Elsewhere, I wrote that pomegranates are befitting fruits to eat on Halloween. The tiny juicy sacs surrounding the seeds resemble bloody teeth. You have to pry the fruit apart with great care to get to the juice sacs without breaking them. If you rush through and/or use too much force peeling off the white pith and membrane, you will get squirted all over and won’t need more makeup to look vampirish. Eating pomegranates are a great time-killer. You can easily put in two hours worth of time on one single pomegranate. So watch out for those impatient trick-or-treaters who might break down your door while you’re plodding through the peeling process!
Recently, we fell in love with pomelos. Like pomegranates, you need to cut enough off of the top
Late autumn has arrived and with it comes the dark magic of Halloween--and, of course, the
Durian fruit. When people ask me how I feel about my Vietnamese culture, the first thing that comes to mind is durian fruit. Unlike the strawberries or cherries found at Safeway, durian fruit at first glance does not even look edible. The entire fruit resembles a dirty old football, except that durian weighs nearly three pounds. One-inch spikes and a tough brown outer peel cover the fruit, giving it an intimidating look. Inside, yellow, kidney-shaped pieces line the peel like orange slices. As a child, I hated durian. I refused to even taste it. Later on, when I was older, my mother bribed me with two dollars to try the meaty flesh. I fell in love with the fruit instantly. Its heavenly aroma tantalized my olfactory senses. The fleshy kidney-shaped parts felt as smooth as butter inside my mouth.
... participants did not wear crowns or eat pomegranate seeds that had touched the ground because Persephone had been stolen while gathering flowers, and because she had eaten the pomegranate seeds in the underworld (Foley, 72/Taylor 1995).
When I learned that I would have to do my ethnographic report on what I did during Halloween, I was worried because I live in Turnpike and the most excitement that happens in turnpike is the sound of the garbage truck when it comes to pick up the Wednesday trash. Fortunately something did happen to me and I realized I would not have to write a boring paper of how I woke up and just stayed in my room the whole day. Well the day started off with me waking up and walking to the bathroom to take a shower, as soon as the turned the water on I realized I had left my shower and rather than turning off my shower I stayed in because the warmth of the hot water was too seductive for me to get out and get my towel. In the shower I had my usual thoughts about life, death, and comebacks to old arguments. Afterword I got out of my shower and reached for my toothbrush, which was located in a cupboard behind the toilet, but I grabbed at it too quickly and it fell in the toilet. I stood over my toilet for about five minutes just staring at my toothbrush in the toilet not believing what just happened, after that I started blaming myself for being too impatient. When I was done feeling sorry for myself I went into my room in search of another toothbrush but unluckily I couldn’t find one, so I had to go walk to the local store at around 7:30 in search of a toothbrush. While searching for a replacement toothbrush I realized that not that many people were in the store, I had always thought that stores were busiest in the morning and evening but apparently that’s not true. Once I got my new toothbrush I finished brushing, got dressed and went to catch the 11 to the Transit Center.
At the pomegranate tree they would enjoy eating fruit, climbing the tree, reading books, as well as engaging in other playful activities. This would eventually lead to carving into the tree, “Amir and Hassan, the sultans of Kabul” (Hosseini 27). This action represented the boys formally claiming the tree and making it their own. Unfortunately, as events take a turn for the worse, the happiness and innocence associated with the tree diminish. Stunned and distraught after Hassan is raped, the boys return to the tree, being it serves as their place of comfort.. The previous feelings associated with the tree vanish due to Amir’s actions during the rape. Amir, who feels angry and frustrated, throws pomegranates at Hassan, in an attempt to get a reaction out of him. Amir cannot handle the guilt from Hassan’s rape and wants to receive retaliation from Hassan for his own selfish reasons. After this tragic event, Hassan and Amir’s childhood bond comes to an end. It's a tradition for my sister and I to make our Halloween costumes together and carve pumpkins - you know, the whole nine yards. Sometimes our dad would help, but usually it was just us and the dog outside. We would constantly be covered in some kind of paint or dye, whether it be fake blood, face paint, fabric paint, or some years even tea. (We got creative.) The costumes ended up being cool,
...with rice or boiled plantain, and meat or fish grilled with crushed pumpkin seeds and wrapped in huge leaves.
From lattes to chap stick and even pizza, the pumpkin spice craze has hit an all-time high this fall. But long before there was pumpkin pie cheerios and pumpkin spice marshmallows, the pumpkin has been a fall tradition for over 5,000 years.
Soak some raisins in water overnight and then put them in a cup of cold milk for half an hour. Chew it.
A pomegranate tree is like friendship. When cared for, both a pomegranate tree and a friendship can flourish. If a pomegranate tree or a friendship isn’t cared for anymore, it will slowly die out. Pomegranates symbolizes abundance and generosity (Panek). The pomegranate tree in The Kite Runner symbolizes Hassan and Amir’s relationship. The pomegranate tree is significant because Amir and Hassan’s good times and bad times take place by the tree. As Amir and Hassan’s relationship changes through the novel, so does the pomegranate tree.
Late winter around December my grandmother (Eloisa) and aunt (Chavela) usually visit California from Washington State for Christmas and New Year’s Eve. It’s very exciting when all my family gets together and meets up at my other aunt (Rosalba’s) house not only because we’re all together but because we all know my grandma and aunt from are going to feed us good. Today I will be sharing with all of you, Pozole which represents my Mexican heritage. First, I will present a brief history of the Mexican dish pozole and second, some beloved memories of my grandmother and aunt making pozole and making sure my whole family ate until we couldn’t anymore.
The food on Day of the Dead and Halloween is very different. The people who celebrate Day of the Dead eat pan de muerto(bread of the dead). They also eat sugar skulls with the people that died names on them. The people who celebrate Halloween in the modern days have candy and other Halloween themed foods. In the Celts times poor people would go door to door and beg for money and food.
Similar to tomato, pumpkin and pepper, watermelon is a fruit. It has a large, oblong fruit that is noted for its sweet and refreshing qualities.
Most people are accustomed to eating an apple, I would surprised if there’s a single person on earth who has never been introduced to apple; it’s perhaps the most common fruit throughout the world. Many places offers variety of apples that are delicious yet economically affordable. So the next time you eat one just stop and think for a moment how underrated they are and that bite your about to take could’ve possibly delayed the inevitable trip to the doctors and perhaps, the dentist.
In seedless watermelons, rudimentary seed structures form but remain small, soft, white, tasteless and undeveloped tiny seed coats that are eaten virtually undetected along with the flesh of the melon. Seed production for these seedless types is an extremely labor intensive process that makes the seeds relatively expensive. Because germination of these types is often less vigorous than normal types, it is recommended that they be started in peat pots or other transplantable containers. Here the germinating conditions can be closely controlled. Once transplanted, cultivation is similar to that for regular watermelons.
