Being healthy in body and mind is the core of personal wellness. Getting to that point though is a process and it takes deliberate actions to make it happen. It requires choosing which behaviors will help and which ones won't. It requires making decisions every day that helps take a person to a better state of body and mind health. How do you get to a state of personal wellness? Define what personal wellness means to you and define your goals. Answer this question: what changes do you want to make in your life to be healthier and to reach a better state of wellness? When you answer that question, you have defined your goals. Let's say that you are overweight, have uncontrolled Type 2 diabetes, and are under a great deal of stress at work. The changes you want to make are losing weight, getting your diabetes under control, and lowering your stress levels. All of those …show more content…
changes will make a great deal of difference in both your mental and physical state. Identify what steps you can take to meet your personal wellness goals.
You have defined what you want to happen in the first step. Now, you need to decide how you are going to achieve those wellness goals. Losing weight is one of the example goals. To achieve that goal, you may need to adopt a different eating strategy. If diabetes is in the picture, you are going to have to plan your meals with limited carbohydrates. You may decide to eat five or six smaller meals throughout the day instead of three large ones. This helps keep hunger at bay and can help steady your blood glucose levels. Exercise is another way to lose weight. Taking a 30-minute walk four or five days a week can help. Exercise also helps regulate blood glucose levels and reduce stress. Learning relaxation methods, such as yoga or tai chi, also reduces stress. And that helps people regulate their eating habits better. So, the steps to take. Eat a limited carbohydrate, healthy diet. Eat several smaller meals throughout the day. Take a 30-minute walk five times a week. Go to yoga class twice a week. Determine your
motivation. Why do you want to get to a better level of wellness? It may be that you are tired of being overweight and totally stressed out. It may be that you want to get active with your kids or grandkids. It may be that you saw a family member suffering with weight or stress problems and don't want that to repeat in your own life. Motivation is what will help you get through the difficult times. It is what will get you across the finish line. Find the obstacles. Almost everyone will face obstacles when making changes in their life to improve wellness levels. Knowing what potential obstacles are in your future path will help you work past them. Look back in your life and see what sorts of obstacles have popped up. Those same obstacles are likely to show up on your current path. For instance, you may have tried to lose weight in the past. What obstacles got in your way? It might be emotional or stress eating. It might be that you hate the idea of going to the gym every day. It might be that you give into cravings too often. Formulate strategies to help you overcome obstacles. How are you going to get past the obstacles that you know may be coming? If you plan ahead for these potential issues, you will be able to better manage or avoid them. Let's say you are an emotional eater. There are a number of ways to handle this. Keep healthy snacks readily available. So, instead of grabbing the bag of chips, you grab an apple or a low-fat cheese stick. Another strategy might be drinking a glass of water before you indulge in the stress snack. Water helps fill you up and you may find that you no longer need that snack after you drink the entire glass. Meeting your personal wellness goals will take time. But, it is time that is well spent. In the end, you will be in better health, be in a better mental state, and have more energy than you ever had before. Besides changing your diet, you should talk to your doctor about an exercise program that's right for you. If you smoke, quit. If you're overweight, try to lose weight (changing your diet and exercising will help you lose weight). Talk with your doctor about reducing other risk factors, such as high blood pressure or diabetes. – Dr. Donnely; Cody Family Practice Center
Wellness is imperative to a healthy life. Sometimes, people do not really consider what makes up wellness, they simply think of it as being “well”. Wellness may be a state of being “well”, however, it incorporates different areas such as nutrition, health, safety, nurturing, and emotional stability. People must be healthy in all of these areas in order to achieve wellness. This is not an easy task for an adult, but definitely not for children.
The second dimension of wellness is emotional wellness, which has a lot to do with you ability to recognize your own thoughts and feelings and deal with them in a healthy way. There are a lot of ways to do this, such as: understanding and sharing your thoughts and feelings with yourself and those around you, and being confident in your self and the decisions you make. Some well known people who I believe have attained emotional wellness include Ellen DeGeneres and Doctor Phil.
When thinking of my overall health, a few aspects stand out that I think I could definitely improve on. When I think my current personal wellness I think it is fairly decent. There are definitely people out there far worse than myself. It could be better because there is always room for improvement. I’m a big fan of personal growth. To me if a person decides to stop growing or wanting to better themselves either mentally, physically or emotiontally. Then whats the real purpose for living? I am a fairly active person. I love to hike, stay fit and eat healthy. Living a healthy lifestyle isn’t hard for me which I think definitely contributes to a wellness.
