An apple a day keeps the doctor away is a statement that everyone is pretty familiar with. But what exactly does an apple provide for our body that makes this statement true? As I look through my refrigerator hoping something in there would inspire me to finally find a topic to write about, I realized just how much money I spend eating fruit. After breakfast, I grab an apple to eat on my way to work. After coming home from work and before going to the gym I reach for an apple. There’s something about an apple that catches my attention and I gravitate towards them when browsing for something to eat. Even though I consider myself a healthy eater, most people including myself consume food without the full knowledge of the benefits or harm it does to our body. Choosing to write about apples seemed rather simplistic and mundane, but the fact of matter is I don’t know the full extent of what makes an apple healthy. Add to that why someone chose an apple to create a statement of how it can keep doctors away. Surely that statement was made as a metaphor for eating healthy and having a healthy lifestyle but why chose an apple when you have many options of fruit to pick from? I was determined to find out.
I had to make this research somewhat fun for me, especially when my topic focused on apples and not some awesome exotic fruit that destroys tumors and helps heal the world. To begin, I asked my boss, coworkers, family members and a couple of strangers what it is about an apple that keeps the doctors away. At first they thought I was perpetuating a ruse as I held an old fashion recorder while they gave an answer but once I told them it was for a school project, they became willing participants. After reviewing some of the answers to my qu...

... minimize tooth decay by reducing the levels of bacteria. According to Webmd, “Other food choices include firm/crunchy fruits (for example, apples and pears) and vegetables. These foods have a high water content, which dilutes the effects of the sugars they contain, and stimulate the flow of saliva (which helps protect against decay by washing away food particles and buffering acid).”
Most people are accustomed to eating an apple, I would surprised if there’s a single person on earth who has never been introduced to apple; it’s perhaps the most common fruit throughout the world. Many places offers variety of apples that are delicious yet economically affordable. So the next time you eat one just stop and think for a moment how underrated they are and that bite your about to take could’ve possibly delayed the inevitable trip to the doctors and perhaps, the dentist.
apples and pears and peaches were very fresh- and very deadly, their insides injected with
There are many different beliefs about the proper way to eat healthy. People are often mislead and live unhealthy lifestyles as a result. Both Mary Maxfield and Michael Pollan explain their own beliefs on what a healthy diet is and how to live a healthy lifestyle. In the essay, “Escape from the Western diet” Michael Pollan writes about the flaws of the western diet and how we can correct these problems to become healthier. In the essay, “Food as Thought: Resisting the Moralization of Eating”, Mary Maxfield criticizes Michael Pollan’s essay about eating healthy, and explains her own theory on how to be healthy. She believes that Pollan is contradicting himself and that what he is stating is false. Mary Maxfield ponders the
For those that have bad habits with cigarettes, Tobacco Cessation Counseling is available. Cigarettes cause tooth loss, rotting, and surface stains; hygienist make sure to pass this information to the patient and help them to understand that quitting is the best option if they want to keep their teeth. As said before, a hygienist informs the patient on what foods to avoid. Nutritional Counseling is provided if a hygienist believes there is danger with a patients teeth such as diseases. (Dental Hygiene Clinic) Any foods with high acidity is something a dental hygienist would recommend avoiding. For example, apples, hard candies, popcorn, diet sodas, and salad dressing. Enamel is the hardest structure in the human body. It’s even harder than bones. When the enamel is exposed to acid, it wears down and erodes. This is how tooth erosion and decay happens. They will educate the patient with what foods to replace the bad ones with. Although, a dentist is who performs the restorations, a hygienist can still inform what will happen. Because of the fact that hygienists usually see patients before the dentist, they will give feedback to the dentist and recommend restorations in the mouth. They specialize in providing clinical and educational services (Sealy Dental Center) so they are very useful to dentists. When a patient has missing, chipped, or sharpened teeth, a restoration is done to replace the originals. Some examples
Humans only get one set of adult teeth after losing all of their primary teeth therefore, it is important to take care of them. “Dental caries: Strategies to control this preventable disease” is an article written by Rugg-Gunn, Andrew presents several reasons why dental decay is a widespread disease. Rugg-Gunn cites that the main cause of dental decay is lack of fluoride, poor diet, bacteria from plaque, and sugars. Based on this evidence, Rugg-Gunn concludes that “dental caries can be prevented” (Rugg-Gunn128), but there is no evidence of stopping the disease from happening. While Rugg-Gunn raises a revolving problem around the world with human oral decay he however, does not have a good approach on what decay really is.
Here are the things that you can do besides daily brushing and flossing to stop tooth decay.
