In a time of 140 characters, instant messages, and emails possessing good business writing skills are still important. When email or other written communication is sent, it is out there for people to judge. Correspondences not only reflect on the writer, but on their organization as well, so it’s essential to get it right. For my development goal, I decided to improve my written communication skills by completing several courses through our Judicial Online University (JOU). The eleven courses I took were very informative and complex, so I have divided this report into two sections: grammar skills and the writing process.
GRAMMAR SKILLS
Grammar is extremely important because it is the foundation of communication. The better the grammar,

The course, “Punctuation” teaches how to use punctuation marks to break sentences for flow and to bring clarity to the writer’s message. There are many punctuation symbols, but the most common marks are periods, commas, semicolons, colons, question marks, and apostrophes. The course covers the specific rules of punctuation usage and how these symbols express the emotion of the writer by substituting for voice intonation, tone, volume, and pauses used when …show more content…
This lesson teaches that practice makes perfect and to use tools and guidelines when writing messages, essays, reports, emails, or correspondences. Also, the course states that people with good writing skills are generally seen as more credible and educated. Written material should be clear and concise, formatted to fit the targeted audience, direct, and the words familiar to the receiver. Once the correspondence is written, proofreading is a MUST. The course, “Editing and Proofreading” points out that many professionals fail to realize how editing and proofreading a document is critical to the writing process. Spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, and carelessness reflect not only on you and your work but your organization as well. Making the effort to edit and proofread your writing helps ensure you communicate as effectively and clearly as possible, prevents you from making costly, embarrassing errors that require documents to be redistributed or reprinted, makes sure your writing conveys a professional image, and helps you detect errors that spell-checking or grammar-checking software fails to find and
Sam Dillion wrote “What Corporate America Can’t Build: A Sentence” for an audience of college students, employees and corporate people. In his article, Sam points out that companies are spending a lot of money annually on remedial training. According to Sam, the writing problem appears in e-mails, reports and texts. He is informing his audience to brush up on writing skills before entering the corporate world, in order to avoid remedial training. Companies like to hire employees with excellent writing skills but many of employees and applicants fall short of that standard.
In the article by Kyle Wein “I Won’t Hire People Who Use Poor Grammar. Here’s Why.” explains reasons as to why the owner of a business only hires educated, employees. If someone cannot tell the difference between simple words such as there, their, and they’re, the manager will not hire that applicant. That’s not the only thing Wein looks for in an employee. He is looking for smart, educated, employees who use good grammar. “Yes, language is constantly changing, but that doesn’t make grammar unimportant. Good grammar is credibility, especially on the internet.” Grammar is important no matter what the job is. According to the author, without good use of grammar you will not have a job. Without a job you will have no money, no satisfaction, and/or
Ferris, discusses how reading aloud when proof reading helps the writer see if they have chosen the most effect, correct, or precise word. In addition, the writer can achieve the right level of formality for the writing and catch minor mistakes that can be easily over looked such as repeating of a key word and phrases (99). By using the most effective language, the writer will better communicate his or her message to the reader. By proof reading, the writer will be able to employ a better use of language and avoid mistakes such as wordiness. Furthermore, an improved use of language will build the writers sense of confidence in writing or any genre of presenting an
The art of writing is a complex and difficult process. Proper writing requires careful planning, revision, and proofreading. Throughout the past semester, the quality of my writing has evolved significantly. At first, I struggled with the separation of different types of paragraphs, and I found writing them laborious. Constant practice, however, has eliminated many of my original difficulties, and helped to inspire confidence in my skills.
Good Grammar in the work place is very important. Without good grammar the work place wouldn’t be as repeatable as they want to be. Grammar is important in the work place because the employees need to sound as educated and intelligent as they can. Kyle Weins states that having good grammar shows intelligence. Having good grammar, according to Kyle Weins, shows that people can be organized in grammar and in tasks unrelated to grammar. Because of the internet, the grammar rules are changing. Correct grammar in the work place is important because if you work in a job that is like Kyle Weins’s company; the employees need to have good grammar because detail is very important to his company (Weins). Proper grammar in the work place shows that the employees are intelligent and recommends respect. Adam states that if you look for correct grammar while listening to other people; it shows that you are listening to the person and are thinking about what you are going to say. Correct grammar in the work place is very important, because it shows intelligence in the employee and will benefit the whole company (Adams).
There are many reasons why good grammar is important at work. First of all, if an applicant has bad grammar, then he or she may not even get hired in the first place. Kyle Weins, CEO of ifixit, said in his “Harvard Business Review article” that he won’t even hire applicants who have bad grammar; his company has an English test that all applicants must take. Many other companies also have English tests in the hiring process. He also said that good grammar skills show how serious someone is about they’re work; someone with lazy grammar looks like a lazy worker. Plus, good grammar makes people look smarter; someone with a wide vocabulary and great grammar would do a better job impressing a client (Weins ). In her Frobes article, Susan Adams listed the reasons why she thinks good grammar at work is important. She says that good grammar show that an employee knows when to use context appropriate language. It also shows respect to the person they’re talking to and finally it shows that they’re organized people. Employers value an organized employee because they more dependable (Adams).
