One example of a psychological stressor that affected my life happened just about three and a half to four years ago when I broke my clavicle while playing hockey. The fracture happened when I was in Amarillo, Texas while practicing with a team that I was trying to make for the next season. They had shown lots of interest in me and I was looking towards the future with optimism. When the break happened I was just about half way through the season and I was told by the doctor that I needed major surgery and wouldn't have been able to finish playing the rest of the season with my teammates. I felt like I had somehow let them down despite the fact that there was no way I could have prevented the injury. It was not my fault and it seemed to happen by fate of some sort. I was now looking forward to a major surgical procedure followed by an extensive recovery. leading up to the surgery I was quite stressed out due to pain and other sorts of emotional distress in terms of hockey. Despite the fact that there was still the opportunity to play for the Texas team next year, I finished off my youth hockey career with broken collarbone. The recovery extended over a 5 month period full of icing, heating, therapy, and trying to cope with stress mentally. I found myself putting myself in positions of where I always had something to do rather than thinking on and on. I decided that personally if I kept telling myself I was gunna come back stronger than before and make that Texas team I would have done it. The positivity and mind set of being focused on my recovery helped me rid of the stress and implement an attitude that helped me all along the way. Needless to say I did not even return to Texas to tryout for that team I chose another team and a different path that I look back on and admire to this
So i have therapy mondays and wednesday. And when i went back that monday my therapist was surprised of how good i’ve gotten, because i was able to move my knee more and bend my knee more than 70%. She told me that it was good but my goal is 120% or more, for me to get to the next step of surgery. So i focused on that, and i was putting in twice as much as work i usually put in. Because the only thing that's on my mind is to get back on the field and work my way to become stronger and better. Also do what i love to do and enjoy playing with my friends and family. That's the only thing i’m striving for is to come back healthy and strong. And not do the same mistake as i did before to put myself in that situation. Finally almost that time for me to receive a phone call from my sergeant to tell me what i should do before i come in for surgery. She told me to not eat or drink once it's 7:00 because i was scheduled to have surgery at 9:30 and also she told me not to put on any lotion on my knees. So i did what she asked me to, and that whole day i been thinking about what is going to happen and would i ever be the same and how would it take for me to come back and be fully healed. So i went to the hospital it was almost time for me to have surgery and i was kind of scared but i was really looking forward to just get it all over with it. After i got done with surgery i was in so much pain that couldn’t move at all. Because if i even tried to move my leg that i would be in so much pain that i have to drink my pain killers. Once i got home i was in so much pain that i didn’t sleep for a whole week straight. But then i started getting used to sleeping without a problem or pain. But my doctor would always called me and told me what to do or if i had any problem to just give her a call. Then i asked her the next day when i could start walking and stuff. She
You may be broken now, but if you heal correctly, you could come back better than you were before. The most important outcome for me is that my patients have gotten the best care they could have received and they have recovered to the fullest extent and for my patients I would like them to know that their injury does not define them, it is what happens after that that matters the most. The methods that I would want to use would be pushing my clients to always work hard for what they want to achieve; Granted, there are different injuries so each one will be handled in a different way. For example, if a client comes in with a torn ligament in their arm, it is not going to be an easy process for them. My job just does not involve making sure my clients heal, but also motivating them not to give up and to always see the brighter side of their injury.
“You need surgery.” Just a few weeks before a national basketball tournament, these words would change my life forever. Basketball is my true passion that is a part of who I am. Unfortunately, I experienced failure at meeting my athletic aspirations, due to an injury. Although my particular injury was out of my control, I constantly felt ashamed that I could not completely fulfill my athletic goals as I had hoped. The end result may not be visible when it first takes place, but the process of a recovery can be extremely educational. You see, I was provided the opportunity of job shadowing firsthand the fields of athletic training and physical therapy due to a knee injury. According to the American Institute of Stress, stress can be defined as an individual’s response, physical, mental or emotional, to an event that causes a demand for change (Selye, 1936). For athletes, that demand for change can be caused by an injury, which ultimately can have a significant impact on overall stress levels. While a physical injury can cause psychological stress, mental trauma can similarly affect an athlete physically. An athlete’s psychological stability has a great affect on an athlete’s susceptibility to pain and can alter the response to and recovery from an injury (Ahern, 1997).
For instance, i had bad habits, like not sleeping enough or planning terribly my studying for an exam and also high anxiety. Especially nowdays,stress is apparent in our everyday lives. It can come down hard on us sometimes, or not so bad. Psychology explains us why stress happens or how to handle it. When it comes to me, cannot say i am not stressed anymore since i started studying psychology. But i can say that i am now familiar with what it really is and know how to handle it, for example with breathing exercises. I have understood why too much stress can harm, the different types of stress, and i can say for sure that before i got to have a taste of this study it was a lot harder to understand these

A stressor, as defined by Potter, Perry, Stockert, and Hall (2013), is any kind of event or situation that a person encounters in their environment that requires him or her to change and adapt. The first section of the book titled “Life in the Jungle” taught me the history of stress and lots of other things about it. Stress, I learned, is a feeling you get from everyday problems and challenges. When you get the depressed feeling its when you have reached your limit of internal pressure. Internal pressure simply is just the amount of pressure and stresses you can handle. Stress is not something to be avoided. Everyone feels stressed from time to time and it depends on people that may feel stress in different ways. Not all stress is bad but it depends on how peoples take it. The words “stress” is something all of us have experienced but it seems that there are many different definitions used by psychologist, medics, management consultants or others. Psychologists describe stress as “demands of life” which pointed out as “stressors” and stress is the cause of the worn out tissue of our body (Meenakshisundaram, 2012, p.101). Stress can be divided into four types which are eustress, acute stress, episodic acute stress and chronic stress (illustrated in Figure 1).
Stress may play a causal role in a wide variety of mental disorders. Some of the mental disorders in which stress appears to have a causal role are anxiety disorders, mood disorders, and substance-related disorders.
The most stressful experience for me started the end of the 2015 spring semester and ended towards the middle of July. During that time so much happened and it took a toll on me. In February my Grandma was diagnosed with cancer but I didn’t find out until the beginning of April. She didn’t want me any of us to worry so she told my aunt not to tell us. During that time I was working and trying to help my mom with the bills and I was in school online. I was also trying to live a normal life of a 20 year old. Eventually it all started to take a toll on me. I started to miss homework due dates. I didn’t have the time to study so I started to make low grades on exams and quizzes. Even though I was trying to save money, I always ended up spending it or having to give it to my mom to help her with the bills.
Stress is defined as “any circumstance that threatens or is perceived to threaten one’s well-being and thereby tax one’s coping abilities” (Weiten & Lloyd, 2006, p. 72). Stress is a natural event that exists literally in all areas of one’s life. It can be embedded in the environment, culture, or perception of an event or idea. Stress is a constant burden, and can be detrimental to one’s physical and mental health. However, stress can also provide beneficial effects; it can satisfy one’s need for stimulation and challenge, promote personal growth, and can provide an individual with the tools to cope with, and be less affected by tomorrow’s stress (Weiten & Lloyd, 2006, p. 93).