Have you ever stopped and asked yourself: am I really eating healthy? Recently, I’ve come to the realization of what I’m eating on a daily basis isn’t entirely healthy for me. Michael Pollan, who is author of the book The Omnivore’s Dilemma, has opened my mind. While reading the first couple of chapters of The Omnivore’s Dilemma, I’ve realized that I don’t know much about the food that I am eating. For example, I didn’t know that farmers not only feed their animals, corn but they also feed them antibiotics (Walsh 34). In The Omnivore’s Dilemma, Pollan makes a strange statement, “You are what what you eat eats, too” (Pollan 84). Pollan continuously emphasizes this remark through various examples, and he’s right because strangely enough the food
Children are often sweet and adorable, but many times they may be eating too many sweets. According to the Channel Four News, it has been shown that the number one disease in children is the reoccurrence of caries, also known as cavities. Could it be too many sweets or could it be the lack of flossing and brushing teeth? For instance, many children go to bed or wake up without brushing their teeth and go throughout the day eating all sorts of food and candy. The result of eating and not brushing could lead to plaque build up and decaying of teeth. This leaves a child extremely unhappy and in excruciating pain. So who is going to fix this pain? Who is going to help prevent decay in millions of people’s mouths? Today, the world is lucky to have a well-studied field of dentistry.. Dentistry has much history, various specialties, advancements, and an irresistible salary.
Pediatric Dentists promote dental health of children as well as serve as education resources for parents. Healthy teeth are the results of healthy eating. “Like the rest of the body, the teeth, bones and the soft tissues of the mouth need a well-balanced diet. Children should eat a variety of foods from the five major food groups. Most snacks that children eat can lead to cavity formation. The more frequently a child snacks, the greater the chances for tooth decay.” (dentist4kid.com, 2014). Choose nutritious foods such as vegetables, low fat yogurt, and low fat cheese, if your child must snack, which are healthier and better for children’s teeth.
Despite the mineralized form of your teeth, you still need to protect your tooth’s enamel from the foods you eat. Remember, all food is not good food, especially, when it comes to your teeth. Acidic foods like soda, and caffeine can eat away at the enamel on your teeth, leaving your teeth vulnerable to tooth decay, and cavities. Enamel forms a protective shield on the outer and inner layer of your teeth, protecting
Through conquest and exploration, apples were spread when Romans conquered England and when Spaniards brought them to Mexico and South America. It wasn’t until the mid 1600’s that the Pilgrims cultivated them in Massachusetts. It is believed that John Endecott, an early governor, was the first to bring an apple tree to North America, and the first orchard was planted on Beacon Hill by a clergyman named William Blaxton. It is Blaxton who is credited for growing the first named apple, the Yellow Sweeting. Once apples were established in New England, they played an active role in everyday life. As a fruit which was easily stored through the winter, as well as being very beneficial to settlers’ health, apples were a main staple in early settlers’ diets. Despite the fact that apples were not initially from North America, and have been growing disease-free for centuries in their native habitats, the early settlers found that the long, hot summers and cold winters of New England grew apples unlike anywhere else in the world. New England apples are known not only for their unique blend of tart and sweet flavors, but also for their size and freshness.

Having a healthy body can contribute to an individual’s overall well being and happiness. In the reading about virtue and health by Gary Ferngren, we learn about the meaning of ‘virtue’ in the ancient world which referred to the “quality or proficiency of men…” instead of in reference to moral behavior (Ferngren 176). The Greeks considered health to be essential to one’s virtue. Maintaining a healthy diet will help an individual perform better. Personally, I find that healthy habits are beneficial and uplifting for the soul. Those days when I eat right and am active, I am in high spirits, I feel good, and I am more motivated to achieve things. According to new US dietary guidelines, most Americans “don’t get enough health-enhancing and disease-preventing nutrients” which is a major problem that is not only physically detrimental, but also discouraging in terms of one’s mental health (Mayo Clinic Staff, “New dietary guidelines” 3). When I feel healthy on the inside, I have greater self-esteem and confidence and this is really important when it comes to how others view themselves or they potential. It also helps to maintain a positive outlook on
Proper nutrition is one of the most essential elements to being healthy and living a long life. People deal with food every day, and food has been a part of life since the beginning of civilization. What we eat becomes our diet, and our diet plays a major role in deciding how healthy we are and how well our body functions. Without proper diet, our body cannot carry out the functions it needs to perform. Most people have some common knowledge on what is good and what is bad for the human body to consume. Fruits, vegetables, nuts, and grains are some common items people think of when they think of healthy foods. However, it is not enough just to know what foods are good for your body, it is also important to understand why certain foods are good for you and what they do to help the body function.
