Back in my teenage days, I was once told by my teacher saying that “I believe no one can teach you how to act, but schools do give you an environment to make mistakes, to learn techniques and to learn professionalism”. Looking back at those words really gave me the inspiration to become a professional teacher in the kindergarten to teach, to learn new things, gaining new experiences and knowledge as well as being a professional. Although, there are few challenges that I have been struggled but those words make me works harder every day to make a big achievement and to show that I am able to achieve it. When it is coming to define the term of “Professionalism” it has specific needs of every discipline. Hence, most of these definitions agreed that professional demonstrates behavior that show the knowledge and the skills of the profession. Regardless the lack of a professionalism definition, it is a consistent in the prose that are expected to have specific knowledge which they can utilize to make judgements, specialized training, characters that are unique in the field and the standards that are answerable. One of the first steps in of professionalism is dress; I make sure I am always dressed both professionally and comfortably for our classroom setting. For example if I know we are going to the Playscape, I wear either closed toed tennis or water shoes so I can get down and dirty and interacting with the children, really exploring the landscape. If I am wearing a dress I am conscious of how I sit or even go at step further and wear leggings underneath just so I don’t have to be worried. Another aspect of professionalism in the classroom is language. I always use appropriate language when speaking to the children, parents and my coworkers. Confidentiality is also a part of professionalism. Whenever I am taking notes or speaking of a child I am sure to keep it a confidential, I do not use names and am sure to only keep the information between the teaching team and I.
Professionalism is defined as one's conduct at work. The quality of professionalism is not restricted to those in occupations with high level of education or high earnings. I already knew the basis of what professionalism was, but in this class, it went details, examples, and scenarios, instead of just the broad description. Every teacher has this potential whether they are aware of it or not. I have been a teacher for nine years in early childhood education and within those nine years I have become very aware of how powerful the smallest act of caring can turn a person’s life around or even just make someone’s day a little better. Being a preschool teacher has brought me great pleasure to my life simply brightening a child’s day and knowing that I am making a difference in their life. As an Early Childhood Educator we need to have self-confidence and have positive self-worth and be able to show that we believe in our ability to perform our job. By having good self-confidence and self-worth it helps us observe our children more accurately and have knowledge when we need to make a decision. Being aware of our expectations of our self and of our children helps us be open minded and it also helps us to grow as a caregiver. I believe that Early childhood educators are also to be respectful and caring to the children in our care. I feel we should remain respectful to the children even when our days may be long and difficult.
If popular and professional research is valid, then mentoring would be the cure for many ills regarding personal development, professional development, and career advancement. In context, everyone needs a mentor, beginning teachers, disadvantaged youth, student teachers, prospective administrators, etc. Almost every supportive relationship is some form of mentoring (Mertz, 2004). Within the most often cited popular definitions are those that focus on the career advancement or professional growth of a protégée by someone in higher authority within the professional realm (Mertz, 2004).
Mentoring is a strong educational tool and is very useful especially within the New York City Department of Education. It is a great way for experience teachers to pass down information. The one and one interaction is more lasting than reading it from a book. This method will allow a smooth transition for new teachers. There are a lot of procedures that are confusing to beginners and mentors can uncoil those kinks. Beginning teacher will also get the opportunity to experience different teaching styles and also decide what will work for them and what will not. Finally I am ready to be an Early Childhood Educator and just waiting to implement all my learning into my profession. I have passed a long two years of journey to be an Early Childhood Educator and gained knowledge about children’s holistic development, process of their physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and language development. I know how to ensure safety for children. I concern about each and individual child’s health and well being and work collaboratively with my co worker to ensure this. Also in these two years of course, I have learned all guidance strategies that can regulates children’s social and emotional behaviours.
