I had the opportunity to shadow a personal trainer named Josh Henderson. He is a personal trainer on the side, while working for a healthcare company for his main job. Some background information about Josh is he is from South Carolina and loves to lift heavy things. Every 3 months Josh competes in a regional or national powerlifting competition. Recently he got 2nd place at the 2016 Empire classic for strongmen in the heavyweight class. He not only makes goals for his clients, but trains with his clients for goals for himself. His goal now is to get his bodyweight below 220 pounds by August 20th to qualify for a Beach Classic in Seattle(I forgot exactly what the name of the tournament was). Josh is very passionate about personal training. …show more content…
I arrived at Brentwood Elementary schools soccer field about 30 minutes before the training session was supposed to start. Josh was already there, setting up every exercise the way he envisioned it. At first it looked like a circuit training session, but after further inspection it was a way to see the clients fitness level. It started with a sprint from the goal post to the 19 yard box. Then it moved to running through a series of tires. Before starting the training, he said he wanted to take a picture of the client as well as measuring body composition(Body fat and muscle mass).
I then asked a series of questions. For example, I asked how long he had been a personal trainer? He responded for about 4 years. He also said at first, he was just a trainer without a certification for people he knew for two years, then he decided to get his certificate and became certified. What had gotten him interested in personal training was his passion for weight lifting and perfection. He loves to see proper form at the gym from everyone, and doesn’t like to see anyone …show more content…
fail. Josh is unsure of where he wants to go in life, but wants to own his own fitness gym where he would be the gym’s personal trainer. Personal training will help him achieve this goal because he will have that personal touch with every client making it easier for them to work with him there. Josh loves to see clients making progress, where he hates people that give up that he knows can get the work done. The client we were working with was an individual wanting to lose 20 pounds of body fat. I asked him what sort of time frame he is looking at for this goal. But, he responded with we have to see how the client does on her first couple of visits before we make a set timeline. Josh even let me measure some initial values, like waist size, arm size, and things like that. The relationship between the client and trainer was very firm.
After the workout, I asked Josh how long he knew the client, he said this was the second time they had met. When I asked how he knew her so well, he said he didn’t. I was puzzled, he said he found something they had in common and went with it. To me, this interaction looked like it had been in the making for at least two years. The workout seemed to me that it worked for the client because as an initial or baseline score, the client was able to complete it and not be “tortured” to much. Josh used the word torture as being the absolute limit of work the client could
do. This experience really opened my eyes to how important personal trainers are to clients health. Personal trainers want the best for their clients. As Josh put it, “money is not a concern to him, I am more concerned with achieving the clients goals.” I asked him what this meant, and he responded with “I don’t do this for the money, money comes and goes, but seeing that smile on that clients face after the success they achieve is most important to me.” I loved every moment of the training, the client never gave up, Josh pushed the client again and again to see how far he could push the client to finish, and the client never gave up. The only surprise I noticed was that the client wanted more out of the initial workout, Josh promised her “torture” for the next workout. I could honestly say I would love to become a personal trainer after seeing that experience. The way he conducted himself with the client was astonishing. Hoping to become a physical therapist, I would love to match the character and intensity of Josh, in my future. This experience really opened my eyes on how to be the best trainer possible. From finding something in common to discuss, all the way to pushing limits for the client. This experience was very beneficial. Josh invited me to talk part in his clients visits whenever I had free time.
For this project, the certified athletic trainer who I have shadowed for almost eight hours in just one day is Candace O'Bryan, currently the athletic trainer at Archbishop Hoban High School in Akron. Candace has worked at Hoban now entering her third year at the high school. She works alone as a trainer there but works along side one team doctor who is at every game, and the other one being a neurosurgeon but is just a parent helping out.
Isn’t everyone’s goal in life to be able to achieve something amazing? Better yet what about setting great goals as an individual? Wouldn’t you like to better yourself as a person? As Arnold Schwarzenegger once said “you can’t climb the ladder of success with your hands in your pockets”, this simply meaning that a person must be “hungry” and have a great drive to be able to achieve greatness. The feeling of greatness and satisfaction that a person will get from being a healthy, fit individual is unexplainable. Being satisfied with your own body is a very important factor to life itself. People that are healthy are known to live healthy lifestyles as well as to be great in age. There is no negative sides to being healthy, people that are healthy are happy. I plan to take an individual and better them by training them and making them a healthier person. The steps I will go through in order to make this happen are steps such as training the person, making a nutritional plan for them, and being there to support them along the journey. I will be training the person using some fundamentals that have worked for majority of world-class athletes. I plan to use simple bodybuilding tactics as my muscle builder, such as old school techniques that Arnold Schwarzenegger used in the golden ages of the sport itself. As my research has shown, my client and I are both pleased with the “golden era” physiques and we plan to make a healthy/fit body molded like the bodies of that “era”. In this project my client and I have decided to base the “nutritional plan” as a high protein/Low carb diet, which I will release in this paper. Through out this project, it should be well know that this is not an easy sport! And the discipline to stick with it is extre...
She decided to come to the gym and run on the treadmill. My first question was why did you choose to come to the gym at this time? She said I wanted to avoid the normal crowed that comes from 2-5. Also this is the only time I could come during the day that fits in with my schedule. The second question I asked was about the personal space why did you choose not to run directly next to someone and do you choose a machine based on personal space? Her response was “ Yes I do choose a machine based on personal space. I don’t like the feeling of someone watching over my machine and silently judging how fast or slow I am going.
To satisfy my curiosity and gain a broad understanding of athletic training, I chose to interview my boss, Pete Stevens. Pete is employed by Physiotherapy Associates, a nationwide corporation that specializes in physical/occupational therapy, athletic training, and fitness/sports training. He has worked there for three years. He is currently the Head Athletic Trainer for The Arizona Rattlers. Pete received his undergraduate degree in Athletic Training at Boise State University in Idaho, followed by a graduate degree in Recreation from Arizona State University. He is currently considering additional education to become a Physician’s Assistant.
Netball uses a combination of each energy systems. It is a fast paced game, with lots of stop-starting, abrupt direction changes, and short, sharp movements. For this reason, netball uses the alactacid, ATP/PC system. This caters for one explosive muscular contraction using ATP lasting 1-2 seconds, and then 10-12 seconds of creatine phosphate (CP) after that. This might be for the centre pass, or any short movements. The Lactic acid system would then take over for 10-60 seconds of high intensity movement, which could be for running or dodging down the court. The body would now progress from the anaerobic system to the aerobic, to meet the demands of the activity. This will last for one hour of work, and is the dominant system used through the 15 minute, interval quarters. As the aerobic system is the predominant energy system used in netball games, the training program is targeted to improve and work this area, for maximal performance.
To the average person, when they think of a personal trainer they think of tough, muscular, and very strict people. That is not always the case with personal trainers. Many people get this stereotypes about personal fitness trainers from watching movies or television shows that show a morbidly obese man or woman in their late forties trying to get their life together and leave their past life of junk food, constant eating, and a sloppy unorganized life. Entertainment like this has given personal trainers a bad image and most people don’t see that personal trainer can be very helpful and want what's best for anyone's health. The public should not be not be afraid to speak or seek help from personal trainer because of the the stereotypes and

