Healthy Thanksgiving - Enjoy the holiday without ruining your diet
Thanksgiving is the time to eat and be merry. Never mind about your diet. No? Actually, you can still eat and be merry on Thanksgiving without ditching your diet.
First, let’s look at the main components of a Thanksgiving feast. There’s the turkey. Can we skip the turkey? Some people do. They have something else called a tofurky. That’s a turkey lookalike made from tofu. Is the tofurky really better for your diet than the traditional turkey? According to some nutritionists, the difference is not significant.
Get the right turkey
In the first place, as a meat, turkey is good for you. It is lean meat with little fat. Turkey is the meat of choice for some bodybuilders because it gives them lots of protein without too much fat. There are actually two kinds of turkey meat – the white meat and the dark meat. The white meat is basically the meat from the breast. The dark

The stuffing. Yes, that’s a great source of calories. Bread and pork makes up a good part of the traditional stuffing. The bread is a carbohydrate. The pork is meat and lots of fat. Not exactly the best combination. So what’s the healthier alternative? Try using fruits and herbs for the stuffing instead. There’s a tasty recipe using apples with various herbs. There’s some bread in the recipe, too. You can improve that by using whole wheat bread. Whole wheat bread has got lots more fiber and vitamins than white bread which is actually a food stripped of a lot of nutrients for the sake of looks and taste.
Besides the turkey, there will be side dishes. Some people laden the table with side dishes made up of more meat dishes. Not a good idea for healthy eating. Cook side dishes made up of vegetables. There are many types of vegetables with different colors, tastes and textures to add a lot of variety to the table fare. Think of ways to combine green kale with white cauliflower and red
In her article, “Sweet, Sour, and Resentful,” Firoozeh Dumas directs us through on how her mom readies a feast. She gives us detailed description on how her mother cooks the food for the guests by starting out grocery shopping until the part that the food is ready to be served. She writes about how because of their Iranian traditions they have to prepare a Persian feast for their newcomer friends and family, which brought joy to everyone, but her mother. Yet, we can see that she is trying to make sense to it all, every weekend they have guests over since the Iran’s Revolution started. Vitally, traditions stay great just when they convey satisfaction to the individuals celebrating those traditions. Also, the food that we choose tends to be based upon our culture, economic and social aspects. I agree with her even though traditions within various cultures are very different, but they all are supposed to do one thing that is bring everyone closer to each other, and bring happiness. However, that’s not always the case, especially in this article.
When the great holiday of Thanksgiving comes to mind, most people think of becoming total gluttons and gorging themselves with a seemingly unending amount of food. Others might think of the time spent with family and friends. The whole basis of the holiday is family togetherness, fellowship, and thankfulness for blessings received during the previous year.
American food culture is a contest with the purpose of determining who can have the best meal. This contest is apparent when we share our meals through social media, and treat culinary art as a profession to create beautiful plates. As a culture, we are very accepting of forgone foods, and prefer meals we don 't normally see in our household over something we are accustomed to eating. From personal experience, when I would go out and eat with friends, we would always go
Food is an important part of Thanksgiving. One similarity I have with people is that we eat green beans and mashed potatoes. Next, I share having corn and stuffing with a little bit of peers. Lastly, I share having cranberry sauce and mac and cheese with a couple of my classmates.
No matter what time of year it is and a turkey is roasted to perfection it always taste better with homemade gravy. Canned or jarred gravy may be easier to deal with, but it isn’t a match for a gravy boat filled with homemade gravy using the turkey drippings to flavor the sauce that will be poured over slices of turkey on everyone’s plates.
The wild turkey has between 5,000 and 6,000 feathers that cover almost the entire body of an adult turkey in patterns called feather tracts. These feathers provide a variety of survival functions for the wild turkey such as insulation, flight, and advertisement for reproduction. The amount of feathers and the different type of feathers allow it to stay dry and warm while also allowing it to fly. Unlike its domesticated counterpart, who is to large and heavy to fly, wild turkeys can fly up to 55 mph according to NWTF.org (3). Not only can they fly, but they hav...
“If the protecting of our borders requires the incarceration of babies, the sexual abuse of children, the rape of women and the murder of men, then we are of all nations the most depraved.” This emotive statement from a man of the church, Father Rod Bower, touches a nerve with many of Australians. It is an acid test on our national consciousness. The shock of disturbed beliefs pushes us to reassess the foundation of our values.
I take the turkey and set it on the counter. Then I grab the Buttermilk White bread, freshly made by my mom. She’s like Martha Stewart, you know. She grows the wheat herself. She uses some kind of mill we have in the back yard to grind it into flour. We have a cow. She milked it herself. Then she made the buttermilk to put into the bread. Anyway, that’s off the subject.
As Thanksgiving approaches, most families begin preparing for the big feast. For most, this can be a stressful time. The anticipation of friends and family coming together can become overwhelming at times. Perhaps even more stressful, is the thought of cooking that perfect dinner. Traditionally prepared as the main dish, the turkey can be the turning point of a great or poor Thanksgiving. Much easier said than done, cooking the ideal plump and juicy turkey is by no means a simple and effortless task. Nevertheless, especially the for the first time turkey-cooker, having the right cooking appliances and general understanding on the art of preparing a turkey could make this seemingly daunting task into an enjoyable and educational experience.
Eleanor Goldberg seems to have written this article to spread attention on how Thanksgiving in America contributes to the global problem of food waste and provides some simple to do choices that are able to help minimize this problem. Eleanor is undoubtedly against this massive waste of food that takes place every year.
When chickens get a taste of blood they won’t stop pecking until the other is dead, so when they are kept in such close confinements, they kill each other. About 238 million turkeys are raised in the U.S. for meat annually, most of these being raised on a factory farm. On factory farms turkeys are housed in groups on the floor of a long shed where there is no fresh air, sunlight, or pasture. This causes them to breathe in dangerously high amounts of ammonia caused by their own
Today’s medical experts say that avoiding meat helps you avoid saturated fat. They have found out from studies that women who eat meat daily have a fifty percent greater risk of developing heart disease than vegetarian women and a sixty-eight percent greater risk in men (staff writer). People may not know about serious diseases meat can cause such as, mad cow disease and foot-and-mouth disease. In the September 1999 issue of the Emerging Infectious Diseases, approximately 76 million food-borne illnesses- resulting in 325,000 hospitalizations and 5,000 deaths occur in the United States each year from improperly cooked or diseased meat (Licher). That is a lot of fun!
Most people use the same justification when it comes to eating wholesome and healthier foods. They always say that they cannot afford it, or that they don’t have the energy to cook or prepare food for the week. Well, if we have the energy to eat out six times a week, or if we can afford to spend money on fast food every day, we can easily prepare meals and eat healthy. Firstly, you want to eat lean proteins and make these a huge part of your every day diet. These lean proteins are best, because they make up most of our caloric intake and they help us get in shape. Items such as chicken breast, tilapia, turkey, and lean ground beef are all prime examples of what lean proteins are. Secondly, we should focus on our carbohydrate intake. Carbs are actually not the devil, and in most cases are actually beneficial in aiding weight loss. It is when carbohydrates are paired with saturated fats, trans fats, and sugars that they start to lose health...
I should receive a passing grade in this class because I can write now. Not just an exaggeration, but after another semester of English I finally feel confident that can write. Three of the reasons behind my confidence is I learned, I experienced and best of all I repeated. These three values helped prepare me for what is in store in English 1302 and here is why.
