Introduction
The purpose of this report is to discuss the overall internship experience. Topics I will be covering are the four task areas that were checked off by my supervisor on the internship agreement forms. Those task areas were: Estimating, Safety, Project Administration and Management, and Field Layout and Surveying. Also, I will discuss different activities, experiences and lessons I learned throughout the whole internship.
Internship Orientation and Preparation
There was not much to the orientation process for myself. Kimball Construction Services, Inc. is a small company so not much was required. Orientation entailed having the office secretary make photo copies of my drivers’ license, meeting everyone that works for the company, and then giving me a binder to read with company policies and procedures. Within the binder also contained a safety section that I was told to be very familiar with because safety is very important. After that my supervisor drove me around for the day and showed me where some of the places are that I would be visiting frequently and introduced me to some of the people that work there. My supervisor did most of the dealing with contracts. Other than learning that building management/owner will draft it and we sign it and deliver it to them. I did end up going and delivering a couple of contracts for my supervisor though. Risk management starts in the contract stage and continues throughout the rest of the project. Ethical issues exist everywhere you look in the construction industry. One of the most common issues is bid shopping. Another issue that exists is companies following what the contract says. Along with that there is the issue of the contract language. There are times when the language of the contract can be interpreted in multiple ways. The General Contractor can interpret it in one way and management can interpret it in another
However, before a hired employee enrolls in a training program, they must go through orientation. Orientation provides new employees with the information they will need to succeed in a company (Woods 163). Orientation helps reduces the stress of beginning a new job, gives an overview of the business, and provides the employees with the expectations within the workplace. After orientation, the employee will begin training. Training is specialized to the position that the new employee is about to enter. Training should encompass the knowledge and skills that one should know to be able to complete the day-to-day tasks. For a training program to be successful, it should include the following
A big part of nursing is reflection. Now that my sophomore year is nearly over, I can see how much I have grown and how much knowledge I received. Throughout this semester I have been faced with many thrilling experiences and frightening experiences. I have learned a lot through my gerontology clinical, pharmacology and fundamentals courses. Now that I am in clinical it seems that everything is coming together. Practicing in fundamentals and then practice on a real person has been very beneficial. Once I have performed a skill and tested out I’ve notice I am likely to remember how to do the skill again in practice. In this paper I am going to review some of the main objectives I felt were beneficial to me and will always be an important part of nursing practice.
My internship is at Moro Performance (MP) in Mequon, Wisconsin. Moro Performance is a cross fit/high performance sports gym. They train some athletes from Concordia University Wisconsin and are looking to get into training for local high school athletes. They have several classes you can take, boot camp and cross fit. Boot camp is the class they require new members to take in order to prove they know what they are doing enough to do cross fit. The cross fit class goes all out on all the work outs for the cross fit games. Moro Performance has a very young history, they opened in June of 2015 and are gaining clients at a decent rate. Anthony Moro and Lisa Wishmann are co-owners and personal trainers. They are also the only two full time employees as of right now. I work mainly under Anthony on planning events and marketing in the area.
This reflection paper is divided into five main sections. The first section gives a general introduction of internship that I was doing during my internship period. The second section provides an overview of the internship practice and tasks that I was assigned to do. The third section is about the office technologies I used during the internship. The fourth section is about the benefits of the RCBC Paralegal Program courses taken as applied to the work that I performed. The final section is devoted to the knowledge and experience that I gained during the course of internship.
The internship will include orientation on the function and will focus primarily on learning and developing new skills. This will help in the deeper understanding of concept through hands on application of the knowledge learned during the internship.
The REU program will culminate with an oral or poster presentation of each intern’s research results at the 13th annual Northeast Ohio
Before the internship, I thought judges were of course humans, but I was hoping they were nice. I thought it was going to be a bit intimidating, but I knew I looked up and aspired their profession. It was like the day I was going to meet my judge I was so nervous, yet I looked forward to it. I remember I was surprised different Judges would run their courtrooms differently. I thought they would kind of have a similar system for things, which they sort of do, but not completely. Generally speaking, the Judges are great individuals and are very unique. Most of the Judges have lived pretty interesting lives and seem to enjoy their jobs. The Judges seem to be very knowledgeable, and very considerate of the Jury, court reporters, and their clerks. The judges of course seem neutral when in front of the jury as expected. For example, Judge Lippitt, does not allow anytime to speak over each other in her court room she is always saying that they have to be respectful there is a human being recording this, referring to the court reporter. Then, she is very considerate of the Jury and their time, she will tell them the trial is longer at times to make them happy if it ends early. Further, Judge Lippitt really cares about the jury instructions and that they are as neutral as possible. Something I have learned from Judge Lippitt, is that you have to be very careful as a judge to notice when attorney’s are acting a little suspicious. Another very significant lesson I have learned from Judge Lippitt is that preparedness and awareness is really important.
