will be areas and terminology which I am not familiar. But, what I have found out thus far is that a teacher and a student counselor have quite a few things in common. I received the pleasure of interviewing two school counselors, Mrs. Jean Harmon and Mr. Devon Herrick. I was excited about interviewing school counselors within the Chicago land area. Despite many negativities spoken about the Chicago Public School (CPS) system, I desire to work within CPS. I’ve heard many pros and cons of working at a selective enrollment school, compared to a public charter school. By interviewing these two individuals, I assumed that I would get a snapshot of a potential work day for a school counselor. Mrs. Harmon is a school counselor at King College Preparatory high school. Mr. Herrick is a personal counselor at Urban Prep Charter Academy- Bronzeville campus. It was interesting in learning about the daily responsibilities,
Counselors are open-minded and do not pass judgment verbally or physically at anytime while assisting students. Prejudging minimizes responses from distressed or problematic students. Giving advice and assistance should not be based on counselors’ personal opinion. Good counselors will refrain from bias and therefore communicate effective skills to empower students. Consultation and collaboration is used in working with others in the school. Community, and family to promote student personal-social, career, and academic development. One instance, would be through referrals to counseling or tutoring services that are given outside of the school, which is typically done when the counseling services is outside of the School Counselor’s scope in terms of typical and/or length of counseling services. The student’s information, assuming permission is given to share, will be shared with the community counselor and possibly progress information will be shared in return so that both parties can assist the student the best way possible. I cannot recall a more rewarding experience than helping facilitate a child’s education while enabling parent participation alike. These experiences have drawn me to my current position as an Educational Assistant where I am constantly interacting and establishing relationships with students, learning about their goals and aspirations. It is that same desire to empower our future students that has steered me towards a career as a school counselor. School counselors must recognize that there are certain ethical codes they cannot depart from. Practicing within the boundaries of their professionalism, education, training, and supervision, will enable counselors to be accurate in their practices. ACA’s ethical code C.2.a., Herlihy & Corey (2015), p. 68, explains how counselors need to keep their boundaries of competence. A clear example of this practice is shown as follows.

As a school counselor, it is important to be knowledgeable about children and adolescents developmental level in order to choose the appropriate intervention. Vernon (2009) mentions in the text that "counselors must also consider developmental factors in conceptualizing problems, in designing or selecting age-appropriate assessment instruments, and in developing interventions that take into account the child's developmental capabilities" (p. 5). The effect that the developmental levels have on the choice of internvention is that it depends on children and adolescents situtation in terms of physical, cognitive, social and emotional factors. Student Support Services provide many different services where they communicate with their students face to face or by technological communication. Counselors’ help students develop course schedules, future scheduling, and make sure their general education classes are complete. The counselors help students with different issues, support in setting realistic goals, and advising on personal issues. The participants also receive free academic tutoring for general education classes.

School counsellors are an integral part of today’s educational system. In Malaysia, we can find counsellors all over in primary school, secondary school, college and even university. As a school counsellor, they need to work with the school management in planning and implementing a school-wide counselling system. Besides, they need to provide some services like case consultations to school and parents, counselling intervention to at- risk students and deal with counselling- related issues. According to Derrick Meador, an at-risk student can be defined as a student who struggles in an area or several areas. Those struggles often have an adverse affect on the student's performance at school. School counsellors will also need to identify, analyze and conduct specialised group guidance programmes for at- risk students to foster their proper emotional, social, academic and career development.
Guidance and Counseling is an integral part of a school. Through Guidance and Counseling, the needs of the students may be addressed. Guidance Program is used to see the skeleton and the foundation of the whole Guidance and Counseling Services.
