College students have to balance work, family, and college activists and any delaying behavior from within can cause an unbalance. This behavior is called procrastinating and it can lead to problems in many areas of a student’s life. College students are the worst hit by this type of behavior because they have many different activities to focus on instead of studying. These activities can cause students to study when they have time which often is usually too short amount of time. There is a time and place to relax and enjoy life, but if students focus on playing around instead of getting their assignments done, college life will be stressful.
Procrastination is when people put other tasks, like clubbing with friends, ahead of completing the project assigned. There are seven categories of procrastination listed by Hoffman and Julie within Stop Procrastinating Now! 10 simple & Successful Steps for Student Success which students may fall within. The first is the “perfectionist procrastinator” where students usually get the project done ahead of time but because of wanting the project to be perfect they turn it in late. The second type is the “relax, it can wait procrastinator” which are students who think they have enough time so they focus on other activates. The problem is that students misjudge how long to wait and end up handing their projects in late. The third is the “fantasizer procrastinator” which are students who think about how their project fits into the big picture. These students turn their project in late because of “ambitious (although unrealistic) dreams pertaining to his goals and thus seldom is able to begin the project” (Hoffman and Julie, 19). ...rs tend to overestimate the degree of unpleasantness of a task” (Lay, 46). Procrastination is a problem that when left unchecked can cause serious problems in every aspect of a person’s life. The solution for students can be as easy as sticking to a goal or as hard as denying themselves a prize when they missed the deadline on a project. The type of solution a person uses depends on what works best for that student, but a schedule to help stay goal positioned never hurt.

Just as they are standing face-to-face with each other, I am standing face-to-face with procrastination. I encounter difficulty managing my time with just about everything I do; I always wait too long. Throughout high school I was never in a hurry to get any of my work done. The work was easy to me, so if I waited until the last minute to do anything, it wasn’t hard for me to finish. I could always take my time to get everything done and still get a good grade in high school. Even if the work was harder and took me a little extra time, my teachers were all very lenient and accepted late work. My high school was very easy and allowed me to get into the bad habit of procrastinating.
Anxiety. Regret. Frustration. Restlessly glancing at the clock, cringing every time I do. Staring at a blinking cursor, waiting for inspiration. Spending a restless night trying to squeeze out something to turn in the next day. This is a process known all too well by me, and most high schoolers in America, one known as: Procrastination. Procrastination is something easily avoided, and yet, seems to be one of the biggest causes for low grades in most students’ lives. It’s a tempting prospect, putting off your responsibilities to do something enjoyable, but it should be avoided at every possibility. Procrastination causes your grades to suffer, causes your mental health to suffer, and causes you to learn bad habits for the future.
Procrastination might seem as a very basic topic to research about, and even though I might not find the answer to what I need to. One of the reasons of why I chose this theme because is something that no one will be more interested than a procrastinator. Being a procrastinator myself, I’m always making excuses to not work or even to study. Another reason is that of many people think that procrastination is the same as laziness. Understanding the difference between these two themes is very hard because many people don’t know the importance of knowing how procrastination starts. Procrastination has been linked to many disorder like; depression, irrational behavior, low self-esteem, where laziness doesn't appear anywhere close. A procrastinator might have one of these negative aspects, and they aren’t aware and go with that definition of procrastination that the society has implanted. Which is procrastinator are lazy people. For adults, this is very hard to assimilate, and to deal with now imagine in high school how hard it can be, even though there you have a lot of help from other adults. Keeping an updated calendar or agenda keep students aware of when an assignment is due. Students can set due dates on the calendar in their phone. If the student does not have or is not allowed to have electronics they can purchase an agenda or calendar for cheap. Some schools supply students with an agenda to make sure they keep up with due dates on major assignments and other work. If students are involved in any extracurricular activities, they should set certain times and dates on when to complete an assignment. It is important to know how to balance out of school activities with school work. Starting their work early and getting ahead is another way students can manage their time to finish the assignment. As soon as students is assigned the assignment they should get started right away. Friends and family members can also help remind one when his or her assignment is almost due, so it is completed on time. When procrastinating one do not learn to discipline themselves therefore their work suffers, and the student get stressed out. As an adult student, it is not easy to manage the demands of work; spouse and children; and the need to set aside time to read, research, write, and complete specified assignments. The biggest complaint conveyed by adult students is that they simply don’t have enough time. The fact is time management is crucial so you don’t lose sight of your goals. Students’ time is a limited resource. Like other limited resources, time can be more or less effectively managed (Britton, 1991, p.405). It is hard to address my perspective of my own procrastination and my ability to learn. Now that I’m older and looking at the facts of where I am now in life, I should be a lot further in my college goals. Many young adults wish someone sat them down early in life and guided them in a wiser direction. A college degree is essential in the career world.

