Initially when I was looking for an internship, my goal was to find one that complemented my double major in criminology & criminal justice and psychology. During my search, I found some reputable organizations, but quickly discovered that they either required an extended training/orientation period or were not compatible with my schedule. Thus in finding the Urban Education Leaders Internship Program (UELIP) of the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS), which primarily focuses on an interest in education and public policy, I was skeptical that my interest in criminal psychology would be met. However, I quickly learned that this was not the case. Not only did my internship with DCPS indirectly appeal to my major, but it also provided me with a valuable experience in which I acquired fundamental skills and learned more about myself.
Being that I am interested in the criminal justice system, I was assigned to the Office of Labor Management and Employee Relations (LMER) to a team of supervisors in the Office of Human Capital. LMER has the goal of assisting employees and making certain they comply with DCPS rules and regulations. This essentially means that they ensure that DCPS employees are not harassed or discriminated against, that their needs and concerns are addressed, and that they meet certain requirements such as their drug and alcohol testing. Due to the legislative nature of my team, I felt that the different tasks and responsibilities I was given intersected with my University studies. More specifically, the tasks I learned were similar to my criminal justice courses. For example, this semester, I took CCJS 300: Criminal Justice Research Methods in which I learned about the components of research design and data colle...

...s far and what they hope to accomplish for the rest of the time they spend there. This “progress report” would allow fellow students to learn more about each other’s internship and maybe help them to decide if they would like to pursue an internship at a particular place in the future. I feel that the addition of these changes would enhance the Capstone internship experience and bring more of a personal component to the class.

I would hope to allow myself to distinguish myself from other students and make myself more prevalent and outstanding in my specific classes. As I would like to purse a degree in Psychology with a minor in Criminology, I would like to become an ‘All around Psychologist’ dabbling in numerous sections of the ‘Psychology life.’ It is my belief that this HBCU would give me all mental and educational tools that will aid me in being the best in my chosen field. It is not that I do not like the educational system at my current university, it is just that i feel as though I can excel beyond measures at my new university coming this Spring.
In order for JP Morgan Chase to consider me as a prospect candidate as one of their summer interns, I will have to demonstrate to the recruiter I poses the type of skills they seek for. On the on-line job web site under description they list that the summer candidate that will be chosen must be able to work under pressure, tight deadlines, able to adapt well and assume high level of responsibility. They also require for this person to have a well rounded academic background in finance, a GPA of 3.0, strong teamwork, communication skills, and high energy level. Since the characteristics for the summer intern job come so close to the ones I already have it seems to be a perfect match opportunity for me and for JP Morgan Chase bank.

