Back in my teenage days, I was once told by my teacher saying that “I believe no one can teach you how to act, but schools do give you an environment to make mistakes, to learn techniques and to learn professionalism”. Looking back at those words really gave me the inspiration to become a professional teacher in the kindergarten to teach, to learn new things, gaining new experiences and knowledge as well as being a professional. Although, there are few challenges that I have been struggled but those words make me works harder every day to make a big achievement and to show that I am able to achieve it. When it is coming to define the term of “Professionalism” it has specific needs of every discipline. Hence, most of these definitions agreed that professional demonstrates behavior that show the knowledge and the skills of the profession. Hurst and Guitierrez (2003) indicated that the noun professional means a person who does something with great skill. They also stated that the adjective professional means worthy of high standards of a profession. This means that for teachers to be professional, they need to learn what those high standards are and then strive to meet them. Anaduaka, (2010) took these ideas a step further and stated that getting the job done very well, is good enough for non-professionals, but continually improving the way the job is done both for themselves and others, is the hallmark of professionals.
Mentoring is a strong educational tool and is very useful especially within the New York City Department of Education. It is a great way for experience teachers to pass down information. The one and one interaction is more lasting than reading it from a book. This method will allow a smooth transition for new teachers. There are a lot of procedures that are confusing to beginners and mentors can uncoil those kinks. Beginning teacher will also get the opportunity to experience different teaching styles and also decide what will work for them and what will not. Mentoring is a valuable asset in guiding person’s development.
Every teacher has this potential whether they are aware of it or not. I have been a teacher for nine years in early childhood education and within those nine years I have become very aware of how powerful the smallest act of caring can turn a person’s life around or even just make someone’s day a little better. Being a preschool teacher has brought me great pleasure to my life simply brightening a child’s day and knowing that I am making a difference in their life. Through my journey as a teacher I have thought about how I can advance in my career field and still be active with children on a daily basis and continue making a difference in each child’s life as well as their parents. How one plans to tackle all of the challenges will help them when making decisions in the future. To many people, early childhood education is unnecessary. I realize that going into this teaching field, I will most likely have to interact with adults who will argue that it is useless. As an Early Childhood Educator we need to have self-confidence and have positive self-worth and be able to show that we believe in our ability to perform our job. By having good self-confidence and self-worth it helps us observe our children more accurately and have knowledge when we need to make a decision. Being aware of our expectations of our self and of our children helps us be open minded and it also helps us to grow as a caregiver. I believe that Early childhood educators are also to be respectful and caring to the children in our care. I feel we should remain respectful to the children even when our days may be long and difficult.
Additional expected qualities that create the essentials of professionalism in relation to teaching are a high level of cognitive skills and social capabilities together with experienced personal qualities as stated by Marsh (2008) which include sensitivity, compassion, reflective and innovative thinking and commitment and dedication to the job. This support to facilitate such desired moral qualities as respect, caring, integrity, diligence and open communication as outlined by Groundwater-Smith (2009), the relationship of which is reinforced by Whitton (2009 p.47) in defining professionalism in teaching as being “…dependant of correct standards with the right conduct or practice”.
If popular and professional research is valid, then mentoring would be the cure for many ills regarding personal development, professional development, and career advancement. In context, everyone needs a mentor, beginning teachers, disadvantaged youth, student teachers, prospective administrators, etc. Almost every supportive relationship is some form of mentoring (Mertz, 2004). Finally I am ready to be an Early Childhood Educator and just waiting to implement all my learning into my profession. I have passed a long two years of journey to be an Early Childhood Educator and gained knowledge about children’s holistic development, process of their physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and language development.