“After 5 months of training I expect to be moderately stronger and more efficient in all areas of activity as well as see a reduction in body fat and an increase in lean body mass.”
Being an athletic trainer has always been one of the jobs I have wanted to do. This has been a big achievement for me because I have always wanted to see what it was like to be in the shoes of a personal trainer. It was such a great experience because I love to help others and make people feel great about themselves. In this selfie my supervisor Ashley Kate is pictured to the right while I am pictured to the left and we are outside helping others get fit in boot camp fitness training. The emotion I am expressing is an excited reaction because I wonder how things are going to work out as I internship. I think people that would like this post are others interested in personal

Ever since I started working out sophomore year I have seen an incredible increase in muscle mass and power intensity. Because of VPE I now work out almost everyday and keep myself physically fit. Proof of this is shown in my fitness scores where as a freshman I started out doing nearly 50 crunches and 10 pullups and I'm now doing consistently 100 crunches and 20 plus pull ups. I have taken a liking to lifting and the gym rat lifestyle. I now consistently take protein supplements and not only does it help with post workout soreness but also improves energy throughout the day. Lately and more recently than ever lifting has become a significant part of my life, my family and I have invested in a bench set curling bar pull up bar and other various lifting equipment, not to mention all the jugs of protein.

I asked Luis multiple questions including why he went into fitness, what type of foods do people have to eat, what vitamins and supplements do you have to take, what motivates him to stay healthy, etc. I was intrigued with the answers he gave me. “I was always a scrawny boy in highschool. I was constantly being picked on and my health wasn’t the greatest. I wanted to make a change in my life so I did” (Sandoval). He explained how in the beginning it was difficult. He had no clue what he was doing and had no clue where to start first. Luis told me he actually wanted to give up at one point because he felt so lost and confused. He said he had to motivate himself. He wanted to be healthy and fit and he didn’t want anything to stop him. He started doing his research on the type of foods you have to eat daily and what workouts he needed to do. He also started asking advice from other people to gain more knowledge. Now he said he’s in better shape than he has ever been in. He feels confident and healthy with his new lifestyle and he told me he wouldn't have it any other way. Luis gave me the motivation and encouragement I needed to continue on the right
Physical training is 90% mental and 10% physical. The most important factor is developing a proper mindset. Your frame of mind guides everything that you do. The right mindset will get you through any challenge. Get your mind right and your body will follow. From this point forward, view physical training as an all or nothing situation. You are either in or out. There is no grey area. The words “I can’t” can no longer be part of your vocabulary. Do not give yourself permission to miss a meal or a training session. Do not make or accept excuses for not following through. There are no excuses. Trust this system. Trust yourself. Follow the programs. Failure is not an option.
To be able to understand that some people like going to the gym, some don’t, some people like to run and others not so much. As a profession in training, need to understand other peoples needs and desires when it comes to any physical activity. For one I use to have a trainer before in which I would always be asked on what I want to work on and what are the things I don’t do as much. This can be related to our self development and how we learn to like a certain activity even if before we never used to like it. It is important to understand the customers circumstances as well as their drive to work towards an attribute or a goal of theirs. Our physical activity preferences can relate to our past experience, maybe people got injured and don’t like doing a certain workout again. There is also the idea in which the activity isn’t for them in all honesty, it just comes down to preference and our likes and dislikes. That is why it is huge for us to understand other’s perspectives on physical
