Please reply to the following questions/prompts. Remember to be as detailed and descriptive as possible. This section of the application is your chance to signify your level of interest and fit for the RA position. Responses to each question should be at least one paragraph in length, but no more than five paragraphs. 1. Why are you applying for the RA position? What do you hope to gain? I’m applying to the RA position because I’m looking for a job with a short commute. Just kidding. Honestly, the position of Resident Assistant sounds just awesome and an extraordinary opportunity. I’m very passionate about building community. I want to help others feel like Columbia is their “home away from home.” Even though, I’ve only been at Columbia …show more content…
What are the top 3 characteristics of a good RA and why are these characteristics the most important? Personally, I feel as though the top 3 characteristics of a good RA are creativity, the ability to have grace under pressure, and sense of respect. Creativity: One of the more obvious sides of creativity is the ability to create fun arts and crafts. For an RA, this would include creating floor decorations and coming up with community building events for your floor. On the other side, an RA must have a sense of creative problem solving. When dealing with residents who are having an issue, it’s important to be able to come up with a solution to their issues that everyone agrees with. This might sometimes include a creative, “out of the box” idea to make it work. Grace under Pressure: Having grace under pressure and sense of flexibly are important in any leadership positon. For example, if something goes wrong at an event you’ve planned you can choose to break down or you can choose to look for a solution. As a leader, you have people who will look to you to see how you respond. For an RA, something like a fire or some other emergency can put your spirits to the test. Since your residents will be looking to you for leadership, it’s important to keep your head on straight and maintain grace under
I believe that my academic background has prepared me perfectly to be a member of this great organization. While a student at Syracuse University, I had the opportunity
Tell us about yourself and why you decided you wanted to pursue a legislative aide position.
Working with different people is one of things I am excited about being a RA. As I met different people with different cultures, beliefs and worked together in the past, I am certain I know how to interact with them. These experiences taught me how to interact people different from me flexibly, how to withstand pressure and how to use differences as strength. Moreover I have taken several leadership positions before so benefits from those positions would be useful in becoming a RA. A resident assistant should always be caring and protective of his residents. He has to guide them so that they could live in a happy but safe environment. That is what I did when I went to Japan. As I was given the role of leader, I tried to live up to it. So I know the responsibilities of being a leader and how to make decisions for the sake of the team. I think these past experiences would prepare me for this position.
I believe that the role of a Resident Assistant is a dynamic one. On the one hand, the position calls for a positive and approachable individual, of which I believe I am, so that the RA may be able to help his/her residents by giving emotional support so that the resident may better assimilate into college. However, a Resident Assistant must also appear clearly as a leader who
For task two I will be analyzing video under the generalist heading and under the subheading Integrating Mathematics and Science number 142. The video is of a third grade classroom conducting an experiment about different types of soil. They are to test which types absorb more water and which how fast the water goes through the water. The first instructional strategy the teacher mentions changing is that at first she had the groups into more of a homogeneous grouping where the higher achievers were paired with the lower achievers, but the teacher observed that the higher achievers were doing the majority of the work. The teacher decided to make the groups into more of a heterogeneous grouping where the pairs were closer to the same achievement
I am appreciative of everyone that has allowed for me to become the individual I am today. I know that if I did not live in such a welcoming community I would not be the same positive, hard-working, and responsible person I am today. I have dedicated my life to serving others and I try to be a leader in my community. I am ASB Vice-President, I intentionally plan events that are make my school a more welcoming and fun environment. In addition, I volunteer at local events around my city such as The Taste of Edmonds, Kidstock, the Edmonds Library Children’s Summer Program. Through these events, I have met many wonderful people that are devoted to their community and want to bring everyone together despite our differences. My experiences with community service and other leadership positions has allowed for me to understand the people around me better and strengthen my passions such as psychology due to wanting to help people in

For me to be an effective leader, I must first evaluate my strengths. I took the Gallup 2.0 Strength Finder report which showed my strengths in an insight and action planning guide. The results indicated the top five themes for me were input, learner, responsibility, maximizer and arranger. I believe the evaluation offered an accurate assessment of my strengths. The input theme states my mind is like a sponge, soaking up information. As a lifelong learner, the second theme is also, correct. I have a quest for knowledge about things that interest me. I am responsible, in my job and life. As a maximizer, I focus on long term goals and strive toward excellence. As a nurse, working in an environment of change, the arranger strength in my personality allows me to adapt easily and figure out the best way to accomplish tasks (Strengths, 2012).
The calendar on my desk is overtaken by the numerous clubs and activities that I am a part of. As an Executive Board member of both Student Council and National Honor Society, I help plan various volunteer projects, Homecoming, Paws for a Cause, and other events around the school and community. I was also a part of creating a new organization through Student Council called Student Ambassadors. This group helps new and transfer students integrate smoothly into Belleville West by acting as tour guides and mentors, ensuring that they feel comfortable and safe in their new school.
Not many teenagers know what FCCLA is, They think it's just a way to get better at
Becoming an RA will require a few skills I will need to develop, like creativity. I really struggle at being a creative person with being a computer science major. I am good at math, organization, and coding a new program but not at being a creative person but it is something I am constantly working on and trying to better myself in this area. I want to be able to have fun activities to help my residents relax and deal with the stress of college and exam weeks. I want to be able to be creative at ways to get my residents more involved with the GVSU community.
With God’s help the Biblical leaders Ezra and Nehemiah were able to fulfill their roles as leaders in the Jewish community. These men of God were chosen to be leaders to pray for the Israelites, relay Gods commands and encourage the people. As God’s leaders Ezra and Nehemiah carried out their respective duties even if fierce opposition awaited them.
Having this ability can help you connect to residents and show them that you are someone they can trust to talk to. Finally, an RA has many responsibilities. Aside from their position as an RA they have school, family and extracurricular responsibilities. It is important to understand that being an RA is a huge commitment and if someone does not feel as though they have enough time to spend with their duties they should not accept the position. Being able to create balance in your life is vital for being an RA. Other aspects of an RA should include having a good understanding of the Code of Student Conduct, be on good academic standing, and be able to have fun with the job because although you are making important decisions, the job should be a positive experience where you can make friends and have a good time while fulfilling all of the responsibilities they
The term ‘leadership’ has no definition, for it is defined different ways in the minds of people. A leader will ingrain a sense of positivity and necessity towards the set goal using the power of written and spoken word. The qualities of a leader differentiate between between each society.
Successful leaders must be skilled in asking their team members questions that will provide useful answers. As stated “If people aren’t giving you helpful answers to your questions, maybe your asking the wrong questions” (Dennis, 2011, para. 1). Questions are essential in keeping a project on track, and are used to help identify any issues or constraints that could affect the outcome of the project. If a leader fails to ask questions they will not know if the project faces any challenges. If the project is facing a challenge, the number one question to ask is “Can we fix it” (Pink, 2010, para. 4). Leadership and management will be unable to help resolve issues if they don’t that they exist. The only way to know if their project is facing any challenges is simply by asking the right questions.