As the first semester of my sophomore year wraps up, I begin to realize that I have learned a lot in all of my classes. The class that I learned the most from has definitely been my English 111 course. This class have given me so many opportunities to improve my writing skills. With all of the success I’ve had in this class, I believe I will do just fine with writing later in my life.
However, this has greatly hindered our writing in the professional standpoint. With the ability to write simple phrases with poor grammar and quick, abbreviated words, casual writing established itself as another problem for individuals. In some instances, texting has been constantly used incorrectly where one friend told Truus that he “CANT BELIEVE U PUT APOSTROPHE IN HAIRDRESSERS”(Truss 496). During the text, he emphasized on the apostrophe in hairdressers. Although using an apostrophe is unnecessary, it is certainly important in a professional career. Even throughout the text, he did not write out you, but instead wrote it as an “U”. As a result, this short message can carry over to his writing and may appear in future resume and cover letter from habit. Even with the constant reminders to write correctly, individuals continue to write in short messages as they have grown slothful to write longer text. Even then, these habits carry over to their work and as depicted in Wiens’s company, individuals “can’t distinguish between “to” and “too” (Wiens 500). Due to an overuse of writing short texts, employers cannot distinguish simple phrases that would be otherwise taught in an elementary school class. In order to write professionally, it is important to constantly remind ourselves to write grammatically correct during any leisure activities. From there,
Writing and reading are two essential skills that we need to have in order to succeed in any field of study that we have chosen. Without these two we would not be here, wouldn’t be writing right now and would be considered the lowest class of our society. There are different aspects of writing that each of us may, or may not, excel at. Some of us are creative enough to write short stories or even novels on fiction while others, like me, are better at writing essays. To accomplish this we have all had a person to inspire us, to drive us, to get us over the hump of confidence that we need to succeed. Still to be successful we need to count on ourselves to succeed.
Every person has their own unique way of writing which makes their writing stand out among the other people’s writing. Weather a person’s writing is full of high leveled vocabulary to a person use of complex sentences. Throughout the semester I had many times where I felt that my writing was weak at certain points or at times where my writing skills to started to improve. The major assignments and the short answer responses helped improve my skills as a writer. Even though all three major assignments helped improved my writing skills, the one that had the most effect in my writing was the report essay as it helped discover new methods while also the short answer response number 4 helped me to analysis images in an aspect that I did not know before.
As the discussion of good writing evolved in class, I began to wonder what made good business writing. I thought about the purpose in writing both within a particular company and between different companies and organizations. I decided that most writing in business is meant to be either informative, persuasive, or a combination of both. Whether informative or persuasive in nature, I have decided that most good business writing is very similar to other good writing. I have chosen to focus on three elements that contribute to good usage in business. They are:
Writing is an important part of everyone’s life, whether we use it in school, in the workplace, as a hobby or in personal communication. It is important to have this skill because it helps us as writers to express feelings and thoughts to other people in a reasonably permanent form. Formal writing forms like essays, research papers, and articles stimulates critically thinking. This helps the writer to learn how to interpret the world around him/her in a meaningful way. In college, professors motivate students to write in a formal, coherent manner, without losing their own voice in the process. Improving your writing skills is important, in every English class that’s the main teaching point; to help students improve their writing skills. Throughout my college experience I have acknowledge that
Recently, regardless of how good technologies are nowadays, how modern the universe can be using the creativeness and intelligence of human’s mind, we must always not forget to communicate with one another every day. Communication is define as the act of transferring information from one place to another. It may be in a form of vocally, written, visually or non-verbally (skillsyouneed.com, 2017). As for me, the ability to communicate effectively is the most importance of all life skills. This is what I have been struggling in my daily routine life as an international student here in Dublin, Ireland. Back in Malaysia, my first language is Malay, but when I came here for the first time, I found it quite difficult as English is not
During the course of this semester; the variety of writing styles and essays assigned to me in my communication skills class encouraged the development of my writing skills, as well as provided me with more self-assurance in my abilities. My writing, research, and presentation abilities enhanced through practice, determination, and the understanding I gained during this course. With every single writing assignment, I learned new innovative approaches and skills, which enhanced my abilities to improve my thoughts logically, enabling me to write more clearly, and to organize my papers more effectively. At the beginning of this semester; despite the fact that I already knew the terminology MAP: message, audience, purpose; I never really understood the significance of MAP. For this reason, my writing lacked clarity, organization, and my writings appeared less focused on the topics. As a result my research papers and essays did not flow as smoothly from one passage to the next. Furthermore, I was unaccustomed with the precise procedures used when writing an essay. For instance, my previous classes before college, although requiring a reference page, did not require me to include proper citations in my writings. After evaluating the quality of my writing toward the end of the semester, I recognized vast improvements in several areas of my writing. By concentrating on the beginning stages of my writings, I could distinguish ahead of time my audience and my message. As a result, my essays are clear, and I remain on topic. In addition to that using transition phrases efficiently also helps my writing to flow smoothly. The proper use of transitions makes my writings easy to follow from one topic to the next. I also learned that pre-writing...
