Interesting enough, I transferred from my local community college in Charles County so I never actually took PHSC 101 or 303. I however took something similar in some aspects to these two particular classes. I learned some very effective lessons to help me teach science. One of the main lessons I learned involved the use of power points. In many of my science classes most always the teachers would use a power point to go over a different chapter each week. Sometimes these power points would be straight forward other times they would be interesting. But it wasn’t just the power point that structured the lesson; it was what type of strategies my professor put into the power point to make it effective. For example, with one of the past
One of the first things I have for future students is start your assignments early. The reason I say this is because SCIE 376 isn’t your only class this semester, and so because of that you will get fairly busy fairly quickly. So completing your assignments early no matter how small they are is a great idea. Second piece of advice I have for future SCIE 376 students is even though there are only a few online quizzes you should take them straight off the bat to like the very first piece of advice to get them straight off the bat. The only difference though is that in my opinion you should really print out read, and have the information for the particular quizzes in front of you as you 're taking said quiz. Another piece of advice I have for students in this class. Is don’t worry about trying to get your science journals together the reason I say this is because for my particular class we had to come into class at 2 15pm but the actual class did not start till 2 15pm so we had in total 2 hours of going over our assignment time, what else you could do in between that time is making your science journals for your students. Another piece of advice I have for you is start on this final exam fairly early I say this because as the semester gets closer and closer to the end you will have more and more assignments due around the same time, and because of that it will get difficult to complete some as well as organizing which ones to do so like before, which is what I have been saying since the beginning of this paragraph if you are able to get an assignment done early take that chance and do it. Also, when going through this whole class, interning at this school may seem scary, or overbearing, but don’t worry this is meant to be a learning experience; you are not meant to get everything right or isn’t even supposed
In my Teaching Professions with Field Experience class, we were to create two lesson plans throughout the semester; one that involved the use of technology and the other without. The rules that went along with the lesson plans were as follows: the speaker is supposed to act out the lesson that they have prepared and their classmates were supposed to act accordingly to what grade level the lesson pertained to. Lastly, during the presentations, the students were to write three good qualities the speaker or the presentation had. In addition, they had to write one wish which was something a student thinks would make the lesson better. For the first project lesson I constructed, I incorporated the use of technology to discuss the identification and use of monochromatic colors for the sixth grade level.
This course and as in Honors Biology, we were taught in a more oneself teaching rather than a lecture. I like the idea of not having a lecture, but when the teacher took a day to do a quick overview of each chapter, I learned the material and understood the material the best. I wish that we had that in each unit because I truly do like biology and when I understand a new concept fully it made me feel 10 times more comfortable on the test and the
Everyone was confused on what to do when they got on there to do the assignment. Since all we did this semester was capsim are we going to do something different that won’t involve capsim? Don’t get me wrong I liked during the module it was fun, but when all the module were over I didn’t really know what to do. What material are we going to use next semester. Are we going to try and finish the assignment on capsim or are we going to do something that is similar to capsim. Other than all the questions I asked already I don’t have anymore because I felt like this class was too hard for me to get. All I am hopping for is that next semester is easier because I really want to learn something in this class. I am not saying that I didn’t learned anything all I am saying is I want to actually want to learn something that I will get and not have to take a guess at it. I feel like next semester as a class we need to be doing more business stuff for example hands-on stuff so we can feel like we actually business
...Some of the concepts we have had to learn include drawing the different elements in a bohr rutherford diagram, balancing chemical equations, types of chemical reactions, and the different types of acids and bases. Overall there were many other things in the unit that were very eye-opening as well, but these four definately helped me as a student have that ‘ah-ha’ moment, and they have definitely helped me learn about chemistry in a more in-depth way, appreciate chemistry and the science behind it a lot more, as well as teaching me something very new things such as how to neutralize Hydrochloric Acid inside of your stomach when it starts to pain. Learning these concepts in the classroom has really opened my eyes to the world in which we live in today, and now personally I will forever hold these memories and knowledge in my mind for when I really need it in my life.
