Autocratic style is a management style that takes a task-only focus and tends to make most of the decisions for the department without including the team as part of the decision-making. A commanding leadership style demands immediate compliance from the team. I recently transferred to a new department at my current job. I quickly noticed that my new manager has a “do as I say” mentality. Mind you, this is her first management position. I completely understand a person must start somewhere to gain experience, however, it is important for a new manager who has never held a management position before to not have such a negative mentality. My manager does not know how to successfully lead and manage the department.
I work in accounts receivable for a healthcare company. The job entail posting received payments to patient accounts as well as industrial accounts. We work alongside Accounting to ensure that all general legers balance during month end. The department had about 15 people; however, once my manager came along, she decided to split the department into two teams. This left only 5 people to do the payment posting. This became a huge problem because there were a total of 30 hospitals which we post payments for and 5 people would not be able to post every payment to each hospital effectively. My style of leadership according to the quiz by Cherry (n.d.) is participative leadership which is a type of leadership that engages the members of the team to participate in decision making and problem solving while the leader makes the final judgment in the deliberation process. This style of leadership allows members who are experts in their fields provide input to reach a more effective and accurate decision. This fits exactly into my leadership style. I always believed that in every aspect there is a greater or lesser person than you are, so, why not focus on the best in others and tap on their expertise in knowledge or skill to get the best results.

I was involved in a situation where leadership was ineffective by my director of obstetrics. The topic involved our hiring policy. We had multiple candidates for a nursing position. Due to staffing shortages, this position need filled as soon as possible. My role was assistant nurse manager on night shift. It was myself, the other night shift assistant manager, and our director present for the interview. We had a candidate apply that had a few years of post partum experience, and I worked with her in the past at another facility, though did not recommend her. I kept my opinion quiet, because I always want to be fair. The interview started and was not going well. The candidate did not answer questions well, nor did she look at us in the eyes. She was dressed sloppy and did not possess any professionalism. Towards the end of the interview, the director started to ask when she could start, the compensation, and continued to give her a tour of the unit. The other assistant manager and I could not believe what we were seeing. The director hired her on the spot. This leadership was ineffective in a variety of different ways.

However, a transactional leader focuses on management tasks, and will not identify shared values of a team. By contrast, transformational leaders inspire others with their vision and work together with their team to identify common values (Marquis and Huston 2009). The transactional approach is task-orientated and can be effective when meeting deadlines, or in emergencies such as when dealing with a cardiac arrest. This research has asked us to look into three different styles of management and find real life examples of companies or individuals who have or are currently using such styles of management. To begin we will take a look into the use of an autocratic style of management versus a participative. In this portion we will look into Leona Helmsley and her chain of hotels. Once this potion is completed, our next section will be looking into a centralized style of management versus a decentralized style. In this section of the research, we will be looking into Apple Inc and how they have built an empire with a centralized style of managing philosophy. Finally, in the final section of the research we will be taking a look at how Google has created an informal environment in which employees have direct access to executives and have the ability to share thoughts and ideas that are taken serious and to the heart.