Some include risks at the enterprise level, managing risks in complex projects and dealing with turnarounds and large capital projects. Liu, Zou, & Gong (2013) explore how enterprise risk management (ERM) may influence the ability and performance of project management risk (PRM) by considering the features of the construction industry, its businesses and projects. Managing risks within projects such as these has become an important process to achieve project objectives in terms of the scope, time and cost. The results show that enterprise risk management can positively influence the implementation of project risk management. This can be achieved through implementing a risk focused culture, setting up risk management departments and setting up risk procedures. This will help control the project risk and improve the performance of project risk management. Communicating the concerns with other team members can help identify the risks earlier on rather than later in the development of the project. Initially when I was looking for an internship, my goal was to find one that complemented my double major in criminology & criminal justice and psychology. During my search, I found some reputable organizations, but quickly discovered that they either required an extended training/orientation period or were not compatible with my schedule. Thus in finding the Urban Education Leaders Internship Program (UELIP) of the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS), which primarily focuses on an interest in education and public policy, I was skeptical that my interest in criminal psychology would be met. However, I quickly learned that this was not the case. Not only did my internship with DCPS indirectly appeal to my major, but it also provided me with a valuable experience in which I acquired fundamental skills and learned more about myself.
What are the benefits and advantages of internships? Internships help you gain exposure to real issues not found in textbooks, it also helps to increase your skills that are readily marketable from doing an internship. Interning can provide you with personal growth experiences and exposure to different job opportunities. Internships give you the opportunity to evaluate potential employers nearly risk free, which is a plus. I did an internship for a year at my church. The first thing I had to do was find the facility I was going to do the internship with. The next thing was to engage a suitable mentor for the work I was going to do as an intern. After talking to two perspective mentors one was chosen. Your mentor has to be dedicated to your success, and your spiritual growth. He or she must not be afraid of telling you the truth, and make sure you can follow instructions. An internship helps you to clarify your goals, gain experience by applying your knowledge and skills in work related situations.
The quarter has finally come to an end, and with that, I close out my internship and this class that went along with it. It was a great experience and I leave equipped with a new set of skills that are preparing me for the world ahead. As I write this reflection paper, I think back to the very first week when I set up two goals for myself to focus on and hope to achieve throughout the following weeks. My first goal was to develop a better understanding of myself within the work place, and my second was to develop a strong network to jumpstart my career. Both of my goals were achieved, however, I don’t feel that either of my goals will ever be complete. I believe that you can always formulate a better understanding of yourself, and you can always network to develop a stronger tree of connections. At first, I was very skeptical about the whole concept of an internship. Given the size of Providence, an organization that spans five states and employs over 82,000 people, I felt like a drop of water in a vast ocean. The idea of learning anything in such environment seemed unrealistic, let alone contributing to the organization’s growth. Most of all, I was conflicted by the notion of giving 200 hours of my life away without any sort of monetary compensations. In addition to incurring an implicit and explicit cost during my internship at Providence, after doing calculations I came to a conclusion that I would have made at least $2000 over the course of ten weeks if I were to take a part-time minimum wage job. From the economic feasibility perspective, I was losing money instead of making money. At the time, it seemed a preposterous idea to continue doing what I was doing, but in retrospect, the long-term impact of internship on my future career and personal development is priceless.
Throughout my internship, I was well trained and did receive a fruitful experience. The real working environment prepared me for future employment after my graduation. However, I did encounter some problems, which I gradually managed to deal with. Whatever happens, productivity increases by keeping a positive attitude.
During the course of time, I’ve learned many useful things that have led me to be the person I want to be today. From college classes to work experiences, I now have the ability to exceed upon internship experiences that can shape my perspective on life. This paper focuses on the personal experiences gained from the internship while supporting the functions of Human Resources (HR) at the University of Texas at El Paso.