The quest for knowledge and understanding drives individuals to explore the unknown and live out the thoughts that once consumed their minds. Experience and formed opinions are the end results of these journeys; assumptions are either reinforced or shattered, but either way the truth is a little bit closer than before. Dark and gray areas consume the field of criminal justice; only personal experience can serve as a light. Participating in the internship program offered through the College of Criminal Justice at Sam Houston State University has become that light. Throughout this semester the knowledge acquired from SHSU criminal justice classes combined with the experiences gained from the Dallas County Adult Probation Department has produced an exceptional understanding of fact and theory pertaining to the field of criminal justice. Courses such as Criminology 262 and the Fundamentals of Criminal Law 264 contributed to the personal triumph gained from involvement in the internship program and allowed individual strengths and weaknesses to ...
I have always taken an interest in Criminal Justice and crime prevention ever since middle school and I set out to make my career goal to become a Criminal Justice professional. Thus, pursuing a Criminal Justice master’s degree has been a part of my plans for the future and will become one of my core focuses that I will set up in my graduate studies. It will also enable me to become a more competent working professional and encourage me to advance towards the doctoral program.
Internships provide students with opportunities to apply theoretical and basic knowledge gained in the classroom. During the field placement period, the agency supervisor becomes the primary teacher, aside from the clients, in the student's day-to-day learning. The supervisor is responsible for coordinates the student's overall experience by helping the student integrate the various pieces of the Field Internship. However, to make the placement, a positive experience supervisor need to be aware of student’s strengths, and learning needs to match assignments accordingly.
The accelerated school counseling program with the yearlong internship is another reason I am interested in the University of North Carolina. The yearlong internship will be the most beneficial aspect of the program because of the opportunity to fully develop relationships with both students and staff, as well as have the opportunity to handle a wide range of issues that occur during a school year.
As an undergraduate, at Western Michigan University, my studies were in psychology. Having previously worked with both children in schools and elders in nursing homes, I wanted to expand my resume when I chose my field work. I was able to complete my hours at Gryphon Place in Kalamazoo. This is a conflict and crisis center where I specialized in crisis intervention and suicide prevention. This experience gave me a feeling of accomplishment and pride in knowing that I was not only helping others but also saving lives. After working at Gryphon Place my career outlook changed drastically. Originally I just wanted to work with kids and I
I may pursuit a career working in recovery or something with the police force. I was informed that having Behavioral Health as my major I am able to combine my profession. If I decide that I would like to work in the criminal justice field along with another profession that goes hand in hand, then I can. It is nice to know that I am not subjected to stay with one profession. I am able to expand to different fields and build up my experiences and career. It may be a lot of work but at the end it is worth all the effort and dedication. My mind is not made up yet, hopefully by the time graduation is here I’ll have my mind made
My long term goal within my degree of forensic psychology is to be able to create or find alternative ways for those who suffer from psychological disabilities that are frequently put into jails & prisons by the criminal justice system to have a different means of finding help & deterrence to stay out of trouble. I feel that in order to do that I have to initially become a leader for myself & set myself to a standard that I feel is needed to succeed in my long term goal & hopefully influence others in helping with the goal or achieving a goal of their own within the
I did not have the best experience in school, I always struggled and I wasn’t the smartest. I knew that there was no other choice because I needed a college degree to get a good job to make good money. There are very limited things that one can do with a high school diploma. I contemplated going to beauty school, but my parents thought I had much more potential, and that it would go to waste. I realized very late that it college is very expensive. I received scholarships from various private schools which covered only two-thirds of the tuition. My dad was not permitting me to take loans. Because of the Excelsior scholarship and because I was rejected by Farmingdale, I decided that I was going to attend Old Westbury. I began to search through the list of programs they had to offer. I went over the list twice to see if I missed anything that could potentially interest me. Criminology struck my attention. I wasn't exactly sure what it was, but I suddenly grew curious to find out. I did my research and I was very fascinated with what I had learned. So I thought that it would be fun to study crime and criminal behavior because in a way it would
In today’s world, students lack experience in their desired field. Neoliberalism places responsibility on the individual for both their successes and failures. Internships have become a necessity in a neoliberalism society because it teaches students that for them to advance in their career, they must gain the skills and experience that internships give them. They require a person to become proactive for them to make the most of their experience. Society has encouraged universities to use internships to allow students to receive academic credit. Deluca and Minkove mentioned that schools “must find ways to make our ‘product’—our students—more valuable, and we must ‘produce’ them in more efficient way (since) the present economic
An internship with Time Inc. would provide me the opportunity to work with some of the most well-respected and well-known brands in all of media. In this environment, and surrounded by some of the best creative minds in the industry, I will help provide new and interesting content. Time Inc. expects its interns to come in and contribute immediately, and I believe that I have the necessary skills and prior experience to succeed.
The quarter has finally come to an end, and with that, I close out my internship and this class that went along with it. It was a great experience and I leave equipped with a new set of skills that are preparing me for the world ahead. As I write this reflection paper, I think back to the very first week when I set up two goals for myself to focus on and hope to achieve throughout the following weeks. My first goal was to develop a better understanding of myself within the work place, and my second was to develop a strong network to jumpstart my career. Both of my goals were achieved, however, I don’t feel that either of my goals will ever be complete. I believe that you can always formulate a better understanding of yourself, and you can always network to develop a stronger tree of connections. I know for a fact, however, that I reached satisfaction with both of my goals at this internship at MKI and know whole-heartedly that I did everything in my power to exhaust my resources in
During the course of time, I’ve learned many useful things that have led me to be the person I want to be today. From college classes to work experiences, I now have the ability to exceed upon internship experiences that can shape my perspective on life. The purpose of this paper is to summarize, reflect, analyze, and synthesize on my internship experience at the Children’s Home of Reading-Acute Partial Hospitalization Program.
