Statement of Purpose
Throughout my adult life and higher education becoming an elementary school teacher has been a goal of mine. Growing up I spent time in my mother’s classroom observing what it takes to be a teacher. It wasn’t until I started college that I realized what it really takes to become a teacher, and I realized that I wanted to become an elementary school teacher. In September 2015 I started working at a daycare with children from the ages of six months to twelve years. In that setting I learned how important it is to have a connection with the children, also including their parent. In my job I respect the children and listen to their thoughts and opinions, and in return they show the same level of respect, if not more. When being a teacher there must be respect between the teacher and the student. In my prerequisite observation hours I observed an outstanding teacher, who I learned a lot from about having respect between the teacher and students. For this teacher she made sure that her students had a voice in the classroom, and in return when it was her turn to speak the students sat in their desks and listened intently. I know what kind of teacher I want to be, but through this program I will develop my thoughts and ideas and be able to apply them in a classroom. Through this program I want to be able to become a teacher that can connect with her students as well as teach them the material through interactive activities. From what I have observed students learn better when they are actively engaged in their academics. I hope to obtain a better understanding of how to encourage students to strive to be the best they can
While growing up and observing my teachers at school, I have learned that it isn’t always an easy job. Teachers do everything they can to teach their students’ academic, social and other formative skills. Plenty of my teachers have to deal with complications, most of them being minor, but it isn’t always an easy job helping children, teens and young adults. As a student myself, I know they can be stubborn, unwilling to learn, aggressive, and irresponsible. Sometimes, they simply don’t care. However, that is a teacher's purpose: to help and shape their students to become better learners, so that they have a clearer understanding regarding a variety of subject matters. Someday, I actually want to become an elementary art teacher, which is why I researched this career. I chose to gather more information of what skills it takes to be a teacher and what you need to do to successfully fulfill this career.
Back in my teenage days, I was once told by my teacher saying that “I believe no one can teach you how to act, but schools do give you an environment to make mistakes, to learn techniques and to learn professionalism”. Looking back at those words really gave me the inspiration to become a professional teacher in the kindergarten to teach, to learn new things, gaining new experiences and knowledge as well as being a professional. Although, there are few challenges that I have been struggled but those words make me works harder every day to make a big achievement and to show that I am able to achieve it. Becoming a professional early childhood educator may not be an easy job to me, but I am willing to try my best by not letting them down and
My goal as a teacher is to provide children with a rich environment where they feel safe to explore, initiate learning, and feel free to express their feelings. My personal philosophy is to respect all children and their families’ cultures, ethnicities, race, and beliefs. I treat each child fairly to ensure that all children feel equally special, have families, communities, and educators work as one.
After spending some time reading about effective teaching, I found that one of the key aspects that seemed to come up most was communication. I believe that as a teacher you will need to have a range of communication, interpersonal and group skills. Communication is not just about being able to speak with your students , but also include writing, reading, listening with your eyes and ears, and also body language.( Ornstein, Lasley ,2004) For effective communication a teacher must interact and communicate respect , there should always be respect for the students, Parents, Colleague’s and their network of educational professionals . I feel that listening deeply and giving credit for the student’s contributions will encourage respect from the students, a great example of this can be seen in the (Online course: Becoming a Teacher,2005). Being a teacher is a noble cause, though it also seems to be the dream of idiots and morons. It is a job where you work constantly and are always told what to teach. You are expected to teach to a standardized test. It is a job path that only the bravest take. The people who claim that those who can’t do teach, know nothing about teaching or how hard it is to teach. Especially high school students who have no desire to learn. Children in their last required chapter in their education. Their young pubescent minds focused more on the opposite sex over their grades. How do you teach such a difficult age group? How do you keep them engaged? Especially with a subject that so many find boring and tedious, English and English literature.
Many people on this earth grow up saying they would like to make a difference in this world. However, half of those people do not feel like putting in the work in order to do so. As an elementary education major, making a difference is one of the main goals. There are many benefits of becoming a teacher, and students benefit as well. In order to have many students successfully graduate from one grade to the next a teacher should be willing to put in as much work that is needed. Elementary school is where children are set up for the rest of their education. It is important to understand how to go into this career field, becoming a teacher has its own benefits, and the children are able to benefit from teachers.

