As an individual I put a lot of pressure on how I teach and while analyzing there where many things I would like to change. Every lesson can and should be improved. While observing my interaction with the students I noticed a few things. During the lesson I asked a few students to pay attention by saying their name and as a teacher I should have used positive comments. Such as stating I like how this girl is sitting, which is more positive than stating the child’s name. Positive comments are more beneficial than negative comments, and while teaching stating things in a positive way was forgotten. One of the students has a designated seat in the class and at the beginning of the lesson I should have stated everybody

This experience was only thirty hours, so my experience in the classroom is limited and teaching is a career that need hands on experience. Each time I teach I need to observe and analyze my teaching because it will allow me to make adjustment to become a better teacher. While teaching I would state the students name to get them to focus on the instruction. Instead of calling out students out I will attempt to use positive comments like “I like the way this girl is raising her hand.” These types of comments allow the students to be encouraged in a positive light, positivity is something that benefits the classroom and the students. While teaching one of the students came in and needed to find a seat, and as the teacher I stopped the lesson to try and find him a seat. This type of situation will come up and I will need to be prepared for it. After analyzing the video I thought I went about the situation right, but I could have gotten up and helped more. Appropriate language is something that I needed to use. There will be moments in the classroom where the teacher is not prepared for what the students say. Before teaching this lesson, I prepared for every little thing that I could think of. The students surprised me and a couple of their comments and questions I was not prepared for. One of the students noticed a clam shell on the book page, which is beneficial to all of the students learning. Students learn through a variety of ways and as an individual I know talking and communicating is a way of learning. Discussion can be beneficial and as a teacher we need create positive discussion that students feel safe to talk in. I am thankful that I had this experience. What I found in watching the video, was that I need to work on my speaking ability. Fewer giggles, an increased grasp of words, and working on leading students to correct answers through asking the right questions. My strengths included beginning the session by introducing ourselves to each other and creating a welcoming environment. I intentionally worked to invite all the students by name to offer their opinion on the videos and stories. I deliberately incorporated the teaching methods that we were taught that Jesus used, beginning a lesson by first asking what your students already know or believe, then complimenting them on what they knew. Students have said how they will not talk or ask questions in some teachers’ classrooms because the teacher does not respect their talk or questions. In those classrooms, the students sit silently as the teacher does all the talking and the students only listen. These teachers are missing a great teaching tool, talking. A classroom should be filled with appropriate talking by everyone.
I listen to my students. I allow time for their individual impute in what they are learning, and adjust accordingly. I really believe that is why students can be so into the idea of being taught, because they are all encouraged to lead the discussion and projects before them as it relates to the curriculum. I try to learn from my students by listening to their interpretation. I am learning what interest them, and feed off of it in the work that needs to be performed. Reflection 1: The first incident, and without doubt the most noticeable of any incident that could possibly occur in a classroom, that I was unfortunate to come across, was racism within the class. While helping out one student I overheard two boys in the class being racially abused by another boy approximately 3 years their junior. Upon hearing this I kind of panicked at first and let it slide once, thinking it was said in the heat of the moment (the boys were bickering prior to this incident). However as the incident developed, I stepped in and told the boy to stop. After telling him 2 or 3 times, he eventually stopped. This incident was later reported to the teacher supervising the class at the time.

After spending some time reading about effective teaching, I found that one of the key aspects that seemed to come up most was communication. I believe that as a teacher you will need to have a range of communication, interpersonal and group skills. Communication is not just about being able to speak with your students , but also include writing, reading, listening with your eyes and ears, and also body language.( Ornstein, Lasley ,2004) For effective communication a teacher must interact and communicate respect , there should always be respect for the students, Parents, Colleague’s and their network of educational professionals . I feel that listening deeply and giving credit for the student’s contributions will encourage respect from the students, a great example of this can be seen in the (Online course: Becoming a Teacher,2005). However, there is only one downfall to this class. When presenting videos, as a class, we are to give written and verbal feedback to students. I feel that in some cases other classmates did not take feedback respectively. I feel like it was disrespectful. Despite my help, I felt like the classmate was trying to prove a point at the learner’s expense. I understand it is hard to take constructive criticism. However, we only learn from feedback. I believe that a classroom should be a safe zone where students are able to express themselves without fear of being made fun of, a place where the only “stupid question” is not asking a question. I feel as a teacher I must lead by example, that only through seeing and experiencing acceptance can my students truly be accepting of those in their classroom, that are different.