Chances are, if you approach a college student, and ask them about deadlines, the word procrastination will linger in their head for the duration of the conversation. Most students prefer to leave their homework until the last minute which results in a poorly written essay. Throughout high school, I too have learned the hard way that leaving a homework assignment until the night before brings upon the consequences of both a bad grade and a lack of sleep. I harshly learned one day that just by putting the date of the night before the assignment was due, the professor would automatically skim through the assignment and was fully aware of the lack of effort and responsibility of mine in actually thinking ahead and making better decisions. Choi, psychologists, distinguished two types of protracting, they discovered that active procrastination has attainable characteristics that lead to positive personal outcomes (Choi and Moran). These positive personal outcomes are a result of waiting at its finest. People with these adequate dilatory skills have probably learned from their deficient habits in the past that may help everyone know that the view of holding off can change. Writing this essay has changed my view on procrastination slightly, as I can see how it can be good for you. With my siblings, my free time is limited.
It seems that many students do in fact procrastinate and that it negatively affects some. Procrastination is usually due to poor time management skills. That being said, poor time management affects many aspects of life and therefore, students may be having difficulty in the personal lives also due to poor time management. From the survey results, it appeared that females care more about their studies and habits than males do. This can be problematic eventually because going through life and university, you are forced to give value to academics and time and therefore, students need to be taught from now to care more. Most females said that they feel upset if they procrastinate. This can be because their psyche and mind are not at rest during procrastination. Their minds stay on their obligations and their delay even when physically, they are occupied. They become preoccupied occasionally until they complete whatever they are procrastinating. The same can be said for males although 8 out of 10 males said that they do not feel upset. This may mean that many of them do not give value to their obligations or time as they do not care if they procrastinated and therefore do not feel upset or at all
People all procrastinate at one time or another. Procrastination is the practice of delaying work on important tasks in favor of less challenging ones. Chronic procrastinating hinders productivity and affects our state of mind by creating anxiety and stress (Reichelt). As deadlines approach, one often feels frustration and guilt for not starting on a task earlier. We often assume that projects won't take as long to finish as they really will, which often results in a mad scramble to finish the project in the twenty-four hours before the projects deadline. One of the biggest factors contributing to procrastination is the misconception that we need to be inspired or in the mood to work on the task at hand (Reichelt). However, the reality is that if you wait for the “right time” you will most likely wait for an indefinite amount of time and the task will never get completed.
Procrastination is a tendency to postpone, put off, delay, reschedule, take a rain check on, put on ice, hold off, or to defer what is necessary to reach a particular goal.(Roget's 21st Century Thesaurus, Third Edition. Leading most students down a dangerous path to procrastination; that negative impact affect students from their physical health, mental health, and social health.

Schedules are a difficult thing to balance. A person must find the time to complete a number of tasks in a day. A normal adult may have time to get everything done and still have time to spare. The normal college student on the other hand is constantly on the go. College students have busy schedules that include working, studying, and socializing.
Tatiana Malatincova, in her article “The Mystery of ‘Should’: Procrastination, Delay, and Reaction in Academic Settings,” argues that procrastination primarily depends on the individual’s own view of his/her freedom to complete an assignment. Through the Theory of Psychological Reactance, the determination of “trait reactance”, and the three conceptual variables of procrastinating, support is provided to her conclusion. All of these steer towards saying that the magnitude of the assignment merely has no effect on the task delay time, which is questionable. There’s more to procrastination than just simply delaying a task; “procrastination is the lack or deficiency of self-regulation skills” (Yesil 2012).