What makes a person healthy? Surely, it is more than exercising and a proper diet. As a ten year-old girl, being healthy had one meaning to me; to eat all my vegetables and to be physically fit. I have chosen healthcare as a career because health does not only focus on the physical aspects of wellness, but it applies to all areas of wellness, such as, intellectual, social, spiritual, financial, occupational, environmental and emotional wellness.
healthy is a major component in ones’ overall wellbeing, more so mentally, but being healthy
If one wants to live an enjoyable, fulfilling life they must know what it truly means to be well. Living a wellness lifestyle means incorporating all aspects of what it takes to flourish as a human being. It goes beyond the health of the physical body and incorporates the important social, emotional, and spiritual factors that play a part in every person’s life in one way or another. Knowing how to act correctly, control our feelings, channel our frustrations, and improve in each dimension of wellness will lead to a satisfactory life. Spiritual, physical, emotional, nutritional, and social wellness define the biggest components of life and thriving in them is vital.
In addition to holding back on some of your favorite foods you should also make sure that you do physical activity. To burn the extra calories, you need to be physically active at least thirty minutes each day. You can take a trail walk or a run around your neighborhood. It doesn’t matter what you do even if you decide to take a run through the mall. There are so many benefits from physical activity. It doesn’t only help with weight management but it also reduces the risks of high blood pressure and colon cancer. While increasing HDL cholesterol, preventing coronary heart disease and diabetes, physical activity also provides healthy and strong bones. If you want to lose the weight, you should put physical activity on your lists schedules.
Wellness is defined as “an active life-long process of becoming aware of and making choices to achieve optimal health and a more successful and balanced existence” (Ren et al., 2007). Wellness incorporates the spiritual, emotional and social wellbeing of an individual. When it came to thinking, planning and developing my SMART goal I decided to focus on my physical health as this was an area that I needed to improve the most and would also contribute positively to my spiritual, emotional, social, intellectual and environmental wellbeing aswell. In this reflective essay I will discuss and reflect on this journey. This reflection will include why I decided to focus on this specific SMART goal aswell as how I found the SMART goal journey. I will then discuss my own view on my attitudes for health and wellness and will discuss what a SMART goal is and the importance of them in order to start working towards those goals and to positively change behaviours and habits. This reflection will also include challenges that may be experienced in relation to behaviour change. These may include time management and motivation.
Health is described as physical and mental well-being and freedom from disease, pain or defect. However, such descriptions only superficially define the actual meaning of health. There may be many occasions when individuals are not necessarily ill or in pain but may be overweight, stressed or emotionally unstable. Health is a quality of life involving dynamic interaction and interdependence among the individual’s physical state, their mental and emotional reactions, and the social context in which the individual exists. There are many factors that influence your health, but three major components contribute to general well-being: Self-awareness, a balanced diet and, regular physical activity.
Most definitely, as a PTA, I will have an impact on the psychosocial health of my patients. This will manifest in a variety of ways. From the general education I will provide to my patients to the legal obligation I, as healthcare worker, have to report suspected child abuse and everything in between, I will, without a doubt, affect my patient’s psychosocial health. As therapists, everything we do can either impact our patients negatively or positively. It is my goal to only affect my patients in positive ways.
Stress is a major cause of heart disease and my stressors have increased. I know I must do something to offset the effects of it our I will end up like many of my ancestors— dead by the age of 60. Once I incorporate these two changes in my life I expect my stress levels to lower and the effects will be more than simply weight loss and physical condition.
According to the text, wellness is defined as an "integrated and dynamic level of functioning oriented toward maximizing potential, dependent on self-responsibility." It involves both preventive health behaviors and a shift in thinking and attitude. Wellness is a lifelong promise to oneself of growth and achievement in each of the seven dimensions: emotional, spiritual, physical, occupational, intellectual, environmental, and social. It means a lifetime of ongoing change and always striving toward higher levels healthy and successful living. This means, ultimately, that one must live a life that caters to each of those dimensions both individually and collectively. Not living a healthy lifestyle, can have damaging effects on both health and life, and not only yours but the people that are around you. An unhealthy lifestyle means more illness and more expenses to treat those illnesses. This means a bigger burden on an already challenged and over-budgeted healthcare system. Poor health also means more time lost at work, less quality recreational time, and shorter lifespans. Not to mention, the onset of major chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer.
Wellness can be defined in many different ways. One of my favorite definitions is from the National Wellness Institute that states that wellness is “an active process through which people become aware of, and make choices toward, a more successful existence” (NWI). I like this definition because it encompasses more aspects of wellness than just the physical aspect that people generally think of first. The other important aspects of wellness are stated by the University of California, Riverside. They include seven aspect of wellness: social, emotional, spiritual, environmental, occupational, intellectual, and physical (UCR). All of these are important to being a well-rounded and over all healthy person.
Exercising on a daily basis can help you loose excess weight and also maintain your current body type. Simple tasks, such as walking
