Writing is a difficult and complex process which requires dedication to master. Even with all the time in the world, no final draft is going to be perfect and there are going to be a lot of bumps and bruises on the path towards your perfect essay. One must prepare to sit in complete isolation and a room with dead silence so frightening that you can hear your own thoughts. My time throughout Composition I has been an experience in which I finally put together all the aspects of writing such as integrating quotes, using present tense, expanding my vocabulary, and pinning down my grammatical errors. The grade that I deserve is an A because I have taken small steps to improve my writing and it has shown in my grade.
At the beginning of the course,
I was told to not worry about my grade but to instead focus on becoming a better writer. This was a difficult task, but throughout the semester I have made progress and still have not reached my full potential. On my first essay, I did a great job on having a strong central argument and using citations properly. I received an 88%, but was not content with the idea of having inadequate organization, irrelevant evidence, and poor editing mechanics. So, on the next essay I worked on improving my organization, evidence, and editing abilities and my grade improved as well. Not only did I improve on those aspects, but my grammatical errors and my use of vocabulary also expanded to entice the reader to want more. My essay went from an 88% to a 92% because I focused on the small details to enhance my writing. Even though I am unsure of what I am going to receive on my research essay, I am confident that I have added to my abilities as a writer and my grade will be even better than my persuasive essay. Although my persuasive essay had a strong argument, organization, and evidence, I believe that I improved on all those aspect in the final research essay. Improvement can be measured in multiple ways, but for me the only way that I judge improvement is through my grade which is an A. I began this course on the right track, but needed help to improve my writing so I seeked guidance from the writing lab. I spent multiple hours per day sitting in my room with a blank sheet of paper on Microsoft word glaring at me. I noticed my rough drafts were not very good, but when I would walk into peer reviews I would look through my friends essay for some inspiration along with helping them identify their strong points and spots that needed improvement. One of the most important things I learned in this course is if you are a great persuader you do not need ten pages to do it, it can be done in a few. This is my way to an A.
Throughout this semester we have had to write many types of essays. Although this is a college English class there is still room for improvement. I made much improvement during the semester of the class. I was able to identify my weaknesses. I learned how to make improvements to the areas I was having problems in. Although each essay we did was different I was able to begin with one essay and throughout the semester turn it into two other essays. I was able to change my style of writing to fit the type of audience I was working with. I will continue to work on my writing and keep improving it.
This is one of the best essays I ever wrote. It was also the easiest and quickest to write because I had fun doing it. It was amazing how much my writing improved when I decided to have fun with it. "Forced" writing never turns out well no matter how skilled the writer is.
Throughout the semester i only learned few new things but i did improve and solidify my skill of writing. Before my first year of college my skills have always undermined by other high school english teachers and with that came disappointing grades. I am writing this paper as a reflection of the semester and the progress i have made as a writer. I now understand many things that my high school teachers have done a poor job demonstrating and i am grateful that i decided to take my own route in my education instead of their syllabus. I entered the semester with anxiety that i would perform as i did before but i clearly outdid my own expectations by receiving top grades on my essays.
In order to help me with my grammar this time I decided to go to the Writing Center. The Writing Center was extremely helpful, they gave me tips and really helped revised my essay. I went to the writing center twice to get the most grammar check possible. However, I did do some changes in my essay after going so I believe that grammar errors might still be present. Next time I know that their services are great and I have to set up an appointment as soon as I can. When it comes to this essay I would give myself a C- cause I feel as if my essay might not had fulfilled full on the request on the prompt. The book was a bit difficult to explain even after I read and re-read the book at least twice. On my last essay I received a D, which I have to say threw me off. Throughout, much of my high school years as long as we had the point across the grammar was not very focused on which now I know it needs way more importance. In the feedback I was told that my essay as a matter a fact did accomplish the prompts request. Despite that, it had too many grammatical errors which caused my essay to get a bad
Personal narratives allow you to share your life with others and vicariously experience the things that happen around you. Your job as a writer is to put the reader in the midst of the action letting him or her live through an experience. Although a great deal of writing has a thesis, stories are different. A good story creates a dramatic effect, makes us laugh, gives us pleasurable fright, and/or gets us on the edge of our seats. A story has done its job if we can say, "Yes, that captures what living with my father feels like," or "Yes, that’s what being cut from the football team felt like."