Student teaching has taught me to appreciate the wisdom of mentors and experienced teachers. There were several times when my field based supervisors pointed my in the right direction when faced with challenges. I recall a student that I suspected to have copied his homework from other students. I stressed that we figure out how he did it but I could not some up with any definite facts to prove he had did so. Ms. Darling insisted that I not worry about it and if he did cheat then it would be revealed on his exam. Surely enough, the student failed his exam miserably. During a teacher/parent conference, I asked him how he managed to receive an A on all of his homework and fail his exam so poorly. To my astonishment the student confessed to having copied his homework from other students. His mother immediately addressed both issues with her child and needless to say I did not have the problems form the student anymore. During my computer Information technology Course, discipline problems plagued me during the first two weeks of student teaching. Mr. Washington, another field based supervisor told me to began calling parents immediately after class. He told me to call everyday if I had to. Surely after a few phone calls to parents, behaviors adjusted quickly. By the end of my student teaching time period, in my opinion I had a model classroom as far as classroom behavior goes.
This being my first year of teaching I feel there are so many things that I have learned, and have helped me too become a good teacher. Yet I have so much more to learn, I still believe that students have the ability to learn and as a teacher it is my job to find ways to help them to become the best person they can be. Through being a reflective teacher, using professionalism, respecting diversity and having collaboration and community connecting this can be accomplished. When I am having fun teaching the student will have learning that material, this will help them to be relaxed and engaged in that lesson. I feel it is important to connect what they are learning to things that they have experienced in the real-world.
In my prerequisite observation hours I observed an outstanding teacher, who I learned a lot from about having respect between the teacher and students. For this teacher she made sure that her students had a voice in the classroom, and in return when it was her turn to speak the students sat in their desks and listened intently. I chose to do my teacher interview in my home town at Richard D. Crosby Elementary School. This K-3rd grade building is very new, it was built in 2010. It has 4 pods, one for each grade level and has a large discovery center in each pod. The school is very colorful, with each pod a different color so the children find it easy to go from area to area. I did my interview with Mrs. Doe, a special education teacher. Her room has a lot of materials for learning and is set up to have several work stations for group activities. Mrs. Doe shares her students with other special education teachers and also has a special education classroom aide. My research question is how does a teacher’s perspective on learning reflect theories and concepts in educational psychology? Mrs. Doe is faced with many challenges in her classroom, overcrowding, multi-cultural differences, learning disabilities, several students with low socioeconomic status and English language learners. There are many challenges for Mrs. Doe to deal with, but she has been teaching for 21 years and has a lot of experience. She started out as a regular classroom teacher, but switched to special education and has done so well that when she asked if she could return to the regular classroom setting, the Superintendent begged her to stay in the special education department because of her success.
... I feel similarly about teachers who choose lecturing as their main method of instruction. It is very boring and can cause problems with learners who are not auditory learners. I also will avoid presenting a negative attitude around my students. I believe that if you portray negativity, it is normally what you receive in return. It is better to show respect to get respect in return. Setting high expectations and boundaries will be very helpful for your students and show them that I can still have a positive attitude when something doesn’t go the way I believe it should.
Over the course of observations, I learned that there is no one way to do anything in teaching. After a few weeks of observing, I was relieved because I thought that I could stop worrying so much about doing the “right” thing with the students. I saw a successful teacher doing, or neglecting to do things that went against what I had been taught. I incorrectly assumed that the choices the teacher made about how to organize the day, approach a lesson, or manage the classroom were mostly a matter of personal preference and that several approaches would produce equally desirable results.
At the end of the day or beginning of the school day, I communicated what I did with Ms. P to plan out better activities or lesson plans to meet each individual’s needs.
