In Ap biology, we were handed a Campbell Textbook before the class began in order to complete the pre-modules. I consider the textbook to be the most beneficial resource that we had during this course, due to the amount of detail, examples, and images that it contained explaining each concepts in a reliable way. The power points that were made to summarize the main points from the textbook were helpful, however they were really long and made me miss what was actually important and take additional notes on filler information. Due to the long powerpoints, I felt implied to take long and details notes, which people struggled in this class, either taking too much or too less. After two units passed, we were taught how our notes should be, which will later help us in college. This has helped my writing in english class on my senior paper, making my paper flow better. In this specific class, we have a problem with grouping with our friends and who we are comfortable with. Although this makes us more comfortable, I feel as if we stayed scattered in random groups it would allow others to make connections and experience a new type of environment. This is a somewhat divided class into four sections which should not be the case and will harm us when going to college.
This course and as in Honors Biology, we were taught in a more oneself teaching rather than a lecture. I like the idea of not having a lecture, but when the teacher took a day to do a quick overview of each chapter, I learned the material and understood the material the best. I have worked with groups ALOT, I am an Avid student so every Tuesday and Thursday we break into to small groups and to tutorials. On Friday we do team building and get together with the other class and play games talk about certain things. I work in groups every day in almost all of my classes. I am a student from the midlothian campus retaking BIO 101 for the third time. Last semester, I enrolled for BIO 101 with Prof. Rupa Bandyopadhyay. I did not preform well in her class as my father became injured and after multiple knee surgeries he was unable to work and drive. From that, I ended up moving to his house in Glen Allen to help him around which resulted in me missing classes which prevented me from the coursework. Although I failed this class, from the beginning, before my father's injury, I had actively participated in class sessions and found the way she taught/lectured was very understandable and effective. Over the course of this class I have pieced together many things about my own life that before went unnoticed. I am now able to see things in a bit of a different light. Now that I have been introduced to the realm of psychology I understand some of the reasons for behavior around me. I have learned that there is a reason for most everything and a lot of our behaviors and mental processes can be explained through psychology. Studies have been conducted for many years to try and pinpoint the source of our behavior and it is not something that most people think about every day. Having a better understanding of why we operate the way we do will help me to better understand myself and the others around me.
In college a student should question what it means to be part of a clique. Although they were popular in high school, many students do not belong to cliques in college. In fact, being involved in a clique simply portrays a student as being scared to make new contacts and expand his or her world. In sum, how a person socializes in college can lead to one’s development or downfall. Losing track of goals is the last thing a student wishes to do. How we socialize tells our classmates and future employers who we are. Socialization in college makes us open ourselves to the world, and in so doing, we must assume responsibility for all our choices.
In high school, it seems super fun having the same friends for four years long, in most of the cases they are friends since middle school and that’s when they start calling each other best friends; However, having too many friends in the same class not always is a great idea. Some could be not a problem but sometimes it is a disaster when two or more students know well each other. They can distract the entire class and become a nightmare to the teacher and to the rest of the class. But, what happen when they transcend to a new lifestyle all that friendship that was built in high school comes to an end. After graduation, all students take their own path and that friendship built for years suddenly banished. On the other hand, when young students get to college they have to adapt to a new world. They might not have the same friends but they surely will have better ones with the same goals and levels as theirs own.
If ‘floaters’ could be added to the school the clique system could eventually lessen until there were no cliques but only groups. Groups tend to be more developing with “relationship and communication skills” (“Friends, Cliques and Peer Pressure | Barnardos Ireland.”).
...Some of the concepts we have had to learn include drawing the different elements in a bohr rutherford diagram, balancing chemical equations, types of chemical reactions, and the different types of acids and bases. Overall there were many other things in the unit that were very eye-opening as well, but these four definately helped me as a student have that ‘ah-ha’ moment, and they have definitely helped me learn about chemistry in a more in-depth way, appreciate chemistry and the science behind it a lot more, as well as teaching me something very new things such as how to neutralize Hydrochloric Acid inside of your stomach when it starts to pain. Learning these concepts in the classroom has really opened my eyes to the world in which we live in today, and now personally I will forever hold these memories and knowledge in my mind for when I really need it in my life.
Eventually people find a group they are comfortable with and usually do not leave that particular group. Factors that may drive people to select and stay in certain groups are likely: passion for similar things, similar life goals, and sometimes common hobbies and habits. In my observations there was a group of boys who all liked to vape, so when they went outside another vaper joined them and started chatting. People's level of income even has a major effect as to who some people may sit with. The people spending money on more expensive foods and drinks would often be sitting together.
Why did you choose to meet with the professor of this course? I chose to meet with my general biology instructor, Dr. Carmichael, for several reasons. One was that his class was the one that I had chosen for my five day study plan, so I thought he would be able to advise me on how he recommends his students study for the exam. Anther I decided to meet with him was that he told us from the very first day of class that he is fair man; he has always appeared down to earth and caring, so he did not intimidate me as much as some of my other professors. The final thing that influenced my decision about who to meet with was that I think that out of all of my classes, biology is the class that I struggle with the most.
The others who easily catch on can feel held back by those students. Sometimes these students can get very flustered if the other students do not learn the lesson as fast as they do. Grouping these students will let them learn at their own pace and open the child’s mind for more learning. Having fewer kids in these groups will also offer each child more one on one time with the teacher and also help the shy kids to gain enough confidence to speak up and get the help the need. Those other students who already know the material might laugh or get annoyed if another student asks a question that they already know and think the other student should know too. This can be very hurtful to the child asking the question and be conveyed as bullying. Bullying is a very big problem that a lot of schools face. When a child is being bullied learning can be the least of their worries. Ability grouping can help eliminate some of that bullying. By separating these classrooms into smaller groups there is more room for each child to get to know each other and form a bond preventing bullying from
Some college students regret not socializing more and meeting new friends. Some tends to stick on their own cliques and are afraid or uncomfortable to meet new people.
Several experiments and researches have been conducted that have focused on how people behave in groups. The findings have revealed that groups affect peoples’ attitudes, behavior and perceptions. Groups are essential for personal life, as well as in work life.
I enjoyed the first learning activity of observation and can see this class getting into the mentality of education. I got this same thing from MGMT class and was surprised there too. I knew some about cognitive development prior to this class with the studies I have done, but I can still see the advantages of learning a new perspective.