So far this year, I felt pretty satisfied with my progress this semester. I feel like I am slowly adapting to the new way papers and assignments are handled. All my college work depends solely on me now. No one is going to baby me anymore and whether I succeed or fail depends on how much effort I put into something. For the first time in my life I wrote a paper. Not just a five paragraph essay but actual pages, which is extremely challenging. It’s also been my first time studying for five hours straight so I can pass an actual test. I didn’t know I possessed this level of dedication, it’s probably because it isn’t free.
A narrative is a story. In writing a narrative essay, you share with the reader some personal experience of your own in order to make a point or convey a message. You may choose to tell how your grandfather influenced your desire to become an orthodontist, or perhaps you’ll relate the story of the time you didn’t make the cut for the basketball team. Whatever story you tell, your purpose is to share with others some experience that has taught you something or changed you somehow.
Learning to read and write is something we all have experienced. Some experiences being difficult than others. As a kid, I can remember trying to read the daily newspapers, different types of magazines, books, and addresses on mail; basically, I tried reading anything that had words on it. My favorite thing to read were the back of cereal boxes. Nothing made me more excited than sitting at my white and pink Barbie table and chair set eating cereal while eyeballing the back of a cereal box. Only being able to correctly read one or two words, it was the first time I really felt accomplished.
I believe it is important for any student who wants to do their best in a class to take a moment to evaluate their own work to determine the rate their writing is progressing and how they can continue to advance their writing. When I looked through my own work I asked myself “what have I learned this semester?” and “what do I still need to learn in order to improve my writing?”. Answering both these questions will help me with my last step of my self-evaluation, developing a plan to learn new skills.
The feedback that I was provided by Cayla helped me tremendously because previously I lacked confidence in my writing because I had no clue if anyone else shared the same view as I. She expressed that she has similar views and told me to further extend my ideas. Admittedly I was afraid of being judged for having this sort of view but she helped me realize that I am not alone in believing this, and most importantly to not limit my writing based off of my fear of being judged by my peers. If I were to grade this assignment, I would give myself a middle B because I feel that I improved tremendously in terms of concreting my values across to the reader. By writing this paper, I seriously feel like i'm more knowledgeable about some of my values
Every great writer had to start somewhere, and they all started out with some weaknesses. While these writers grew, so did their strengths and their weaknesses. Throughout this short eight-week course, I went through a whole lot at a fast pace. I felted that I did a good job keeping up with the class, and staying on top of my work. Also while going through this class I learned that I had a few strengths and some weaknesses. I learned that I had strengths of imagination and clarity, with those I also have a weakness with my time management.
This class has been significantly more difficult than any other English class I have taken all throughout high school. This semester, I have been introduced to different styles of writing that I have never been exposed to before. This class has been stressful, but also fun. With using all of the resources I have been given throughout the semester, I have been able to do my best to further my writing abilities and hopefully only continue to grow them as I finish my later years in college. Throughout this essay, I will discuss my failures, my successes, my overall performance in the class, and my skill development skills.
I am not the kind of person who talks or writes much. Putting my thoughts on papers is something I have always struggled with doing. I believe this class will help me improve on transferring my thoughts to paper, in an organized fashion. I look forward to becoming a better writer because of this class.
Over the course of the semester, I feel that I have grown as a writer in many ways. When I came into the class, there were skills I had that I already excelled at. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class, I didn’t even realise what I was good at. This is the first class where I felt I received feedback on my writing that helped me to actually review my work to see what areas I lacked in and where I succeeded.
From the feedback I got from my peer reviewer, my paper was in the right path. What was missing was structure. As the structure went, I did not have structure it was one long paragraph that did not have a start and an end. So, I added more content to the paragraphs because they needed more sentences to back them up. What I also did was I broke down the paper into introduction, body paragraphs and the conclusion. I also got the chance to reread my paper and correct any miss interpretation and mistakes I had. I also was able to fill in the gaps of what main points were missing. I was able to add on more context from the book. I see strength into the structure in essay as it flows better. I see transformation which for me is good, I used some advice from the book. As this semester progresses I will like to continue working on essays and vocabulary, I think vocabulary says a lot about someone especially in a reading. The knowledge you have shown in the way you try to communicate with the reader. I think the grade I earned in this essay is a B+ because I answer all the questions to my ability that were given
