Picture yourself walking into your local mechanic’s auto repair shop. As you approach it, you see tires in random places, there’s muffler hanging awkwardly on a shelf next to a car battery and you can’t distinguish between costumers and mechanics besides the fact that the person with oil spots on his clothes make for a clear give away. What’s your general impression? Do you think you feel comfortable leaving your car with this shop? I know I wouldn’t. My name is Art Garcia, today I will be telling you about the Five S step process of Lean manufacturing and how it can be applied to everything from organizations such as this local business or military unit or office.
The Five S step process is a tool that can help save time, money and improve efficiency in most cases if used properly. The Five S’s are Sort, Straighten, Shine, Standardize and Sustain.

start by removing everything out. For example if you wanted to apply these steps to a company that work place, you would take everything thing out until it was completely empty. Then when you have it all removed, you separate it. Furniture would be placed in one area. Equipment like computers and phones in another followed by supplies, etc. You could even do this to the employees you have by reviewing the roster and separating by department or roles. After they are separated, determine what you need and what is just extra. Once you have done that you can proceed to the next step. Now that it is determined that you are only using what is needed you find a place or time for everything. You straighten it all out. If it’s supplies you label the shelf or cabinet where the item belongs and if its personnel you put up a sign for work spaces or offices. By providing designated locations for things, you will be able to see when something is missing or not functioning as required. Another thing to keep in mind when you decide where things will be, make sure that they are in a spot that makes sense. For example, if you were serving drinks it would make sense to place the cups next to the drink dispenser instead of across the room. Once everything is in its designated place, it should be clean and aesthetically pleasing. The best thing to do now, during the Shine step is clean it up. Keep things in order and make those tweaks to improve it. Figure out what is working, what isn’t exactly placed in the best spot as originally thought would be the best. You’ll want to do this for a while before you go on to the next step. Once things have settled into a groove that’s when you go on. Standardize by putting the rules and guidelines on paper.
As you start to set these standards revisit the first three steps. Take a look at the things that you could still remove; make sure things are in the optimal place and simply clean it all up. At that point you should be ready to set the parameters for how things will function. The intent of this step is to let others know that its not okay to revert to how things were before you started the process.
Then the last part of this process is to Sustain. Enforce the guidelines set, keep things and people accountable, and follow up. Make sure that the choices made work, that your organization is working at its optimal level. And periodically revisit the first few steps and make the changes needed to keep moving forward.
In conclusion, if the 5S process is followed then whatever it is applied to will be a faster, more efficient way of accomplishing any task. It will help a group reach a common goal, keep them moving in the right direction and cultivate a culture of forward style

The Shewhart Cycle is a process by which a leader can gain and maintain control of essential aspects of a project as it progresses from conception through completion. Developed by Dr. Walter Shewhart, the process consists of four distinct steps. Though it has a beginning, the process continues to loop and repeat itself until the end of the project. There are four steps in the process. They are plan, do, check, and act. During planning, the leader determines the requirements for success as well as the obstacles which may be encountered along the way. All essential information is gathered and organized into tasks and timelines. The “Do” step is where action is taken on the tasks identified earlier. Special monitoring during this step will ensure that the tasks are understood, properly resourced, and accomplished. Through checking, the leader can ensure that performance is meeting standards and that adjustments can be made as appropriate. Act, or execute in accordance to the plan. If it is a good plan and carefully monitored, the project should go smoothly. (Clark, 2014).

For organizations who have committed to invest and deploy quality systems improvement programs, it is a huge task for every member who is a part of the transformation.