During my placement at Reagan Elementary I realized that not much science was taught in the classes. Most of the science they did was done in relationship to reading or Language Arts. I think that this is a great way to incorporate a subject into the classroom if specific time cannot be allotted for science alone. Science is a very important topic that needs to be taught to students. It expands their knowledge about the world around them, how it works, the diversity that can be found in our planet and much more. Our country is a scientific and technology one and students need to be able to function. In order to give students the best science education Next Generation Science Standards for California have been created. They allow all the topics to be associated with another subject and it too allows students to use their critical thinking skills and enhance on their
After reflecting on the lesson performed in my cooperation classroom, I have many thoughts on the lesson. My partner Kate and I decided that we would do the lesson together and have the entire class evolved. When we got to the classroom we realized that the students were having a math test that day and we had to change our plans slightly to make our lesson fit in the time slot. Luckily we have two prep periods before the students even have class so we were able to go through our lesson and make sure we knew what we were going to say. Our lesson occurred right after their lunch period so around 12:30, however the students took their math test first. The lesson we did was based our lesson on the next section in the book, which was telling time. The objective of the lesson was to further the student’s knowledge of time and who to tell time.
After finishing the teaching part of the lesson, I realized that not everything goes according to plan. For example, in our lesson plan, we had the explain portion detailed and outlined to teach students the technical terms of what they were seeing in the stations and other activities and make it a collaborative effort within groups to work with the vocabulary words. However, the teaching of the plan was not well executed. Also, I learned that teaching a topic does not have to be boring or just full of worksheets. Fun, engaging lab stations and interactive activities can fulfill the standards and requirements just as well, if not better, than basic worksheets and PowerPoint lectures. Lastly, I realized that lesson planning and teaching require a great deal of effort and work, but it is all worth it when a light bulb goes off in a students’ head and they learn something new and are excited to be learning and extend their science
Understanding ourselves as teachers helps us to better determine how we relate to students, policies and practices that we use in the classroom or online and this is not an easy task. Stories are used to open up communication with the students and can identify you as a teacher. Stories can be looked at from different viewpoints and perspectives, depending on your belief system. Telling stories invites others to see you as a teacher and can reveal to us as teachers, how much we know.
Reflection is cognitive activity in which individual teachers engage in examination of their own actions, beliefs, thoughts, values, identities, and so on and the effects of these on their practice and others in the professional context in order to have deep and new understanding about their overall experience (Bolton, 2010; Seibert & Daudelin, 1999). In other words, it is not passive rather active, conscious, deliberate, and persistent process by which an experience, in the form of thought, feeling, or action, is brought into consideration and examined and knowledge from it is developed (Seibert & Daudelin, 1999). This reflection on experience is considered as learning conversation, method of accounting for the self and others, critical approach
"The important thing is not so much that every child should be taught, as every child should be instilled with the wish to learn."
“The well-being of every person on this planet is inextricably tied to the quality of our common life,” at first, I was very confused as to what the following sentence was saying but having spent some time thinking about it, I completely agree. This statement is saying that the personal choices we make every day impact those around us and I think this is very true. The thought of my personal choices affecting those around me is scary because I wouldn’t want to be the one to harm others. If someone had asked me this before taking Core 5, I would have most likely said no the statement above is not true. However, after hearing many lectures and doing all of the readings I can say that our choices, no matter how big or how small, can affect others in more ways than I had thought possible.
My earliest memory of a science teacher was in second grade. Although I was still in elementary school and I hadn’t yet had a class specifically based around science; she still incorporated it into all of our lessons most of which were hands-on. I can remember her going around the classroom and pulling out jars filled with all sorts of species, and passing them around. My interest began early on.
After being asked to complete three observations of different classrooms as an assignment for my teaching internship, I chose to observe a second-grade classroom, a third-grade classroom, and a 1st. grade classroom that differed from the one I am currently completing my internship in. Through this experience, I had the opportunity to observe two different math lessons and a phonics lesson, respectively. Through this process, I gained some insight into how other teachers lead and instruct their class, found similarities to the room I am currently in, and made new discoveries on how best to lead a room full of students.
The dictionaries ' definition of learning and education is that learning is through experience, study, or by being taught, but education is through the systematic receiving of instruction. Over time, I have come to see that education sometimes is the same as learning. This, however, is a view I have always taken. I haven 't always viewed them as the same thing. For many years, I would stubbornly fight education, even though I love and have always loved learning, when told to do something I would become stubborn and make assignments ten times harder than it should have been. This struggle in my life greatly influenced not only how I view education and learning but also my assumptions and expectations with them.
As an individual I put a lot of pressure on how I teach and while analyzing there where many things I would like to change. Every lesson can and should be improved. While observing my interaction with the students I noticed a few things. During the lesson I asked a few students to pay attention by saying their name and as a teacher I should have used positive comments. Such as stating I like how this girl is sitting, which is more positive than stating the child’s name. Positive comments are more beneficial than negative comments, and while teaching stating things in a positive way was forgotten. One of the students has a designated seat in the class and at the beginning of the lesson I should have stated everybody
