We all know when we have worked with a good supervisor, but it can be quite challenging to list what makes a good supervisor when asked, as I sit here and ponder that exact question. When asked what the essential qualities of a supervisor are, un-similar people will have different opinions, based on the different types of work environments they have worked in. No matter the environment or the job, a good supervisor always makes the job a little easier. So, what makes a good supervisor? Is it important to have someone that understands flexibility? A supervisor can be wonderful for different reasons. From personality, to work ethnics, to knowledge of the field. We are all human, it is important to have a boss that understands that we sometimes need flexibility, work expectations should always be clear, and a respectful superintendent. A supervisor who corrects mistakes, communicates and treat employees like they are human. Criticism can be very beneficial, because we all can afford to learn from our mistakes every now and then, but it’s important that it’s done in an appropriate manner. With wonderful supervisors come supervisors that are educating our children. Do you feel it is important that they have different skills? As an educator it is important to show interest in promoting learning, different learning techniques as well as updated knowledge on learning requirements and so forth. Also, a supervisor in the education field must be sensitive to different religious, cultures and beliefs. As an educator it is important not to step on the toes of the children’s parents, as where a supervisor for many other jobs this isn’t always their main concern. So what characteristics do you think a good supervisor should possess?

With that being said, most, if not all of your supervisors will possess similar skills. They may be approached differently, standards may be a little higher for certain environments, but as we have learned, all good supervisors are structured similar. I hope one day to be a successful supervisor like those I have had in the past, to be a successful mentor like most of my teachers have been and one day to even be someone else’s motivation to be a better supervisor. I would like to be the supervisor that possess similar skills, I would want to be held to my highest expectations regardless of the career and finally, I would like to guide others working in early education to feel the same way.
