The essential aspect of the self-directed, intrinsically motivated, active learner is discipline. These types of learners can control themselves. They do not need an instructor to make the material exciting for them to learn it, and are able to persevere in spite of obstacles. They see themselves as responsible for their thoughts, attitudes and actions. They do not see themselves as victims of their circumstances, or teachers, instead they take control of their learning process, and set goals and plan how to fulfill those goals and stick to the plan. This includes being able to manage their time. Finally, the desire to learn is another important aspect of these kinds of learners.

These goals are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-sensitive. I will implement this plan by ensuring that any goals set match the SMART criteria. I will measure success by how many set goals I am able to complete. I will track this using a spreadsheet. I will hold myself accountable by telling someone my goals and asking them to check up on me.

I will implement this goal by fasting from food and drink every Monday for twelve hours for 3 months, fasting from technology for 2 hours every day for 31 days, praying for fifteen minutes every day before I begin my school work for a month, and reading a chapter of the New Testament everyday before going to sleep for 31 days. I will measure progress in a prayer journal. I will hold myself accountable by telling my pastor what I am doing and asking her to check up on me every week. The teaching assistant will work together with the teacher to plan, evaluate and deliver learning activities for the children, in accordance to the curriculum / EYFS. I would say that I am a self-motivated learner. I enjoy learning that is one of the reasons why I enjoy my work and career so much because I learn something new every day. Grades and praise are important, but they do not drive me in my learning. As we age and enter different stages of life, our personal obligations and responsibilities tend to become more time-consuming. As a wife, student, employee, and caretaker for an elderly woman, some days feel incredibly overwhelming and daunting. By applying a specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, time-bound (S.M.A.R.T.) process to my day, it becomes much more feasible. However, what about the long-term goals that will affect your future? By using the S.M.A.R.T. goal system, you are able to make your dreams a reality one small step at a time.
Self-concept of the learner- Adult learners are naturally self- directed which means they will take ownership of what and how to learn and how to manage their time and learning.
I’ve made it my passion to be a life-long learner to sharpen my skills, abilities and God-given talent. Descartes was also a life-long learner. He was the thinker and writer who coined the phrase, “I think, therefore I am” (Gluck, Mercado, & Myers, 2014, p. 7). Although Descartes existed during the time of the Renaissance, his theory that the eyes were significant to stimulating other parts of the body, such as the fingers, arms and legs was brilliant. It is now understood that this” process begins with the stimulus, a sensory event from the outside world entering” through the eyes (Gluck et al., 2014, p. 7).
Goal Setting. In my organization for goal setting we follow the SMART method. SMART stands for S-Specific, M-Measurable, A-Achievable, R-Realistic and T-Timely.
Wow! I have a personal learning style! If I had given any thought to my learning style prior to this course, I would have said simply, “Some things are easy for me to learn, and some things are not.” Now I can say, “I am a grouper, a top-down learner, an owl, in the C-D quadrants, and my strong intelligences are linguistic, intrapersonal, and interpersonal”.