Becoming a teacher has been the ultimate aspiration for myself since the first day I walked into kindergarten. As a very timid student, it was a difficult task transitioning from being with my mother everyday, to being part of a classroom environment full of strangers. However, my kindergarten teacher helped me through this transition smoothly, and adequately. I very quickly learned to love school. Soon after, I knew I would aspire to become a teacher. I would spend countless hours at home with a blackboard, acting as a teacher to my imaginary students throughout my elementary school years.
When I was in high school, I had various teachers in every class, but my University prep teacher was special among all the teachers. She was genuinely dedicated to all the students in her class, and she never forsook the students who those needed help. She was supportive, passionate, amusing, and most importantly devoted to every student in her class. Currently there are numerous teachers having a mindset of just doing their job instead of being more valuable for students. Every teacher who makes the students feel special about them have high attributes. There are three main attributes of a great teacher, such as devotion to the students, eagerness to have a significant modification, and being inspirational.
One of the most effective ways teachers are able to manage a classroom is through developing positive relationships with students (Emmer & Evertson, 2013). When students feel they are valued and cared for by their teacher, they are much more likely to comply with rules and procedures. A classroom teacher has the great responsibility and privilege to be around students for up to seven hours per day, five days per week for around nine months and during that time, teachers must work to develop positive teacher-student relationships with each student (Boynton & Boynton, 2005). When students are able to experience healthy relationships with their teachers, they grow personally and are self-motivated and achieve academic success (Tassione & Inlay, 2014). There are a number of ways to enrich these relationships and they are all initiated by the teacher. While there are many ways teachers will find to develop teacher-student relationships, only a select number of them will be discussed here.
This semester, I had opportunity to observe a first grade classroom for my Intro to Teaching class. During my observations, I saw how the teacher instilled qualities such as patience into to her students. When one of the younger, students began to display aggressive impatient qualities such as shoving to get to the front of the line, the teacher taught self-restraint by rewarding the child when he displayed this virtuous quality. At that moment, I learned that a teacher is responsible for much more than just teaching the subjects in their lesson play, but is responsible for ensuring their students become responsible, kind, and honest
First, I realized that, teachers carry a lot of weight on their shoulders and have great responsibilities. They have to balance the curriculum, students, parents, lesson plans, common core, and upper management and still maintain a professional demeanor. Second, educators must follow a strong code of ethics. They must be professional at all times with students and colleagues, keep confidentiality, not have or show any prejudice or bias, maintain safe and positive learning environments, help students with problems, and hand out disciplines accordingly. Lastly, I found that when you’re a teacher, your education never stops. Teachers are always trying to improve their own education and professional growth, both for the benefit of their students and for the benefit of themselves.
His eyes seemed to appear as if a thin gloss covered them and thick deep black circles engraved his skin below. His facial expressions displayed emotions from curiosity to worry. He walked in with both parents clutching his hands and an interpreter followed the young Chinese couple. Neither he nor his parents spoke one word of English; the only person to help cross the language barrier was the so called interpreter, who turned out to be little help in the future. In the midst of trying to communicate with the parents through the use of the interpreter we gathered little information about our new student. We did however conclude that two days ago the family boarded a plane in a small town in a rural area of China and endured a 13 hour flight to come to Houston, Texas. The way the innocent young Chinese family appeared, I could tell they were still adjusting to the time difference. Their reason for leaving their home remained up in the air. The interpreter however became helpful in giving the basic information of our student’s name. Recognizing that any normal American’s tongue would become entangled with each syllable of his real Chinese name, his parents decided to define our new student as George. During the rest of my internship, it would be my obligation to teach George the basics of English grammar and to try to immerse him into the United States culture, without knowing that he would significantly change my outlook on teaching completely.
To help students up the ladder, school indirectly teaches its students about respect. Although not found on the pages of any text book, learning lessons in respect can be very helpful. The idea of respect starts with teachers and often branches to the development of peer and self respect. Everyone has experienced a teacher that they couldn't stand and dreaded going to that class. It was times like that which challenged the respect that had begun to develop. In eight grade, my english teacher was one of the mose mean people I have ever met. I got a 0 on a quiz because I spelled one word wrong (it was not a spelling quiz). I hated going to her class, half the time, I just wanted to scream at her.
Each relationship is different and each teacher has his or her own way with students. I have seen from a distance that for the most part students have great respect for teachers and therefore get respect in return. A couple of teachers expect respect, and since it is not earned, students do not always give it. I live by the thoughts that I have to earn the respect of the student body and model behaviors for them. The relationship I build with them is up to me, but in order for great things to happen, I need to foster individual relationships and show that I care.
