When starting into a Health Science degree program, my goal was to become a Nutritionist. While I didn’t quite know all the preparation that specific career goal entailed, I have decided to stick with it as I have learned so much already of the steps needed to be successful in my plans. I want to be a Nutritionist because I have always enjoyed cooking and baking, even to the point of considering a culinary career. However, I have also always been passionate about making healthier food choices and trying to understand how simple changes in diet can affect our overall wellbeing. Although Kaplan is not accredited through ACEND, which is required to take the board examination, I have done research on other options of accomplishing this goal. Whether I complete my degree through Kaplan and then carry on to an accredited Master’s Program in the future, or I can transfer to an accredited bachelors program once I have completed the 3 years of transferable “general education” requirements. I have been learning all I can about the effects of nutrition on my personal health (and my family) over the past 10 or so years. By trial and error, reading books, and through various internet forums and asking a lot of questions I have already learned a great deal on this subject. Changing my own diet had such a dramatic impact on my health I am convinced it would do that for more people if they could separate themselves from the status quo and the addictive nature of the ingredients in our "regular"
Keyla Negron is a first generation college student at the University of Connecticut, better known as UConn. She states that being a first generation college student was an accomplishment, but that it brought “all the challenges of trying to succeed”. She started college just like many other new students, not knowing exactly what to study or what to do after graduating. This made Keyla realize that is “one of the positive things” of college because “you have the opportunity to take different classes and discover your likes and dislikes”. In her case, it took her just about three years to discover a passion in nutrition, an area she never had imagined herself studying, although Keyla does realize that she was always “questioning how certain foods affect our body and what defined a healthy food and an unhealthy food”.

Some career goals I have in order to become a member of the health care team would include graduating high school and college and taking any additional educational courses required to become whichever health field I decide to go into. I will accomplish these goals by studying, doing all my homework, making sure I get a nutritional diet, and getting plenty of exercise to maintain a sufficient amount of energy to perform these tasks. There are multiple careers I am interested in including Registered Nurse, Pediatric Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, Military Nurse, and a Paramedic. I go back and forth between these careers all the time, but I know with the help of my friends and family I will be able to make the best decision. The three careers I chose to write about are Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, and Physical Therapist Assistant.
...urture is the concept of our environment, but more importantly it is about self-control. Unhealthy eating habits do not just materialize overnight; these behaviors are learned. This course has allowed me to put into perspective how that donut today could effect tomorrow. Being a millennial, as my generation is known, has put the youth of today at a major disadvantage. We are accustomed to having everything instantaneously. We need to educate ourselves about the dangers of our “me first, me now” detriment. This course has given me a wonderful insight as to how to not only understand the disease process, but also remedy this process before irreparable damage may occur. I’ve also been able to see that anything is possible with the right support system in place. It is very important to believe in the power of my ability to make positive and lasting changes in my life.
When I started studying health and nutrition in September 2014, my goals were, to find out the proper foods that a person should consume to lose weight and to find out what type of workouts burn the most fat. In October, 2014, I volunteered to become a fitness instructor at a Herbalife fit camp, where I helped lead out workouts for my local community. My objective was to help out the personal trainers that ran the camp wherever they needed the help at and to learn more about the proper nutrition choices that they offered to the community.
The chemistry of the human body and how it is affected by food is one of the main reasons why I became interested in nutrition. I really enjoy applying scientific knowledge to food and seeing how it can harm or benefit individuals and that is what nutrition is all about.
I am inspired to explore the field of dietetics which is very broad and dietitians perform a variety of functions in their jobs. As a dietitian, I can work in a wide variety of positions such as a foodservice manager in commercial or institutional, a community nutritionist, such as the WIC and Headstart, a consultant to major food corporations such as Kelloggs and Kraft or go into sales. I am very interested in working in a position where I can help people develop habits to improve their health. I may eventually go on to graduate school to advance my knowledge of dietetics.

This encouraged me to explore working with people who also suffer from allergies, to pursue at that time a nutrition degree which would allow me to help educate others about what foods might be causing their bodies to react negatively. However, when I started through the process of working towards a nutrition program, it was essential for me to take a chemistry series that within it required a quarter of general, organic, and biochemistry. Growing up with a metabolic syndrome and following a specific diet, made me want to explore more the scientific literacy, and try to find ways to improve my health through nutrition in conjunction with pharmaceutical treatment.
