It’s amazing how a horrific and negative life changing event can encourage and guide you in the path of your future. The end result may not be visible when it first takes place, but the process of a recovery can be extremely educational. You see, I was provided the opportunity of job shadowing firsthand the fields of athletic training and physical therapy due to a knee injury. I believe the majority of people would consider a severely damaged knee a dramatic setback in life. I was able to find the silver lining during the recovery. I’ve always been the type of person that truly enjoys athletics and have participated in nearly all sports offered to me. I started playing sports in elementary with club softball and basketball. As I entered my middle and high school years I was able to add the school sanctioned sports to my list of activities. This afforded me the opportunity of competing in volleyball, basketball, golf, track and softball. The camaraderie and life lessons of sports seemed invaluable to me. severely damaged knee. I found out that I would require surgery to repair my MPFL, MCL and meniscus. My surgeon explained to me that the notorious ACL tear would have been an easier and faster recovery, although I happened to be nervous I felt that I emerged up for the challenge. Surgery turns out to be a wonderful success and provides me with a smooth transition into the next phase of recovery know as physical therapy.
Although therapy deemed very challenging, I’m thoroughly engrossed in watching the inner workings of the trainer building me to be strong again. During the rebuilding process I’m able to absorb several factors of how the human body works as well as notice the psychology required to strengthen a patient. Hard to admit, but during the recovery time the onset of struggling to maintain a positive attitude can become prevalent. Being sidelined from sports weighed on my psyche and negatively affected my grades as well as daily demeanor. This is where the mind strengthening from the trainer and having a strong faith truly came into
play. Once heading towards completion of therapy the positive reinforcement and attitude from the trainer becomes prevalent in my attitude and in everyday life. Strong mentally, physically and being able to compete in sports again has provided a plethora of experiences. I’ve been able to attain a state championship in softball, compete at a high level in volleyball as well as gain a confidence in academics to achieve high marks. I view the rewards and gratification from this field of work to be something that I desire and would truly appreciate. I’m indebted to this profession and anticipate the day that I can begin to repay my debt of gratitude. I look forward to attaining the education required to pursue the field of my dreams and be afforded the opportunity to pass on what was provided to me.
You are going to want to give up, you are gonna get impatient but it is vital that you listen to what you are told. The old saying, “Minor setback major comeback” is very relevant to the patients going through any kind of injury. You may be broken now, but if you heal correctly you could come back better than you were before. The most important outcome for me is that my patients have gotten the best care they could have received and they have recovered to the fullest extent and for my patients I would like them to know that their injury does not define them, it is what happens after that matters the most. The methods that I would want to use would be pushing my clients to always work hard for what they want to achieve; Granted, there are different injuries so each one will be handled in a different way. For example, if a client comes in with a torn ligament in their arm it is not going to be an easy process for them. My job just does not involve making sure my clients heal, but also motivating them not give up and to always see the brighter side of their injury. I will know that I have accomplished all of my patients’ goals when they are healthy and ready to be active again. Giving someone a second chance and watching them make the most out of it is rewarding enough. As long as I did my duties as an Athletic Trainer, I would feel accomplished
Overcoming an addiction to alcohol can be a long and bumpy road. Many people feel that it is impossible to overcome an alcohol addiction. Many people feel that is it easier to be an addict than to be a recovering addict. However, recovering from alcoholism is possible if one is ready to seek the help and support they need on their road to recovery. I’m actually kind of shocked I could write about recovery because it is a topic with a special meaning to myself. But, I found it easier to write about my own experience with a negative event this time, and I believe it is because I grew as a writer. I saw the value the personal testimony adds to a piece, and thus I could add my own story.
Neither my parents nor I had that desire for myself; therefore not one sport was more central than the other. Academic success stood as the most valuable compared to athletic success. That environment placed less pressure for me to train with greater intensity and focus when it came to competitive sports. Sports were extra-curricular activities as opposed to a full-time job and the pathway to the subsequent level. I absolutely benefitted from playing multiple sports throughout my youth. I have participated in soccer, basketball, football, track & field, wrestling, and even taekwondo. Competing in all these sports developed me into a better athlete and enhanced my fundamental movement skills that are necessary for all sports. In addition, it gave me multiple perspectives that I might not have had otherwise. This improved my ability to be a teammate and instilled in me a more competitive nature. Although different sports brought different demands, the growth of confidence remained the same. I never suffered from burnout during my youth, nor did I detest my experience. Ultimately, participating in multiple sports gave me time to decide where my passion lied and what I preferred to play. I am one of an estimated 7.8 million students who play sports while attending high school (Koebler). I have been playing softball since 4th grade and before that, my father played baseball for the Sobieski Skis. He is an impressive athlete and taught me everything I know about being competitive. By coaching me, he has pushed me to a profuse number of successful achievements. Throughout my life, sports have been the greatest influence in teaching me an abundant amount of lessons, such as sportsmanship, commitment, and leadership.
The way the Tracy handled, and interacted with the patient completely impressed me, and from that day onward, I was certain that physical therapy was the career for me. The aspect of physical therapy that I enjoy the most is working with different patients on rehabbing their injury. With every new patient that walk through the door, come s a exciting new challenge for me to help the patient work to get back to their physical ability they were at before their injury. The aspect of physical therapy that I’m the most worried about is the amount of time I have to spend in college to obtain my degree. Although I don’t mind spending a few extra years in college, in the back of my mind it still worries me a little bit. I would participate in almost anything growing up if it had to do with athletics. I idolized the idea of recreation and competition. When I was in middle school, I discovered two unusual sports that I instantly fell in love with. Wakeboarding and snowboarding were uncommon among my peers and appeared exotic to them.
